Modern automotive anti-theft systems, use a coded ignition key to authorize the engine turn on. In most cases, another module or computer, such as the ECM, Body Control Module, or the Instrument Cluster Module, serves as the actual anti-theft module. The way the anti-theft systems works is through an ignition key transponder.
The ignition key transponder is embedded inside the back or plastic side of the ignition key. It is a non battery operated circuit. This circuit is powered by an induction coil, that generates a current in the key transponder coil itself, which powers the signal code generation circuit. The code is then received by the anti-theft module, and an OK command is then issued for engine start.
Now that we've given a brief overview of the circuit, we present here, the Ignition Key Transponder Detector.
Well, you might ask, why do we need this Gadget? The answer is simple, because it allows you do know if the key transponder itself is working, tells you if a new key is not a fake, and will even decode the passkey code, and show you as an oscilloscope waveform.
Here, is how the Ignition Key Transponder Detector works.
The Ignition Key Transponder Detector works in the ....Get the whole story right here in this video... Enjoy...

Absolutely, it'll help a tech check if the key is generating and transmission a code. There's really no need to see the code, but if you like just access it with this gadget and a scope. Once you see code transmitted, you can rest assured the key is not the issue. Then, go on to diagnose the cylinder coil, module, etc...
You'll only see this tool here in our channel. We built a couple of these, so it works. We'll be developing CG animated HowToBuild videos at the end of the series. Thank you.

This is a very old circuit, which is suggested by the chip manufacturer. The 555 timer has been around for years and it's a main stay in oscillators. Build it and get it to work. Tweak the values if needed, then post back with more...

Yes, Yes... The distance is of course very close. Remember, the ign. transponder and the pick up coil (if you will) are next to each other on the steering wheel. I might have made a mistake, but stick to the chip specs. Good luck on your build and keep me posted here or message whichever. THanks...

You can use a wide range of coils and even make it yourself. Experiment a bit with it and post back if possible.

I have build this gadget but I encounter a problem, the coil magnetic field is to small so the key that need to be tested must be very close to it, others are not started by the coil. My question here is: what is the voltage that your supply to this tool(meaning the Vcc on Ic1 and Ic2)? you have there a 12v zener diode but on the datasheet of the ic's the maximum voltage is 7v.

Ok, you are CORRECT in everything you said above. But you're confused on the scenarios I presented. Scenario 1) Some systems if cylinder & coil is together. One goes, so does the other. 2) Say on a GM (no need for scanner) if key is faulty, go to yard, get cheap combo, done. OTHERWISE, get key, cut key, & program key. Consumer pays 3 times 3) If car won't start, is it key, Is it cyl.? Gadget proves the key. 80% of time it's the key. Don't need to change coil if key is broken, but cheaper at yard

  • @ADPTraining
    @ADPTraining  Před 11 lety +1

    1) On GM and a few other makes you don't need a scanner to program new key. This gadget is irrelevant of the programming method.
    2) The video gives different scenarios. If your cylinder/coil is busted then buying used cylinder/key combo is a must. The other cylinder key cut is different. We've seen many of these at yards that sell for next to nothing. It is profitable or cost effective to re-use these parts. Often times the cylinder breaks, while electric parts are still good. Makes sense?

hi even if you buy used key and cylinder, unless we program ECM or BCM how do we get the used key pass code stored in ECM. in other words used key and cylinder cant be used unless ECM store used key pass code.
pls advise. Second if we can program ECM to store the new passcode, why do we need to change the cylinder. just a new key and reprogram from ECM should be sufficient , right?

Thanks much. i thought the purpose of the cylinder/coil is to induce the current on key to retreive passcode and cylinder/coil have nothing to do with pass code because i assume ECM/TCM eventually verifies the pass code that was generated by key. so why do we need to change coil, when the key is broken. second when we get used coil and key pair, how do ECM/TCM ever know the pass code of the changed key.

what about resending the code (after detecting) to the transceiver or sensor ring in ignition switch?
Precisely, I want to extend the range or distance between the transponder key and the transceiver in steering, so that I convert to push-button-start system

I would feed +5v, or use a 78L05 three-terminal voltage regulator to step-down the voltage to the 5v node and leave-out the zener with the 1K resistor as the 78L05 will be a cleaner more stable 5v. Next IC1 are both on the same chip it is a hex inverter(hex meaning six inverters on this 74AC04). One of them being on pins 1 and 2, and that one is being used a oscillator, so keep the two resistors, and the two capacitors very close by to pins 1 and 2. Also keep the 690uH coil close by along with the 0.0024uF capacitor, but you can use your car's transponder pick-up coil to your make and model car you have instead of the 690uF. The diode to the right of the 690uH coil use the same 1N4148 signal glass diode.
Theirs a booboo on the diagram of the 74AC04. Pin 3 and 5 must be connected-Cannot leave that not connected, so pins 3,5,9,11, and 13 must be all tied together. They form a driver to drive the "690uH" coil circuit.
