Brown B-1 Racer - 1933 Original - Arrival & Assembly @ Fantasy of Flight

  • OK, Gang, here’s a video we put together of the Fantasy of Flight arrival of our original 1933 Brown B-1 Racer!
I acquired this in 2012, and it’s the only one ever built. It had been used in aviation competitions from the mid 30's to the 40's, mostly piloted by Ralph Bushey, a famous racing pilot of the time.
The plane was damaged in a crash during a race, when the engine fell out. It was put into storage until it could be re-built, in 1947, and flew exhibitions for a couple of years after. It was then put back into storage.
The B-1 passed through a number of owners before I acquired it for my collection at Fantasy of Flight.

Doing some digging it would seem the plane originally had a 185 HP Menasco engine not surprisingly also from California and had a top speed of 240 mph. The engine in it now is a Continental C-85 installed in the 40’s. Not to be confused with the very similar Alden Brown B-1 Racer from the same period. Glad Kermit has an interest in the race planes from the golden age.
