Wilber was like the best corner, linebacker, and defensive end all in one player. There has never been anyone like Marshall and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Can you imagine if he just concentrated on edge rushing, people would be saying Lawrence WHO?
As a Washington fan I can tell you Wilbur Marshall is best linebacker I ever saw in the Burgundy and Gold. When we won the SB in 91 I remember Madden and Summerall debating who should be MVP of the game Rypien or Marshall. Super underrated. A Beast
@Barney Weiss 86 bears had less sacks then the 85 and 84 teams, shit ditka and buddy say 84 D was the best of them all!72 sacks is still a nfl record today! BOOM! go bears!
I was in the north end zone at soldier field for the Bear / Ram playoff game. Twenty degrees, snow flurries coming down, Wilbur running with the ball, Fridge and Otis ready to blast anyone who tries to tackle Wilbur! just a magical moment!!!
Giants picked the wrong linebacker in 1984. Had the Giants picked Rickey Jackson in 1981 instead of TE Dave Young or Wilber Marshall instead of Carl Banks in 1984……the Giants would have had a stronger defense in 1984 and 1985.
Fencik flying horizontal through the air in spear formation to the QB was a site to see. Dananimal was a beast and smart. I miss watching those guys play.
Childhood friend! Greatest all around high school athlete I have ever seen!Allstate in every sport he played in high school! Southern player of the year in high school football, All American also! He should be in the NFL Hall of fame!
Do the whole defense should get indicted as a team D. :/ but u right, but if they inducted him so many more bears would have to be just cause ya kno. Idk if debt or Otis Wilson or anyone else is in. I kno Walter and singletary are I think Hampton is too
That defense made the bears OL solid.Loved watching Mark Bortz win battles with any defensive linemen he faced. The rest of that line was tough to get through.
Thanks for doing that! I'm here from Facebook. Me and my sister went to school with him and his brother at Astronaut High School in Titusville, Florida. My sister is still friends with him and his brother Wendell is my age. Wilber was also a tight end in high school, which would explain his ball skills as well as his nimbleness running with the ball. :) What a stud!
My favorite linebacker ever! Thanks so much for this awesome video. I was too young to remember the 85 bears but I loved watching the highlights and I loved him on the skins. Old school neck roll. Wilbur was underrated a little undersized but a classic linebacker through and through
Nice to see this guy get the praise that he deserves. I miss defensive football players of the 70s 80s and early 90s such as Wilber Marshall Otis Wilson Dennis Smith Lawrence Taylor Ronnie Lott Lester Hayes etc. Watching defense in the 21st century is pathetic!!
Been saying that for years. If Sam Mills got elected, so does Wilber. And I am a Giant fan, and as a kid, I used to be scared of Wilber because he was that good for both Chicago and Washington.
Those bears had the greatest, hardest hitting defense ever!. Good thing they existed back then as it would not be possible in todays weak NO FUN NO FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Completely awsesome LB!!! ..as stated by several others, the most underrated LB in League history. Sorry ppl, Wilbur Marshall was the best!!! ...better than ANYONE!!!
I darn near cried when WM left the BEARS for the REDSKINS and BUDDY RYAN to to the EAGLES. Man that 13th gm against the Dolphins screwed things up. My girl even began acting weird, strange and funny after that.
LT rewrote the book on OLB in a 3-4 , then you had andre tippett , kevin green and a few yrs later derrick thomas . Wilbur played in that 4-3 scheme and i forgot how bad ass he was because well time just passes by. i live here in northern va and remember and i hated the bears for trading him to the skins being a die hard cowboys fan . Saying all that to say it became a sack driven league and an OLB in the 3-4 started the movement for OLB , so marshall didnt have sack totals(most sacks in a season was 6 ) never mind the big hits and a lot of tackles . i also think he gets the label of a dirty player which is not right . Marshall plays in a 3-4 scheme with his speed he would be in the hall , even with his body of work in 12 yrs he only had 3 pro bowl nods (goes back to being a dirty player imo) if he had 5 pro bowl nods and maybe another 1 or 2 all pro 1st teams he may have already been in especially with 2 rings and being on that 85 bears team . He has to be up there in the 4-3 OLB one of the top 10 to ever play that position , especially the way he played it . A BAD MAN !!!
