LYRICS:
I can smell the death on the sheets
Covering me
I can't believe this is the end
But this is my deathbed
I lie here alone
If I close my eyes tonight
I know I'll be home
The year was nineteen forty one
I was eight years old and
Far far too young
To know that the stories
Of battles and glory
Was a tale a kind mother
Made up for her son
You see
Dad was a traveling preacher
Teaching the words of the Teacher
But mother had sworn
Went off to the war
And died there with honor
Somewhere on a beach there
But he left once to never return
Which taught me that I should unlearn
Whatever I thought a father should be
I abandoned that thought
Like he abandoned me
By forty seven I was fourteen
I'd acquired a taste for liquor and nicotine
I smoked until I threw up
Yet I still lit 'em up for thirty more years
Like a machine
So right there you have it
That one filthy habit
Is what got me where I am today
I can smell the death on the sheets
Covering me
I can't believe this is the end
I can hear those sad memories
Still haunting me
So many things
I'd do again
But this is my deathbed
I lie here alone
If I close my eyes tonight
I know I'll be home
I got married on my twenty first
Eight months before my wife would give birth
It's easier to be sure you love someone
When her father inquires with the barrel of a gun
The union was far from harmonious
No two people could have been more alone than us
The years would go by and she'd love someone else
And I realized I hadn't been loved yet myself
From there it's your typical spiel
Yeah if life was a highway
I was drunk at the wheel
I was helping the loose ends
All fall apart
Yeah I swear I was destined to fail
And fail from the start
I bowled about six times a week
The bottle of Beam kept the memories from me
Our marriage had taken a seven-ten split
Along with my pride the ex-wife took the kids
I can smell the death on the sheets
Covering me
I can't believe this is the end
I can hear those sad memories
Still haunting me
So many things
I'd do again
But this is my deathbed
I lie here alone
If I close my eyes tonight
I know I'll be home
I was so scared of Jesus
But He sought me out
Like the cancer in my lungs
That's killing me now
And I've given up hope
On the days I have left
But I cling to the hope
Of my life in the next
Then Jesus showed up
Said "Before we go"
"I thought that we might reminisce"
"See one night in your life"
"When you turned out the light"
"You asked for and prayed for my forgiveness"
You cried wolf
The tears they soaked your fur
The blood dripped from your fangs
You said, "What have I done?"
You loved that lamb
With every sinful bone
And there you wept alone
Your heart was so contrite
You said, "Jesus, please forgive me of my crimes
Sanctify this withered heart of mine
Stay with me until my life is through
And on that day please take me home with you"
I can smell the death on the sheets
Covering me
I can't believe this is the end
I can hear You whisper to me,
"It's time to leave
You'll never be lonely again"
But this was my deathbed
I died there alone
When I closed my eyes tonight
You carried me home
I am the Way
Follow Me
And take My hand
And I am the Truth
Embrace Me and you'll understand
And I am the Light
And for Me you'll live again
For I am Love
I am Love
I, I am Love

Don't mind me, just crying quietly over here to one of the greatest songs ever
Right there with ya
Same here😭
Same 😭😭😭
AGREED!!!!
Agree
For the last 12 years, I have heard this song at least 3000 times. And it still makes me cry every single time I hear it. Jesus is real, He is alive, and He will never leave or forsake you if call on His Holy Name. I was a lost, despicable sinner who wanted to be alone in my shame for so long. I wanted to die, but one night I broke down and prayed to Him like I had never before. My life was changed that night. Now I'm a married man with a wonderful wife, and 2 awesome children. My kids won't let me play this song with them in the car, though. They don't like daddy crying.
It’s 2023 and my 30 year old self can still sing every single word to this entire album. This WAS my childhood 🎉
Same brother
This song makes me appreciate life more and more, especially knowing that Jesus is always the same distance away and I just have to cry to him with faith before it’s too late. At the end of the day, he’s the only source of love you need. No matter what happens on this earth infested with sin and sadness, I’ll always come to Jesus just as the man in this song did.
The Best Song of Relient k
FINALLY I hear the da da das get put in the climax. I've been wanting to hear that for like 10 years.
Dude! I love your work with Mr. Sunday!
@@heyste11a ayy 👈🏽👈🏽
I'm not a Christian, but all these years later, I still love this song
One day...
This lyrics, this piano, this trumpet, this song always remind me the love of God around us, even our deathbed, thanks a lot Relient K, love u so muchhhhhhhh
Every time Jon comes in I lose it, it's like God is speaking to all of us through Jon. This song is a masterpiece.
When 2 of your most favorite bands of all time are best friends......freaking beautiful
I miss Matt and Adam Young being together
At 9:02 “Deathbed” shows up at the bottom of the set list in the video!!
Bro, this is tripping me up. It's actually changing throughout the video...
What does it mean?!?!?
This song makes me cry :') 🖤👌🏻
Hi guys! I’m from Chile and I have listened to Relient k since I was 12 years old, today I am 25. It is the only band that I have not stopped listening to and I never get tired of listening to this song.
es de las mejores bandas que existen
Relient K, lo mejor
Come Back Relient K!!!!!!!!! We miss you!!!!!!!
actually though
I love that you can hear the audience singing along.
especially the hopeful parts near the end.
the crying wolf's confession "what have I done?",
and living Lamb's reply "I am Love."
When the entire audience is singing every word of a song this wordy and complicated,
it shows just how impactful the song has been.
This song has saved lives. Plural.
This song means so much to me
Same
Matt Theissen's lyrical genius given free reign
Never made this realization over the last 16 years of this song. Such strong billy Joel vibes both musically and lyrically
I listen to this song every day
This just cleared my skin and watered my crops
Hahahaha agreed
This song is so good
How underrated is this song!?...I remember discovering this song 2yrs ago and I have listened to it literally over 500 times
One of the greatest song of all times
When I went to this concert, it was the second time I saw Deathbed performed live, but it was the first time that I got to see it when Jon Foreman was around to sing his part! Such an awesome experience!
I've always wanted to make this song into a movie or drama. One of my all time favourite songs
I saw Switchfoot and Relient k… so happy
I wish this was recorded on video as well, this is awesome
Lyrically, probably the best song I’ve ever heard
I want to know what inspired this song. It is so profound and witty. I can barely handle my feels when I hear this song. This is possibly my favorite song by them
I discovered this song when I was 11 and always turned it up when things turned out really low. Now im 18 and it still means a whole lot to me and always makes me feel a little less alone, as if i was listening to the story of the man in the song. I feel its something heavenly but everyone has their own unique experiences with this song.
the amount of times i’ve cried to this song in bed... thanks for this masterpiece
Love you guy! Relient K has always been my favorite band for as long as I can remember. Please come to St Louis some day!
PLEASE COME BACK
My favorite Relient K song! Got me using this toilet paper to dry my face omgosh
I used to play this song all the time on my rock phase as a teenager. My sister who is now 24 texted me like “what’s that one song you always used to play about the deathbed”. 🥲🥲 I never knew she was listening
I was at the Feb 4 2017 Show at Showbox Seattle, on the railing, 6' from the speakers. I also got to meet all the guys from RK. It was an early b-day present for my brother. This was my favorite part, because this is my favorite song.
#1 favorite song relient ever produced
My friends played this song at a youth group event and I came running XD Relient K music is officially the only way to summon me
This live version made me cry harder than the studio version ❤️
Dang. I've only listened to the studio recording, so hearing this live for the first time is pretty sweet. I love the Jon Foreman actually sang his part in a live show.
greatest song of all time. OF ALL TIME. Thank u so much for releasing this ❤️

