✎ He was nine years old when he first began piano lessons. He was in a few bands as a teenager. He identifies Aerosmith as having been his main musical influence as a child. He co-founded Metallica in October 1981 after answering a classified advertisement by drummer Lars Ulrich. Metallica has won nine Grammy Awards and released ten studio albums, three live albums, four extended plays and 24 singles. He's mainly known for his intricate rhythm playing, but occasionally performs lead guitar duties and solos. He was ranked at no. 8 in Joel McIver's book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists. In Guitar World's poll, Hetfield was placed as the 19th greatest guitarist of all time. The first single Hetfield ever bought was "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. He writes the majority of the guitar harmonies, as well as writing the lyrics, vocal melodies, and co-arranging the songs with Ulrich.

It is not about the gig itself, it is about the political environment around it. Somebody thought it will be a good idea to make a big metal gig in the heart of Soviet Union, during its biggest crysis, just before/during the collapse. That is why army was there, they didn't really know what is going on, lol. :)

Trevor Ambrose, to me they haven't got a timeline. They're eternal. I knew about Nothing Else Matters, but I first listened properly to a Metallica song during my freshman year at college, first it was "Enter Sandman", then came "Seek 'n Destroy", then came "Sad But True". I was texting a girl classmate of mine late in the night, and on my playlist came "Master of Puppets". I asked myself "What the fuck is this?? It's awesome." The rest is history...

IMO, what makes Mr. James Hetfield so successful, entertaining and a good decent man is, because he says "we don't take ourselves too serious."
That is so simple yet so profound. He is a human being who's comfortable in his own skin, he tries hard and has pride in what he does, but never tries to impress or have hidden agendas. James is James and he's very comfortable being James:)

When Metallica makes mistakes like collaborating with Lou Reed or using a tin can for a snare, I pay attention and don't make the same mistakes. These guys definitely have balls to try new things, even if it doesn't go well. I'll take Metallica's imperfections over a thousand generic metal bands that are technically good, but have no unique creative bone in their collective body.

i’ve always been a metallica fan and i’m so proud of the men they’ve become. seeing them doing publicity for hardwired, they seemed so grounded and filled with gratitude to be where they are. i felt super proud of them and i’m happy theyre so balanced and well adjusted these days. theres no point having success if you arent mentally switched on enough to enjoy it.

Just seen Metallica in Seattle 8-9-17 (seen them many times) Love them all but James has some brilliant statements! When they came on stage he stated 'METALLICA DOESN'T GIVE A SHIT!!!!!! We don't give a shit what color you are! We don't give a shit how old you are, we don't give a shit about who you want to love or who you identify as. You are HERE, and that makes you part of the Metallica family!" What an amazing message! What a brilliant example for the entire population of the stadium. September 7, 1991 I saw MetallicA for the first time in Mainz , Germany (Finthen Airfield) it was the last tour they played that they did Not headline ! Three weeks later they played the infamous Moscow Russia show ! I feel really lucky to have seen them on this Historic tour.
I have seen MetallicA several times since in Germany and in the U.S.
I will never forget the excitement, passion and energy I felt for the first time, seeing the Best Metal band of All time, MetallicA.

I'm 33. Metallica has been my favorite band for most of my life. I've seen pics from the '91 Moscow show, but didn't know the significance until this video. Seeing that clip from Enter Sandman where one Russian soldier stands guard while there is another soldier crowd-surfing with his hands in the air. Knowing the story behind that image is pretty powerful!

The Monsters of Rock in 1991 in Moscow had many flags of different countries in the same place, integrating the same event, all for the same benefit, united at the human expression of such powerful emotion that comes with heavy music. That is an accomplishment. Hetfield was one of the "masters of ceremony".

I connected with all ideas on the list but 6, 8, and 10 were the most potent. Six, in the world that surround us right now, it entirely too easy to get lost in a sea of crap and emptiness. So honesty with yourself and others is critical. Plus you can never evolve if you're lying to yourself. I have a paralyzing fear on stage performing anything in front of people. So to move past it, it is a moral imperative to be a performer. Embracing nervousness. Most importantly is to connect people. There is no better way to do this than music. Music transcends ALL negativity, transforming garbage (hate, fear, control, etc) into gold (the light of love.) uniting people despite all the odds.

James Hetfield is a legend. 30 years ago I didn't like Metallica very much. I'm glad I learned what they stand for and how they influenced others. I watched only one show of them in an unuseful hall in Germany, bad sound. I really would appreciate to watch them once again on an open air event.

I love it when he said he get "in the zone". . 12:06 I also learned English from Metallica. 1988 (AJFA Album). I was 17. Now, almost 45, I do business overseas in one of the most spoken languages in the whole world. Obvious: English. I lost fear, and you learn from others, as well as making mistakes, but Metallica was the spark to start with enthusiasm. I owe them that one. Im from Puerto Rico, but Tom Araya is from Chile (actually his name is Tomás Enrique Araya Díaz), and moved to USA at 8. Do you notice something wrong on Tom singing at light speed *Jesus Saves! You think youll see the pearly gates when death takes you away!* ? Lars Ulrich is Danish. He had trouble on English yet touring for Monsters of Rock 1988 (with Van Halen, Dokken and Queensryche). And... yes, Im getting old (not bald, thankfully).
