The trick to mounting Leica Thread Mount lenses is to set the lens on its minimum focusing distance. This retracts the rear focusing cam on the lens and it won't collide with the camera's internal rangefinder coupling arm. You can now easily align the lens to the mount. It will take more time when changing lenses but I find it helpful because it also prevents damage to the rangefinder coupling arm.
To calibrate the Canon 7's rangefinder, you just need to remove the silver screw on the front next to the rangefinder. Its just a cap, not a real screw. Under that you can insert a philips head screwdriver and turn it to adjust the rangefinders Horizontal alignment. To adjust the vertical alignment, there is a small cap with two holes in it next to the shutter speed dial. This also hides a small flat head screw which can be turned to adjust rangefinder patch. Make sure you have a lens on and set it to infinity while adjusting. I found the vertical is better to do first, then the horizonal.
Slotted, not Phillips (unless somebody lost the original.) And the vertical adjustment is super super touchy… turn it a tiny amount, check, turn again, etc. Re Jupiter lens, better make sure it's not dragging on the inside of your P… that might be why focusing feels stiffer. Sometime when the camera is empty, set the shutter speed on B, open the back, open the shutter, and look through the back to make sure the rear barrel of the lens isn't dragging on anything inside. P came before 7 and has a less sophisticated viewfinder (framelines for only three lenses instead of five.) They were both superbly made and are super nice to use.
Hey dude, love the vid. Fellow London canon P user in the south. It's easy to calibrate a P. There's a screw on the front which does the verticle axis, and the rangefinder on the front (which has the ring around it) does the horizontal axis. You just take the metal ring away and there's two little indentations in the element. You just rotate them around. Pop the camera on a tripod, fix the focus to infinity and line up the patches on something in the distance. To make doubly sure you can then use a tape measure to 3ft and set an item on a table and focus close to check near focus. But as long as infinity is good it should be fine. I got a P because it's mechanically a little simpler without all the bells and whistles that I could deal with the little issues like this. Hope it helps. All the best, JC
With any screw i usually turn it backward til i feel the start of the thread click together. People always look at me like i don't know how to use screws 😂
Hell yeah bro! Glad to see you joining the Canon P gang! Can't wait to see what you make with it! I just posted a travel photography video with my Canon P today haha
Probably others have already mentioned it but both the shutter speed issue and the rangefinder misalignment can be addressed with adjustment screws on the underside of the camera (You need to remove the bottom plate). Japan Vintage Camera describes the method while walking through either the P or the 7, I forget which but I would guess its a similar adjustment in both cases.
I would say the biggest problem with the P, aside from its multiple frameline viewfinder is the camera light baffles that get in the way when different lenses are mounted. That is what causes the stiffness when trying to turn the lens to focus.
I’ve had a Canon P for a while and am quite fond of it! I had been using my Leica IIIf, but I found the rangefinder / viewfinder to be a bit awkward at times. I had considered a Leica M, but really couldn’t justify it. The P uses all of my L-39 lenses, though, so it seemed the best choice. Not only that, but the experience using it isn’t different enough from an M3 to worry about! One thing - that resistance that you’re experiencing might by the lens rubbing against the light baffles inside. You might want to investigate that… Oh, and I use a KEKS light meter with it - works great! It also fits on the IIIf, making it a bit easier to use in difficult lighting situations. 😁
I was thinking the same thing about the resistance. That's something that shouldn't change no matter what camera you put it on unless something's blocking the mechanical movement.
@@ribsy I heard the warnings about the Jupiter lens so, since I didn't already have a 35mm L-39 lens, I picked up the Canon 35mm ƒ2.8 - a wonderful lens! It was also quite inexpensive, though a bit more than the Jupiter. I can also use the Canon lens on the Leica and my Voightlander Bessa cameras, so it has been a great investment. I also gather that the damage to the baffles can be cumulative, so you might want to reconsider your choice!
Ok. Ok. Hear me out people. First, this man is nice wit it in the kitchen. He’s got mad photography skills behind the camera. He’s got game in the darkroom, he develops and makes his own prints. He made his own film! And now he’s declared : “I got Leica money.” We need a Ribsy meme pronto!! Or a shirt or something!
