  • In this video, I detail how I upgraded my Perception Outlaw 11.5 Kayak with a Minn Kota Endura 30lb trolling motor. All in, I spent about $160 to make the change and my only regret is that I didn't make this upgrade sooner! It has completely changed how I use the kayak, along with how often I take it on the lake.
    Parts Used for the Upgrade:
    * Minn Kota Endura 30lb trolling motor: $90
    www.amazon.com...
    * DC Breaker (50 amps): $30
    www.amazon.com...
    * SeaFlo Hatch with detachable cover: $10
    www.amazon.com...
    * Battery Box: $12 (Fleet Farm)
    * Misc. fasteners / sheetmetal / wiring / scrap wood: $20
    NOTE: The retrofit concepts I detail in this video aren't exclusive to Perception Kayaks so don't hesitate to think outside the box and try something similar with your kayak/canoe!

    Amazing. What size of hatch did you pick for the kayak the 4 inch our the 8 inch?

      Hi Mike- I used a 4" Seaflo hatch I found on amazon - if you are creative, you can use the interior space in your kayak for additional storage / dry place for your phone-keys / etc too. Some hatches include a pouch also so make sure you browse online for other options. I'll add a link below for the hatch I used. Long term, I might get adventourus and increase the hatch size and see if I can get a smaller trolling motor battery mounted internally with hookup posts external for charging/etc. A big benefit of an internal battery is an even lower center of gravity and water protection too. Thanks for the comment Mike!

    Great video. Ditch the heavy battery and go lithium. I have a 55 amp hour life pro. Fits under the seat 1/2 the weight and lasts longer. Then the back can hold a crate. Also saves time having to take the battery in and out during transport or at least easier to move around. I also upgraded to a potentiometer. I had the stock switch and it worked fine but the versatility of variable speed cant be beat. I can hold in a spot against current. I do like your steering better than mine. I have an arm with a tiller. It works fine just takes a while to get used to. Its simple and out of the way so I guess ill keep it that way.

    Thanks for the great diy. I just got a Outlaw and am planning on putting a trolling motor on it for next spring fishing as It really gets windy here in Cen Tex, at Belton Lake, Still house lakes and the many lakes on Ft. Hood.

      Hi Chris / glad you like it / I've accumulated a lot of tools over the years - the one somewhat "specialized" tool is the bending brake / If interested, I got it at harbor freight for $50-$60. Thanks for the comment!

    Hello Joe! Really interesting modifications. I had no idea it was that simple to remove the top of the motor and lengthen the wires to a switch made more accesssible to control the speed. I see may people rig pulley systems to steer the motor, but almost nobody does anything to control the speed and this was really puzzling to me... Can you provide more insight into the kind of switch that is? I am familiar with soldering and using blade connectors, but that switch is a mystery to me... also, can you tell us which cable (pins) color does what on the motor? Thanks Joe and happy fishing!

    Awesome video, I have an Outaw and planning to do the same thing. How long do you get trolling with the battery you have?
    I'm kinda crossed between saving money for an Epropulsion, or just using a Minn Kota. I just want to be able to fish all day

    Hey I saw your loft bed video and wondered what the dimensions would be for that but for a twin bed? Thank you please respond soon

    • @TacoJoesHouse
      @TacoJoesHouse  Před 2 lety

      Hey Jimmy - twin bed dimensions are 38" x 75" so if we keep it simple, you need to reduce all shelving support width lumber 16" ( - ie - the shelves) from what I detail in the video (54"-38" = 16") - and - the bedframe obviously is narrower too - and - the "L" of the desk will also be reduced 16". I'd mock the desk up and make sure it will work out for your build but you have a lot of options and this configuration will easily support a twin bed. Thanks for the comment and good luck!
