  • In this video, I will walk you through 3 levels of jazz triplets applied to the drum set. We will be working out of Ted Reed's book Syncopation Pg. 56. If you don't have the book there will be music on the screen and you can grab the PDF for this lesson below. These exercises will help you to develop mastery of phrasing triplets using the snare and toms, snare and cymbals, and in using triplets to play interesting time patterns.

Jazz...while I like it...I have never been very good at it :) Thanks for breaking it down! You're the man!

Thanks man, I grew up playing Dixie, which is a form of early jazz, has a bit of a second line feel to it. From there I moved to rock, so I have always approached the drums from a jazz point of view. I don't claim to be the best jazz drummer, but concepts like listening, kicking accents, and keeping the music moving forward have really served me as a drummer over the years. It's one of those things that you get batter at the more you do it, and you really need to play with other musicians to get it right.

Great vid Mike. I love drums! I had a few lessons years ago because I was a guitar teacher and I got a job where I was required to teach some basic drums as well as guitar and keyboard. I'd love to get back into the drums again. I've subscribed. 😉