Has nothing to do with what scheme he played in. Wilbur was the first modern day free agent and the first to get paid. He broke up the NFL's plantation system for control of players. Then he sued the NFL for disability payments for the severe injuries he suffered. Wilbur is in poor health and has financial problems nowadays. Every free agent who came after should contribute to Wilbur' benefit.
@@ecnumber1fan Funny you say that. I had a long paragraph typed out but decided not to send it. I started off saying I really liked Hampton, Wilson and Dent, too, but then started rambling about Dennis McKinnon, Dave Duerson and Todd Bell*. Easier to just say BEAR DOWN!
@@patron40silver hahaha that's funny. I'm from Houston but I love the Bears. I guess they are my other team, so many greats. Not to mention Butkus. They have brought us some really great football 🏈
LT is the best of all time. But for a good five to six year span Marshall was rt there with him at that outside linebacker position. While LT and Marshall could do everything such as cover , and drop into coverage. Some coaches named Buddy Ryan and Bill Belicheck said hey we are going to send them into your back field to strike fear into all qb’s fullbacks and running backs, block them if u can lol 😂 coaches probably begged them to drop them into coverage!
Wilber was a killer. I can recall watching him in a game at Florida, and it seemed like he made about 10, 15 tackles in a row. That hit he put on Joe Ferguson would get him suspended for “boo- koo” games now. I’m not knocking it though cause at that time it was legal.
Best outside linebacker in that era not named Lawrence Taylor. Dude was a beast on steroids not needing to take drugs.they don’t make em like that no mo.
Best defensive player in Florida history and best defensive player in college football for 2 years after Lawrence Taylor and Hugh Green went to the NFL
I simply will never understand why a team franchise that makes 4 billion a year couldn't keep the 1980's Bears best players together. It isn't like they didnt have the money.
You have the all time greatest linebackers from Chicago, let's start with #61..Bill George...#51 Dick Butkus, #50 Mike Singletary...#54, Brian urlacker... overlooking #58, Wilbur Marshall, and #55 Otis Wilson would be a slight not only to them, but to the NFL. Never, ever has there been a linebacking triple threat as fearse as Wilson, Singletary, Marshall coming at you.
Lifelong Bears fan but....Ham, Russell, Lambert might disagree. Marshall was best of those 3. Singletary was overrated his last 5 years imho. Urlacher ranks higher. Could play more like an oversized safety at times. Plus he didn't have the front 4 that Singletary had for years. He took over that Monday night game against the Cardinals! RIP Dennis Green.
If he was used more as a pass rusher, maybe his sacks would have been much higher and maybe his numbers would have looked better for the HOF. But forget his numbers. His dominance on the football field should have him elected to the HOF. Shame that he isn't.
One of the GREATEST performing Florida Gators....ever. Check out on CZcams 1982 Florida vs USC (University of Southern California) Sean Salisbury QB for USC. Wilber almost single handedly wrecked the USC offense in that game.
I may understand that players are better athletes now but Damn! These guys were big time hitters. I know rules were different but playing in those days was truly alot tougher. You had to deliver hits and take them too.
man im not bears man but the chicago bears always got some dogs on their team. always have the meanest players hahaha. and not in dirty playing way either
He was fantastic!! Hall of Fame 100 percent!
Probably the most underrated LB in league history. Wilbur was a FREAK, and the Bears defense was never the same when he left for Washington.

That was probably the most iconic moment from the 85 season. You're right it was magical.
He was my favorite 85 Bear!
Definitely my favorite linebacker...was crushed when he left Chicago
Aw the good old days when football was real
Marshall was the best. Every player on that Defense did their job very well. No defense can match what Da Bears Defense could do. Simply the best.
