Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view!"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"

I really love this series, but truthfully the accents are so strong I only understand about half of the dialogue. The closed captions don't understand either. The translation is hilarious and doesn't make sense.

Now some "club" owner's brother kills himself in Liverpool. Liverpool city and borough has about 470,000 people while the metropolitan area totals 1.4 Million. To think some brother of some "club" owner is going to have the city streets lined with onlookers as his funeral passes is Ridiculous. If you've ever lived in a city/metro area that size people are NOT going to know who the hell the kid was - much less dress up for a street view passing - dressed in Black of all things in the rain. That's just writing by a production team that is thinking more of a tiny town or village - - not a metropolitan city.

The characters in this series trace their roots to two cousins who left Ireland and migrated to Liverpool from where two big families were decended. The Callaghans were descened from one, and the family of the club owner from the other. So they are familiar and know each other well. It isn't a surprise that the friends and kin of the two families are many and all turned up at the funneral. As the other cop said, "Big city, small town."
