    Yes I won a variegated dwarf bamboo as a door prize at a respected botanical garden’s annual party and a year after I planted it it was all over the place, ran into the neighbor’s yard too and I had to dig a lot to get it in bounds. They never warned me.

    • @johnlordssecretgarden
      @johnlordssecretgarden  Před 3 lety +2

      There seems to be only one ‘safe’ variegated dwarf bamboo and that’s Arundinaria viridistiatus, or whatever it’s called now

    I'm from Chicago and have Green Bamboo. All the leaves have died from the winter but the stalk is green and strong. Will new green leaves grow on the old stocks replacing the Dead Leaves?

    Do clumpers need a barrier? Great videos Lord!

    • @maramorrison3144
      @maramorrison3144 Před 4 lety

      No need for a barrier. Just cut back any unwanted growth at the bottom of the clump if it starts to spread. I do this once every month to keep mine in check.

    Hi love your vedios very informative. I have a question do you find the fergesia nitida runs at all or does it behave. Thank you.

    • @johnlordssecretgarden
      @johnlordssecretgarden  Před rokem +1

      It runs slowly but over time takes up a good bit of space and it arches over when mature to fill even more space.

      @@johnlordssecretgarden thank you I think I will keep them in pots as my border isn't that big and it's next to a neighbours fence.

    John, I'm bamboozled as to why these plants have such unpronounceable names! But very interesting for me as I intend to use these beautiful plants for screening on my patio. Will they be comfortable facing west?

      James Graham I have been growing Bamboo in a commercial setting for most of my life. I happy to report that many many species perfer west facing areas. Where is your growing environment? If you provide me with your location or growing zone, and some context of what you're trying to accomplish in your garden, I can assist you further.

      Hi James, that's a good question. Yes it should be ok.

  • @roguedungeondelver5738

    Hi John love the Vivax it's gigantic! I have Phyllostachys Nigra Punctata and Phyllostachys Aurea( green with bumpy canes at the end no yellow at all) How much do they spread, should I put in a root barrier or are they well behaved, thank you.!

    • @johnlordssecretgarden
      @johnlordssecretgarden  Před 3 lety

      Phyllostachys aurea I found quite invasive and not at all yellow. P. aureosulcata vars are better. P. vivax does run a bit, often quite far out from the plant, but easily controlled as not a lot of canes are produced each year.

    • @roguedungeondelver5738
      @roguedungeondelver5738 Před 3 lety

      @@johnlordssecretgarden Thanks John , all the other sites said the green form of aurea with the nodes is less invasive then yellow in Irish/UK Climate, how is Phyllostachys Nigra in comparison, thank you.