Maybe 12 years ago, I thought it was time for me to look into getting a rangefinder again. I looked at Leicas, and a fairly beat up M2 or M3 with a lens was running $2000. That was not in my budget. I stared looking for the cheaper alternatives and there were many. They were mostly bigger, bulkier, clunkier, unattractive, and poor fit and finish. Most had a single, fixed lens. When I looked at the Canon rangefinders, they were by far the closest thing to a Leica but 1/10 the price. They made a lot of varieties in the 50's with minor changes. Used ones all seemed to be in far better condition than the Leicas, shutter speeds all sounded accurate, where most Leicas needed servicing. I am not a professional photographer so maybe I am overlooking some crucial advantage of the Leica over the Canon that makes it worth 10 times as much. I certainly can't see it. I would guess that status has a lot to do with the price differential. Over the past 12 years Canon rangefinder prices remain steady while Leicas continue to explode in price. Canon rangefinders-beautiful cameras at an even more beautiful price.
The p’s have been flying under the Radar for a while , but it seems people are discovering them now, they are a solid camera and good looking camera, I have a 35mm f2 canon serenar lens , which is a beautiful looking and designed lens , it looks stunning with the p , very high class vintage , not to mention its very compact , together they will fit in a decent size jacket pocket , these mechanical cameras will out it last us all.. for a couple of hundred , you are getting a lot of bang for your bucks…
Congrats! I very recently picked up the Canon P myself. Found a great deal for the camera with three Canon lenses that I could not longer resist. Had been thinking about the P as my entry into serious Rangefinders for over a year at this point but now I finally made the jump. Still adjusting a little bit but I'm sure it will become my daily driver and co-camera next to the Pentax 67. The two make a good pair ;)
I have a Canon P which has problems similar to your 7, and also sometimes gives completely black frames. I enquired about getting it CLAed, and the quote I got was more than the value of the camera. Perhaps I should go looking for a repair shop with a lower fee... One thing I noticed with the P is that it has a tendency to tilt forward when hanging from a strap. Something that the extra height of the 7 would actually help with perhaps?
A solution for the strap-problem is to attach both ends of the strap to for example the right strap attachment. I have done that on my Canon P and think it works great.
Just stumbled on this already old thread. I also have a 7 and a P. I use both with a handheld meter so the cold shoe is no issue. One issue with the 7 is that it tends to scratch your glasses (I wear glasses. Apart from that its basically the same cameras
I used to have Canon P but eventually I decided to just buy a Leica. I bought a Leica for my use and for investment as well..It can be both. But if I'm going to own a camera for the rest of my life then it will be a Leica. I mean they both the same tool that can take great pictures, but you'll appreciate nicer built quality and it's more comfortable to use. my Leica is actually simpler machine but that's what makes it so great.
@@ribsy I mean you couldn't say you don't like using Leica if you never really use it. I would love to see you try (not just hold it but maybe a week of shooting with it) and give me your impression.
I have had my Canon P for a year now and enjoy it a lot. Clear and easy to focus view finder and a very nice swoosh sound when making the exposure. I have the 50 mm f 1.4 and 35 mm f 1.8 and they are both very good for both BW and color.
Great, straightforward review, thanks. I love Canon RFs. I own the 7, 7sZ, VI-L, VI-T, and IVSB, along with the P. The P is my favorite, despite it being a simpler, supposedly downscale version of the VI (i.e., no frame line selector prism). It is simple and gorgeous. Even the recessed rewind lever is beautiful. I also love the Canon ltm lenses, but they are getting expensive, and hard to find without haze. I also have owned 6 Leicas, and presently own an M2 and M5, but I usually gravitate toward the Canon P first. Enjoy your camera!
Man, if you were ever visiting Japan, they have even better deals for these cameras than those from ebay. A lot of stores in Tokyo and Yokohama sell these for around $120 in great conditions. Last week I just saw a very old but excellent condition Contax IIIa + 50mm f1.5 Zeiss lens for only $220.
Interesting video here. There is a history about the early Nikon & Canon 35mm rangefinder cameras. They were essentially using Leica as their model; hence, the use of M39 lens mount identical to the Leica iiic, iiif, iiig. After WWII, the U.S. occupation forces in Japan wanted to encourage domestic industries and optics was one of them. During WWII, the imperial government took control of Nikon, Pentax and Canon to make war related instruments such as military binoculars, periscope lenses and maybe bombsights. These companies wanted to resume consumer products--and they were well made w good optics. Concurrent to this, soldiers in our occupation forces wanted cameras but could not afford the German Zeiss, Contax or Leica which then were the best known. The local demand and need to revive consumer products coincided well. The Japanese public and G.I.s liked these cameras which sold for less than their German counterparts which also sought their own revival after WWII. I believe there has been no single documentation of this history but it should be done. The reputation, quality and cost of Japanese cameras & optics took off and competed directly with German brands, eventually outselling them. The Canon 7 and Canon P are direct descendants of the post war effort to restore Japanese consumer cameras and optics. Wish someone would put together a book on this--it is very interesting history 🤔.
