  • "Ukraine from an innovation perspective have torn up all of the doctrine manuals and the West is looking at Ukraine thinking 'oh my goodness, crikey'”.
The West have been given a "real masterclass" in "hollowing out" the Russians but allies need to double support to embolden Ukraine, Phillip Ingram tells Frontline.

I was in Dnipro one evening when refugees arrived from Mariupol, consisting mostly of young mothers with children. Walking amongst them, looking into the children’s eyes, I found the wonder and joy of youth having been shocked out of them. The spiritual and psychological impacts of this debacle will loom largely over Ukraine, in the post-Putin reign of terror.

What the guy described in the first 32 seconds is EXACTLY how a smaller army or less well armed army fights a larger better armed enemy (but one that's like Russia, rigid, lacks tactical skills) you wear the enemy down tactically retreat and live to fight another day and keep on harassing your enemy and fighting them on your terms where you are strongest tactically and they are weakest. It's classic warfare tactics from Sun Tzu The Art of War.. you never try to go all-in against a superior enemy that will crush you, you keep them at arms length...same as a technically skilled boxer would who is fighting someone with a hard punch and long reach but who is hopeless on the ropes or in close fighting contact. Use your enemies size and weaknesses to your advantages and gradually wear them down moral wise, equipment and munitions wise, then go forward on the offensive more aggressively when the enemy is weakest not while its still strong and well armed.

As the largest country in the world, Russia would have the most to lose in a nuclear conflict, which is a risk they are likely aware of. In the event of a nuclear strike, they would stand to lose the most territory in the world, a fact they understand, making it highly unlikely they would take such a risk. Their country would be dived into many pieces, the risk that is not worth of taking to gain Ukrainian Land. They will not risk Nuclear for this reason. West should not fell for it; it is only propaganda to steal Ukrainian Land without any serious consequences. I think it might have been the Netherlands who said their donated F16s could be arriving in Ukraine in June. There has been a bit of obsfucating across the board upon the exact delivery period in the media, and possibly for good reason in times of war. Thankfully the British Armed Forces are based on us being an island nation within allied defence pacts and a nuclear deterrence. To say the UK wouldn’t cope with 10% of the Ukrainian front line based on our mass is 100% accurate, we wouldn’t, but if the UK had a land border with Russia the capabilities and scale of UK armed forces would obviously be very different.
The UK is and I hope will remain a close ally of Ukraine, with skills and professionalism that they can share in a safe training environment, while also gaining the opportunity to learn from the Ukrainians who are without doubt the current experts on this type of warfare.
I’m a proud son and grandson of military parents and grandparents (including mother and grandmother), but I don’t go in for “British exceptionalism” as a rule. @@shaun1463 The squeeze on military budgets since the early 90's has improved efficiciencies and innovation in the British Military. Its a bit like Christmas to be getting fractions of percent of GDP budegtry increses never mind 1-2% and the ability to further modernise fleets in the 3 strands. There is now the opportunity to fill manpower shortages that are restricting deployment of assets and saw naval vessels in dock rather than on patrol. After the First World War there absolutely was a first, if not unique today, culture of every life matters and the fostering of real comraderie that leads to the sort of exceptionalism you allude to. The British Army in particulary had experience of unconventional warfare at home in Northern Ireland that stood to them in Iraq and Afghangistan - it is interesting that Ukraine is showing how to fight conventional war unconventionally, scaring quite a few western militaries in to rethinking how future wars can be fought in a low tech manner and not only as an arms race.
On a different issue, as a NHS ED grunt, greater spending will always be a help but like in a military sphere it depends on how it is spent. To start, people need to be seen as a primary resource and invested heavily in, access to education including rolling back university fees, targeted education in key and understaffed sectors WITH the ability to retain those skillsets. I would say academic and economic integration with key and neighbourig allies with joint up thinking on social resilience, eg securing regional supply chains, deling with climate change, countering cyber threats, international crime, multi country asylum apllicants by individuals - so ironiclly membership of a likeminded bloc like the EU, more likeminded that a different, macro interests rather than pushed micro domestic issues of migrant resentment, postcode envy, and a generally unhappy society that drove Brexit on the back of a pet project, driving big wedges in to the small cracks in society like on EU legal reach where in reality there was always a veto on legal overreach. They will say there is record spending happening across societal services but in real terms there isnt. Looking at why the biggest council authority in Europe is bankrupt, why funding isnt delivering frontline progress, why growing unrest and anger is still present post Brexit etc. Many issues that can be exploited by foreign players to exploit tbh by driving an information agenda away from social cohesion....the happening battle on the homefront maybe?

I used to have respect for Biden & Blinken. No longer, because they won't greenlight attacks on RU military targets nor will they help with creating a safe Ukr airspace (yet they helped Israel shoot down missiles). I won't vote for tRump, who is worse, but I'll vote for a 3rd candidate in Nov who has some spine

To put the 1,000 km front line into perspective from Britannica in WWI:-
At its greatest extent, the front ran some 440 miles (700 km) from the Belgian coast at Nieuwpoort, through France, and all the way to the border of Switzerland, just south of the Alsatian village of Pfetterhouse. The contours of the line reflected the extent of German success during the war.9 May 2024
