  • NASA's Perseverance rover is actively searching for Martian life to bring back home. But given out track record of keeping things in quarantine, is that really a good idea? A (sortof) single-take exploration of aliens, astrobiology, and testing how many sci-fi movies references can I make in 8 minutes.

*Star Gazers* is a short astronomy show on American public television previously hosted by Jack Foley Horkheimer, executive director of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium.
First episode date: November 6, 1976
Theme song: Star Gazers Theme Song
      Network: PBS
      No. of episodes: 2,150+
      Writers: Jack Horkheimer
      Music composed by: Claude Debussy
... The show has many catchphrases that viewers associate with Jack Horkheimer. Horkheimer's appearances on the show are always marked with his opening line, "Greetings, greetings, fellow star gazers!" and his signature closing line, "Keep looking up!"
These are the most widely recognizable quotes from the show but there were also others in common usage throughout the series.
Horkheimer used "So get thee outside..." to encourage viewers to watch the stars. When describing the heavens he would often say "Let me show you."
When introducing a picture of the night sky, he would often say, "O.K., we've got our skies set up for..." and then add a date and time. ...]

I recall an Enterprise episode where the crew come across a silicon-based virus that starts killing two of the crew members. I (a chemistry graduate) spent most of the episode trying to cut the writers as much slack as possible as to where on earth those viruses were supposed to get the silicon they needed to replicate themselves.
I would honestly love a truly oddball scifi series with stuff like this taken into account.
    Think:
    - Good newtonian physics. The Expanse and Babylon 5 show that this is viable for storytelling, and because it helps my suspension of disbelief
    - One or two alien races, each vastly unlike human forms (similar to the Revelation Space universe authored by Alastair Reynolds or Star Trek's Tholins) and none of that monoculture stuff that you see basically everywhere in scifi
    - If no aliens, then humans that have been incredibly genetically customised to their environment and are essentially different species

The challenge would be the timetable as for every new research technique a space station module needs to be designed, tested and launched, which takes ages, and of course the scientists, that would eventually need to come back, via multiple steps of isolation and monitoring.