You can buy (if you can find one) a bracket with a cold shoe for your canon 7. I purchased one a couple of years ago from Roberts Cameras - not cheap but it works and looks OK - the 7s has the built in cold shoe and looks much better then a bracket on my 7
I had the same opinion about owning a Leica, I used to have a M3 but I never took it out, I eventually sold it to pay off my car. Now I definitely want a Canon 7 to replace it because there is nothing like the feeling of the build quality of these old rangefinders. I do have a canon canonet QL17 in perfect condition but it feels so cheap compared to something like the M3 and I assume the Canon 7 or P.
I have a brassed, black paint Canon P and paired with a Voigtlander 35 2.5 it’s my main 35mm, goes everywhere with me. Solid camera and I like the look and features way better than the C7 (never liked the meter). The only thing I don’t like is using the 35 frame lines while wearing glasses.
@@Wileyinthestreets it’s an okay performer, doesn’t blow me away in any one category, it’s really compact which is great, has a really short focus throw (0.9m-inf. in 1/4 turn),decent coatings and color rendition, but mine seems to need a ton of sharpening. I think it’s better than the Canon L39 options, especially for street.
Definitely a cold shoe and not a hot shoe (no hot shoe pin) . Funny enough that I was looking for a cold shoe rangefinder for one of my Baldalux 6x9 folder. That Canon P is tempting
i wanted to follow up on the Canon P rangefinder-which is a remarkable 35mm rangefinder. Both Canon and Nikon in the post WWII period imitated the Leica IIIc model because it was so well-known, reliable and gave great pictures. During WWII, the imperial government took over Japan’s optical companies and there were no consumer goods during this period, switching instead to gear for its military. After the war, there was a strong need to boost domestic industries and optics was one of the industries. Imitating the Leica IIIc model was done by Canon and Nikon, as well as in the Soviet Union with Fed, Zorky and Kiev cameras (though the latter are not nearly as smooth operating as Leica). The Canon P rangefinder uses the same M39 thread mount lenses like the Leica-and Canon made its version of them but Leica could also fit if you have one. Given they are similar specs to a Leica and can use the same lens mount, it stands to reason that the picture quality would be very good and easy to use. I have a Leica M3 with the Voigtlander 50mm Nokton lens and a Kodak Retina IIIC with its 50mm f 2 Schneider-Kreuznach lens, which are contemporary. Can easily appreciate what these all-metal cameras are capable of doing. There is a special joy and satisfaction from using these mainly metal cameras which are so precise, smooth and compact.
The P is my fave rangefinder. I've had the 7s and prefer the P to that one because the P is smoother in every function, the viewfinder is brighter, focus patch sharper. Of course the meter on the 7's don't work, too old. I loved the review, thanks for posting.
Back in the 1970's, I looked at M-series Leicas and even then, prices were breathtaking. I was already a Leica IIIa user, and had a collection of screw mount lenses. I decided that a built in (Selenium) light meter was unnecessary, since Ye Olde Sekonic L-28C was in my kit. So, instead of spending way too much for Wetzlar Gold, I could spend money on what matters, film and lenses. Back then, Nikkor and Canon Leica screw mount lenses were available and "priced for mortals." The Canon P was the perfect addition to the 35mm rangefinder lineup.;)
The rear element of your J-12 is rubbing on the internal frame of your P. That’s why the focus is harder to turn. Not recommended to use that lens on the P, works fine on the 7.
The P has a x1 viewfinder. I can shoot with both eyes open. It has a cleaner look without the knobs on the top and meter on the front. Historically the P was the Populaire (budget) vs the VL and VT. Canon 7 came after the P and could mount the 50mm f/0.95 monster lens.
I love my Canon P. It feels great in the hand. I will say make sure that the rangefinder window isn't loose. I used some clear nailpolish to keep it in place. Love the videos. Can't wait to see the photos you get with it.
Mate just a thought, your canon 7 might be experiencing shutter issues because you are using the Jupiter 12 on it. The rear might be in contact with the metal foil canon uses for its releases.
