  • The final movement from Symphony No. 5 in F minor by Charles Marie Widor, performed on the Skinner organ of the National Cathedral by Andy Brown.
A few notes about this video. First of all, unfortunately the original video on this channel of Widor's Toccata had to be taken down, so the primary purpose of this video is to replace it. Second, before many of you start to comment on the tempo of this performance in relation to the recording of Widor himself playing this toccata, remember that Widor was playing a 5 manual tracker action organ, he was in his 80's and he was probably being passive aggressive with the tempo to make a point to American organists.
Anyway, enjoy! (And yes, I did use the Tuba, Chamade and the 64' at the end)

I played this organ only once when I was about your age. It was when the cathedral was only half built. The organist Paul Calloway found me playing the organ and invited me to leave. So much for mentoring in a young person. My how things have changed. You are lucky that you are able to play where ever you go. Back in the day, it wasnt so easy.

You are extremely talented and very correct. However you need to let yourself go. Your sound is very studied. By that, I mean almost militaristic. You really have it. Your ability is far superior to most. However you need to not just play correctly but with abandonment. Let yourself go, relax. This is not a contest to do everything by the book. You do that better than most. Your appearance is in good taste. You just need to relax more and realize that you have it. Think more about being on stage as an actor and take a chance to even take more freedom with tempo. When you practice, put on a pair of jeans and a T shirt. Run around the block, find something that makes you laugh. Listen to three or four great organists who play the same pieces . You have it. In life even the best dressed people don't get upset if their shirt gets untucked or has a wrinkle by accident. Meditate every day and use"I am really good and better than many as a mantra". Get silly at times. After a while your playing will be less studied. If you still feel frozen, talk to someone you admire and trust. You have it. You just have to learn to roll with it. My best to you. The sermon is over. You have it.go for it. B

My first memory of hearing this extraordinary music was abiout fifty years ago. My church, St. Paul's Episcopal in Riverside, CT had just replaced its organ. and this was the final piece played for the recessional at the end of the dedicatioin service by our young organist, Steve Roberts. I still get the same thrill hearing it again!

... Wow, young man.... I have some of my students who do not dream of performing the Toccata with such splendid mastery as you have been able to do. The toccata is very particular, you have to feel it in your soul, identify yourself with a Widor, who by now in his eighties performed it with "his" time. But you have a particular gift, you can make passages of a difficulty, using the keyboards to create that piano, that forte in which there is all the determination of the author, and you, a very young boy, are able to Making passages of a difficulty, using keyboards, creating that piano, that forte in which there is all the determination of the author, and you, a very young boy, are able to transmit. I won't deny that I've listened to you over and over again, and yes, I was moved by your tranquility but determination, your executive ability, with a splendid and particular tednic and a mastery even on the pedals..... Well, I wish you a future in music... And it's already there.... I always tell my boys "when you sed Sit at the console of an organ, don't let noises reach people's ears, but notes that touch the heart of those who listen to you"..... well you did... Thank you for this.. M°Enrico Maria Basaldella
Impressive, and I could pick out the 64 and chamade...just🤣🤯
Whilst a little fast for my personal taste, and I don't play it at anything like that pace, tempo is all about acoustic, articulation, and observance of the nature of the piece. Oh...and technical ability!
So, fine. It worked well, and was an impress8ve and clearly passionate performance.
    Well done! 👏👏

Virtuosity without doubt. But does the virtuosity serve the music? For me, it's just too fast, and many of the details that Widor painstakingly wrote into the score, especially in articulation, are lost. Please play it slower and reveal what Widor envisioned. So many performances of this ignore Widor's intentions.