This song always hits hard but hearing it in 2020 ...hits extra hard I'll just be bawling my eyes out during my lunch break if someone needs me.
Awesome song of sorrow and hope
I loved these shows!!! I hope to see you and Switchfoot together again!
After I got saved when I was 9 I didn’t have much access to anything biblical except a cd with this song on it and I listened to it over and over. 🥺 I still love it so much!
Love y’all always. 😊
And here we are again
"You cried wolf...the tears they soaked your fur, the blood dripped from your fangs, you said "what have I done!?" You loved that lamb, with every sinful bone, and there you wept alone....

I wish I could write songs as amazing as you guys! Such an inspiration!
You can write songs as well its easy
All you have to do is have a melody stuck in your head then go on from there and start writing.
@@notificationsquadshout5672 I've been attempting that, haha! XD I've got a few good melodies and lyrics in the works, a few punk, a few various other genres, but I…
A. Hate my voice XD,
B. Am a broke College Student not able to buy the right instruments and tools (guess I'm stuck with Garage Band, hahaha… oof), and
C. Lack the raw talent these crazy amazing individuals posses
Just gotta keep trying, I suppose! Thanks for the encouragement, lol!
@@dustinsteiger9154 you're welcome 😂
@@notificationsquadshout5672 I think I heard Switchfoot, Relient K and Death Cab for Cutie has an approach reversed to yours: first the lyrics, than the melody. But I guess for begginers your approach is more prolific, you just probably end up with less meaningful lyrics. All in all, have a good time with songwriting, I plan to do it too
@@dustinsteiger9154 there is software available like Musescore and Reaper or Ardour which can take time to learn but may be beneficial to you, they are also free (except Reaper).
Hey, I was actually at the show this audio was recorded at! Good job removing the crowd noises from the background, guys. I remember in the audience I could barely hear you guys over all of us singing this. I also remember recording the whole thing on my phone so I could rub in my friends' faces the fact that ya'll played this number in concert and they all missed it.
Does the BPM or time signature change during the transition between verse and chorus? I want to play this song, but I have a terrible ear and lose my flow when the chorus starts.
You guys notice the setlist change throughout the song?
Whoever is uploading these videos, could you also put Forget And Not Slow Down on Apple Music (including Terminals)??? It’s been 10 years 😫😫
This is my dad :(
And probably me .
"I want this song to be played when I'm going to die," that's my thought 15 years ago.
💥🕯🗽 🌊💓
Absolutely Beautiful
Lol rhetorical chat before the best serious song in their repertoire
I don't think I'll ever get to witness them live nobody i like ever comes to India
Ive left the faith, i couldnt reconcile the current political landscape with whats in scripture, and through more study and discussion i came to the decision i dont believe or want to adhere to the bible. Even in my state of heresy and apostasy, this song is still devastating, and my only tattoo to this day is the flower on the cover of mmhmm. Relient k is an excellent band regardless of belief, and ill sing every lyric at the top of my lungs at every show of theirs i can get to.
The year was 1941...
I was eight years old and far far too young