If your Jupiter 12 was made before a certain year, you run into issues with it on the P. That being said, my Jupiter 12 sits on the shelf since the Voigtlander 35mm f2.5 is a much better lens on the P. Using a Keks light meter on the P was the kick I needed to start learning how to meter by eye. It just felt too clumsy. Also adjusting the rangefinder on the P is really easy. Good luck with the new camera.
I love my Canon P. The design of the rewind crank is a beautiful touch. Also have the 7, mostly to use it with the Canon 50mm f/0.95. Both fantastic cameras.
Great video. Your Canon P is a camera the sold like hotcakes when it was released in the Late 50's. I have a couple Canon VT and VT Deluxe cameras from a couple years earlier with the bottom plate trigger similar to the Leicavit. Canon Rangefinders are superb cameras, like the Corvettes from the same era.
Hello Ribsy, This is Alex from San Francisco, and I also have the Canon 7, and a Canon Vt, as I see the Big Difference when you had them together as the RF window is not ALING as the P is a short base RF in which the 7, and the 7S is a log base RF window just like the Leica M series line. As the 35mm Jupiter on the P is that of the RF cam is why it was stiff that maybe the cam on the P needs to look at. As in which that I have One Russian 50mm Industar 2.8 for my 7 as it was out of aligned as I compare to the 50mm Canon 1.19 as it was a tab Off, I also did the same test on the Canon Vt, in which also it was off when I place the Industar lens, So I look at another video as I found 2 videos in re-calibrating the RF with simple tools. You need a tape measure, Highly small screwdriver, and a Spanner Wrench. I managed to calibrate my Canon 7 when I was working at the camera store as I went to the repair section, and got the tools, and then I asked the owner of the store if he can watch me do this. Well I did it, as he was proud of me. The store closed in 2017, and then in 2021 he passed away as I will be speaking at the memorial this August. I hope that it is useful, and helpful... The first one is from Snap Shots/Frames per Second, and the other is from a web site called: Japan Vintage Camera. The Japan Vintage Camera I bought a Olympus Pen EE 2 half Frame camera from him.... czcams.com/video/lYi0inSFDxE/video.html and : czcams.com/video/PwfYwHEjoAo/video.html
Ribsy, congrats on the Canon P, I'm sure that you'll enjoy it after a nice CLA. I've been enjoying mine for 3 1/2 years already and it's a pleasure to shoot. There are some nice Canon LTM lenses and other brand lenses available as well...
Sooner or later, you'll end up with a Leica. Just accept that fact now and you'll be grateful you took the shortcut. It's basically impossible to resist scratching the itch if you enjoy the rangefinder experience. Sincerely, A former anti-Leica photographer
@@ribsy looking forward to your Leica first impressions video in a few months titled “I GAVE IN - DOES IT LIVE UP TO THE HYPE?” You’re welcome for the catchy title 😎
Nice Canon P! I shot my first roll of New Classic EZ400 on my Nikon S2. It is now clear to me that I need to shoot the next roll on my Canon VI-T. I'll post some pics from that roll soon as I do 'em! Thanks for all the great vids and tips. Have fun with your new camera! (I'm a little jelly.)
I have bought lenses and cameras from Japan many times and only ever had one issue where the lens was an AI not the advertised AIS, the seller refunded straight away with no issues. I have always found photography goods from Japan are in better nick than they have stated. You’re spot on though when you say to check that the seller has good comments. Never used a canon, but the advance stroke on my Leica M3 and Nikon F3 just make me smile every time I use them, and that’s just about everyday. Cheers.
Not to be pedantic but the 7 was the upgrade, not the P. It introduced the light meter and included selectable framelines. There’s also the extra bayonet mount for the gimmicky 50/0.95 lens. The P was the budget option introduced 3 years earlier. Canon made great LTM rangefinders.
@@ribsy I agree with you. At least for me, when I see roughly the same thing but in a smaller package I think newer. If you ever fall down the Canon RF rabbit hole I suggest looking at the Canon V series, the L1-L3. And if you dont care about VF or framelines, the IV series, like the IVsb, are tiny and beautiful.
The Canon P Looks better than the 7. The bar left in front of the 7 just ruins it. Even if I already have a Leica M, I'd love to have a Canon P. 😀 Can't wait to see it in action in one of your videos.
I already had a Canon P but it is having some issues. But i also have just recently bought a Canon 7. I love these old rangefinder camera's they feel indestructible.
Hey buddy M39 has nothing to do with L39 lenses. M39 is an M42 with L39 screw thread. That's why you can't use M39 USSR lenses on either Canon RF or Leica RF cameras.
