Film critic Roger Ebert had a great line in his review, where he said that although the movie is very R-rated, he thought an exception should be made for any young teens who were considering trying hard drugs - they should be shown the movie, because it "plays like a travelogue of Hell." Great reaction!

I first saw this movie in freshman year of high school for video class. Our teacher originally wanted us to watch the early parts to learn about editing techniques, and this movie is remarkably well edited, but he let us watch the whole thing after school. This movie and the last 20 minutes really haunted me, but I'm honestly thankful I watched it so young. It's a really brutal, raw drama that really left an impression on me in a big way. It's a good cautionary tale about drug addiction and to see the human condition from characters who hit rock bottom. Fantastic movie.

I watched this movie for the first time when I was a freshman in high school. I was visiting my grandparents, and I stayed up late to watch the movie. Literally the minute the "ass to ass" scene started, I heard footsteps on the stairs, and I literally had to sit through that whole scene while my grandfather got a glass of water. The look he gave me, I'll never forget, rofl. It was like, "I'm not going to tell your dad, but what the fuck is wrong with you."

I'd say this movie is one of the best anti drug films ever made. Honestly, show this to kids to scare the hell out of them. But it also covers addiction in many forms. The reason why this movie hits so hard is because of how real it is. Probably everyone knows someone that's struggled with addiction or experienced it in some form yourself. I know many people say they'll never rewatch this film, but I've watched it several times and have it on Blu-ray. Aronofsky may be one of the most original filmmakers going right now. Like he challenges what film can be. His first film Pi is well worth a watch. I really love the Fountain. It's one of the most beautiful sad movies ever made. And Mother! was another original film that I loved. I find it's commentary on humanity very spot on. He doesn't make conventional films and I admire and respect that about Aronofsky. I know his films aren't for everyone but I vibe with them.

I think movies like this are important because it speaks truth to real struggles faced in every family. In fact, I think this movie is part of what drove me to work in emergency healthcare.
I liked that job, and I was really proud of my ability to work with and soothe psych patients. But it really wore me down to see so many hospital & facility staff did not give a shit.
Anyway, my main takeaway here was that compassion for the suffering of addicts is key to getting through to them. And movies like this help with that

Aronofsky knows how to work with actors maybe more than any other director I know. He just gets all time great performances out of them. Ellen Burstyn in Requiem, Brendan Fraser in The Whale, Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler and of course Natalie Portman in Black Swan. All of them oscar nominated and two of them won. I'm so excited what he does next.

What I remembered from watching this once many years ago was the music, the arm, the sex party, the monstrous refrigerator and of course the overwhelming bleakness of the ending. I knew Ellen Burstyn was generally great in it but that monologue REALLY hit in a way I don't think I noticed at the time. Maybe because I'm older - that monologue was the only part of the movie that wasn't just about the denial and addiction and the uncaring system, but about the existential dread of regrets and how one chooses what to live for. It stands out to me as much as the ending now. Phenomenal.

When this came out on DVD, I used to keep it on a loop. I don't even know how many times I've watched it.
The music is recognizable because, after the movie's success, everyone started using it in trailers and commercials. They famously re-recorded it with an orchestra and used it in the trailer for The Two Towers, I think. It was THE popular piece of scoring to put with things for a few years. Clint Mansell did a hell of a job with the score, as I think it was his first full film score after quitting his band and doing a couple of tracks for Aronofski's movie Pi.
This is based on a novel by Hubert Selby Jr., who did a lot of dark and depressing books that were also very realistic. He co-wrote the script, as well, so it kept all of that without being watered down.

I really understand people not wanting to watch this movie a second time, but I really like to watch it. I‘m having several problems, for many years now, and I feel like I‘m alone with it, because if I try to share some of it, people usually don’t seem to be able to accept it or understand it or want it. This movie though kind of gives me empathy. Also as I haven’t been able to win my fights yet, the fact that this movie neither has a ray of hope nor a happy ending, kind of gives me empathy and some peace as well weirdly enough. All these happy endings and people saying be your best and be happy make me feel really bad at times, when I look at my life and me struggling. It’s like listening to breakup songs during a breakup I guess.