The lever that sends the lens focus position to the range finder on the P might be stiffer than the one on the 7. That could account for the difference in the focusing.
The Canon P is great.. If you don't wear glasses or don't shoot 35. Just kidding. I would still have mine if my wife didn't gifted me an M2 for my 30th birthday. Loved that CLUNK when you press the shutter. It's a great camera and I'm sure that the prices will heavily increase soon. So, if you're thinking of buying a, somehow, cheap rangefinder with interchangable lenses: do it now.
Got my canon P with an old canon 50mm 1.4 (1959 I think) - great combo - output very similar to leica equivalents…. As you say shopping from Japan is fine if you read the reviews of sellers and ignore the fact that almost everything is classed as Mint (+++++)
I have the Canon 7s(z) and it shot really well the first dozen rolls. However, my last roll with B&W and shot at the fast 1/1000 shutter speeds had the same issue you just showed. Had it fixed, and i'm about to develop the first roll since repair. Hope it's fixed!
In the 1980s, I started collecting Canon RF, acquiring a number of bodies. However, the P never got bought, as back then it was priced around double what it costs now, Sorry to heard that your 7 has shutter problems. Here in the US, it's practically impossible to find a competent repairman for these cameras, as the shutter in the 7/7s is very complex and difficult to service.without parts long unavailable. I'd get a CLA on the P before trying to service the shutter on your 7.
Would recommend this for someone who does portrait shoots? I shoot minolta now but I’m really in a debate between the canon 7, canon P and Nikon F3. Your canon 7 and canon P videos are drawing me this way.
As usual, thanks! Strange, my experiences with Japan are that I always got what was promised, and often better. I now also know what zone focusing is. For street photography, I always used a somewhat higher diaphragm and set the lens to e.g. 3.5 meters. For closer, simply blindly turn a bit to one side, for further turn to the other side. Have I, and my photography friends, been doing zone work for at least half a century without knowing this?
I like what you said about having “Leica Money”, but not wanting to spend your money on a Leica. A camera is a tool to use and abuse. I agree, you don’t want to have to baby your gear. Keep the videos coming! Always learning something from you. I’ve added some Canon P’s to my eBay watchlist! 👍🏽📷🔥🔥🔥👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💪🏽
Just ordered the Canon P with the 50mm f/1.4 lens (aka the “Japanese Summilux) based on your video and some other research! Looks like an excellent daily carry/travel camera. Looking forward to hearing about your experience with the camera. 📷👍🏽
Both those issues with your Canon 7 can be easily resolved (I think) with some adjustments you can do as explained in this Canon P maintenance video czcams.com/video/CShHW9ytZX4/video.html
I would never buy from Japan again. I bought a YASHICA ELECTRO 35 GTN. It looked amazing. Then I notices it had fungus on the lens focusing was stiff almost impossible to change the light meter and it had a light leak. I not only paid for the camera but I think it was another £30 import tax. The seller wanted the camera back and took me two week to get him to pay for the return postage. I eventually got my money back!
Congrats! You should get the 50mm Canon 1.4. It looks beautiful on the 7. By the way, when buying camera stuff from Japan, I learned that "Mint" is a relative thing 😊
I just bought a rangefinder camera but i didn't find the middle patch for focusing, is that mean my camera broken? Because i saw a lot video about rangefinder and they had the middle patch, its my first time using a rangefinder tho, damn i really need help 💀😅
Nice man. I see these often around here for not much money. I almost got one as a daily abuser but went with the Bessa R2A as my absuer instead. I definitely agree. When I have my Leica around my neck I am more careful and mindful of it. When I have my Bessa or AE1 on me I throw that shit around like whatever and thats just more relaxing.
Great camera. Hope you dont take this the wrong way, but just give it time. I see a Leica in your future. Ive done the same thing and went through all the motions of hate, acceptance and defeat. I just did the dance and it all came full circle :)
@@ribsy I feel ya, but somehow covering up the red dot does help mentally :) Good to see a New Yorker living in London. I use to live there myself. Highly recommend a riverside walk from the Isle of Dogs through Canary Wharf and head through Limehouse Basin and up river. Lots of good pockets to shoot. Cheers!
The Canon P is 98% of a Leica except minus that stupid film loading the Leica’s love to use… Plus you can walk around Mexico City with a P and not worry about getting your head bashed in for it.
Nice camera brother! Through away the case!…unless you like it! Haha! These cameras as old as there are can and will just die! Luckily there are more out there and now with the price gouging, they will cost you an arm and a leg! Great looking cameras bro!
Ribsy, what you're talking about doesn't make any sense to me in terms of why you bought your Canon P rangefinder. Yes, I get that the cold shoe on the P is an advantage for you, that's very concrete. But you went into detail saying how the rangefinder on your Canon 7 wasn't calibrated correctly, yet it was straightforward to have it fixed. Then you were describing the shutter issues with your Canon 7, essentially shutter capping at the fastest shutter speeds. THis is something a simple CLA should be able to fix. In fact, a simple CLA should be enough to both calibrate the rangefinder and fix your shutter capping issues. They way you were describing the issues with the Canon 7, you made it sound like it's now a piece of junk and totally disposable. Wrong! I sincerely hope that you'll spend to get your Canon 7 the service it needs instead of just dropping it because of your new, fancy Canon P.
hey - i think you are reading too much into it. ive always wanted a canon p, and now i have several excuses to help me justify buying it. i like them all 😊
The trick to mounting Leica Thread Mount lenses is to set the lens on its minimum focusing distance. This retracts the rear focusing cam on the lens and it won't collide with the camera's internal rangefinder coupling arm. You can now easily align the lens to the mount. It will take more time when changing lenses but I find it helpful because it also prevents damage to the rangefinder coupling arm.
oh great! thanks for the tip - def gonna keep that in mind
Turn it clockwise first before you turn counter-clockwise.
Thanks for the info! Def gonna be doing this myself

Probably others have already mentioned it but both the shutter speed issue and the rangefinder misalignment can be addressed with adjustment screws on the underside of the camera (You need to remove the bottom plate). Japan Vintage Camera describes the method while walking through either the P or the 7, I forget which but I would guess its a similar adjustment in both cases.
yea for sure! i will prob be doing so for both soon!

Yea they are great cameras
The p’s have been flying under the Radar for a while , but it seems people are discovering them now, they are a solid camera and good looking camera, I have a 35mm f2 canon serenar lens , which is a beautiful looking and designed lens , it looks stunning with the p , very high class vintage , not to mention its very compact , together they will fit in a decent size jacket pocket , these mechanical cameras will out it last us all.. for a couple of hundred , you are getting a lot of bang for your bucks…
Def a solid camera!
Oh yea that’s gonna be fun! Enjoy
That's a slick looking PSG jersey. Those cameras are gems too.
Haha yea - PSG Jersey fly
I have a Canon P which has problems similar to your 7, and also sometimes gives completely black frames. I enquired about getting it CLAed, and the quote I got was more than the value of the camera. Perhaps I should go looking for a repair shop with a lower fee...
One thing I noticed with the P is that it has a tendency to tilt forward when hanging from a strap. Something that the extra height of the 7 would actually help with perhaps?
ahh yea seems like an issue with many of these cameras. i will def get mine cla'd
Apart from that its basically the same cameras
yea they are very similar
I used to have Canon P but eventually I decided to just buy a Leica. I bought a Leica for my use and for investment as well..It can be both. But if I'm going to own a camera for the rest of my life then it will be a Leica.
I mean they both the same tool that can take great pictures, but you'll appreciate nicer built quality and it's more comfortable to use. my Leica is actually simpler machine but that's what makes it so great.
To each their own! Can’t go wrong with a Leica
Yea I’m curious about the 50
Happy to see those pictures from Valencia! Awesome shots of our longboards there 2:00. Stoked for your new Camera!
Yea! Unfortunately the camera wasn’t cooperating lol
Yea it’s super simple! Has everything I neee
Interesting info
You can buy (if you can find one) a bracket with a cold shoe for your canon 7. I purchased one a couple of years ago from Roberts Cameras - not cheap but it works and looks OK - the 7s has the built in cold shoe and looks much better then a bracket on my 7
na i don't like bracket. i think its ugly lol
I had the same opinion about owning a Leica, I used to have a M3 but I never took it out, I eventually sold it to pay off my car. Now I definitely want a Canon 7 to replace it because there is nothing like the feeling of the build quality of these old rangefinders. I do have a canon canonet QL17 in perfect condition but it feels so cheap compared to something like the M3 and I assume the Canon 7 or P.
yea these old rangefinders are simply amazing
I have a brassed, black paint Canon P and paired with a Voigtlander 35 2.5 it’s my main 35mm, goes everywhere with me. Solid camera and I like the look and features way better than the C7 (never liked the meter). The only thing I don’t like is using the 35 frame lines while wearing glasses.
How are you liking that lens? I was thinking about getting one for my canon P as well
interesting. frame lines look cool but i won't really be using that much. shooting from the hip often haha
@@ribsy then fire away! And thanks for the interesting content, you’re putting out a lot of worthwhile videos these days!
Definitely a cold shoe and not a hot shoe (no hot shoe pin) . Funny enough that I was looking for a cold shoe rangefinder for one of my Baldalux 6x9 folder. That Canon P is tempting
Haha dangerously intriguing camera
i wanted to follow up on the Canon P rangefinder-which is a remarkable 35mm rangefinder.
Thanks for the info! Very interesting
The P is my fave rangefinder. I've had the 7s and prefer the P to that one because the P is smoother in every function, the viewfinder is brighter, focus patch sharper. Of course the meter on the 7's don't work, too old. I loved the review, thanks for posting.
Good to know! Makes me happy about my
Purchase
when your fast shutter speeds do that its called 'capping'
ahh cool. thanks 😊
Yea I can imagine these canon P when they were new!
Love your narration style - one of the best. Please keep going.
Much appreciated 😀
The rear element of your J-12 is rubbing on the internal frame of your P. That’s why the focus is harder to turn. Not recommended to use that lens on the P, works fine on the 7.
I don't think that is the case. especially since my rear element isn't scratched or anything
The P has a x1 viewfinder. I can shoot with both eyes open.
It has a cleaner look without the knobs on the top and meter on the front.
Historically the P was the Populaire (budget) vs the VL and VT.
Canon 7 came after the P and could mount the 50mm f/0.95 monster lens.
ahh ok intersting - the 7 feels older to me for some reason
I love my Canon P. It feels great in the hand. I will say make sure that the rangefinder window isn't loose. I used some clear nailpolish to keep it in place. Love the videos. Can't wait to see the photos you get with it.
hmm thats interesting - mine is all good, fortunately
Mate just a thought, your canon 7 might be experiencing shutter issues because you are using the Jupiter 12 on it. The rear might be in contact with the metal foil canon uses for its releases.
Hmmm I don’t think so. That’s only a problem on the P as far as I am aware
Good luck with the new camera.
thanks! gonna look into the voigtlander option
Love the Canon P.
Yea it’s great!
I love my Canon P. The design of the rewind crank is a beautiful touch. Also have the 7, mostly to use it with the Canon 50mm f/0.95. Both fantastic cameras.
yea the rewind crank is def interesting. i like that i have both - will keep em forever!
Yea def! Those cameras are super sought after
Hello Ribsy, This is Alex from San Francisco, and I also have the Canon 7, and a Canon Vt, as I see the Big Difference when you had them together as the RF window is not ALING as the P is a short base RF in which the 7, and the 7S is a log base RF window just like the Leica M series line.

Ribsy, congrats on the Canon P, I'm sure that you'll enjoy it after a nice CLA. I've been enjoying mine for 3 1/2 years already and it's a pleasure to shoot. There are some nice Canon LTM lenses and other brand lenses available as well...
Yea I def want to look at other lenses
Sooner or later, you'll end up with a Leica. Just accept that fact now and you'll be grateful you took the shortcut. It's basically impossible to resist scratching the itch if you enjoy the rangefinder experience.
Sincerely,
A former anti-Leica photographer
fake news 😂
@@ribsy looking forward to your Leica first impressions video in a few months titled “I GAVE IN - DOES IT LIVE UP TO THE HYPE?”
You’re welcome for the catchy title 😎
Just saw on ig a repainted canon p on a lovely white with red lettering even the lens was repainted white and I just fell in love
yea seen a few repainted ones - seems like the thing to do
Nice Canon P! I shot my first roll of New Classic EZ400 on my Nikon S2. It is now clear to me that I need to shoot the next roll on my Canon VI-T. I'll post some pics from that roll soon as I do 'em! Thanks for all the great vids and tips. Have fun with your new camera! (I'm a little jelly.)
haha thanks for the support. enjoy!
I have the Canon P too. It was one of my first film cameras. I love it!!! Been enjoying your vids.
Oh niceeee - good company!
Cheers.
Yea def! The sellers do well
Not to be pedantic but the 7 was the upgrade, not the P. It introduced the light meter and included selectable framelines. There’s also the extra bayonet mount for the gimmicky 50/0.95 lens. The P was the budget option introduced 3 years earlier. Canon made great LTM rangefinders.
yea all good. someone else pointed it out. makes sense but the 7 for some reason feels like it is the lesser version (if you ignore the light meter)
Hi
Stick with the M the P as an horrible viewfinder very small
The Canon 7 selenium meter window is pretty ugly. The Canon 7s looks so much better.
im torn. i think i like the 7 more on the right side. but i really don't like the lightmeter. ruins the look for me
hmmmm won't make too much difference for me
totally agree, the rest of the camera i really like
Highly recommend the 50mm f1.2 ltm with this camera. One stop shy of the Canon Dream lens at a fraction of the costs.
good call! i've def considered it
I already had a Canon P but it is having some issues. But i also have just recently bought a Canon 7. I love these old rangefinder camera's they feel indestructible.
Yea they really do. Such dense beautiful cameras
Yea exactly! That’s what I was assuming
There are tons out there. I think the prices will hold tight for a while … hopefully
Got my canon P with an old canon 50mm 1.4 (1959 I think) - great combo - output very similar to leica equivalents…. As you say shopping from Japan is fine if you read the reviews of sellers and ignore the fact that almost everything is classed as Mint (+++++)
haha yup, ++++++

I have the Canon 7s(z) and it shot really well the first dozen rolls. However, my last roll with B&W and shot at the fast 1/1000 shutter speeds had the same issue you just showed. Had it fixed, and i'm about to develop the first roll since repair. Hope it's fixed!
Oh nice! I’ll prob get it repaired soon
Nice, I like the feel and use of the Canon p way more then the 7. More dense, still a bright finder, just nice. Hope you have fun with it!
agreed! it really feel like a more approachable package
@@ribsy totally.
Definitely have one of these on my wishlist
For sure! Get it!
I'd get a CLA on the P before trying to service the shutter on your 7.
yea def! planning on CLA for both
Would recommend this for someone who does portrait shoots? I shoot minolta now but I’m really in a debate between the canon 7, canon P and Nikon F3. Your canon 7 and canon P videos are drawing me this way.
Prob not ideal for portraits but it can def work
As usual, thanks!
Yea there is always a risk but japan hasn’t been terrible
“I gots Leica money” :) I have a black Canon P, and when comparing the Canon P to the Leica they say Save yourself a G and just get the P
lol
Gran video hermano, espero atento el full review de esta joya

I like what you said about having “Leica Money”, but not wanting to spend your money on a Leica. A camera is a tool to use and abuse. I agree, you don’t want to have to baby your gear. Keep the videos coming! Always learning something from you. I’ve added some Canon P’s to my eBay watchlist! 👍🏽📷🔥🔥🔥👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💪🏽
if you gon spend it, at least use the damn thing! haha

Definitely a nice camera! But you have to get that Leica ;-)
LOLOL you are a bad influence

Both those issues with your Canon 7 can be easily resolved (I think) with some adjustments you can do as explained in this Canon P maintenance video czcams.com/video/CShHW9ytZX4/video.html
Thanks! I’ll check this out
Can you use the industar 35mm f2.8 (I think it's the Industar 11), with these cameras? Some people say you can't because of the focus system....
Never tried. I only have the Jupiter
@@ribsy either way, thank very much!
Is the rewind crank missing?
Nope it’s there. It’s meant to be flush in the camera body
Yup there is always a risk, compared to seeing the camera in person
Congrats! You should get the 50mm Canon 1.4. It looks beautiful on the 7. By the way, when buying camera stuff from Japan, I learned that "Mint" is a relative thing 😊
Yuuuuuup. My "everything has been tested and works" Canon P has been in the shop since I got it in May because the shutter won't open above 1/60.

hahah yup ... mint ++++
hahaha exactly, not surprised

hmmm thats weird, not sure
Excuse me, where do you buy it?
ebay, from japan
Hey man you mentioned buying cameras from Japan. How did the shipping and import costs work out having it sent to the UK? Thanks
Shipping was fine - haven’t been charged import yet but I assume a bill will come soon
Hello, do they charge money on the aduana?
Thanks.

Yes
Haha yea - I need a beater. I’m not the most kind to cameras
Great camera. Hope you dont take this the wrong way, but just give it time. I see a Leica in your future. Ive done the same thing and went through all the motions of hate, acceptance and defeat. I just did the dance and it all came full circle :)
LOL no taking it the wrong way at all. i really want an M4 or M-A, but i just don't that expensive chain around my neck lol

Man, you're pretty 😆 but when talking about a particular camera, just move it closer to us, to allow examine it in details.
thanks for the compliment
Your 7 needs a CLA
Correct
