  • In this video, I rebuild the weak starter out of my 1995 Sea Doo XP 800. Rebuilding the starter out of your SeaDoo is a inexpensive way to extend the life of a worn starter. If you have a Sea Doo 787 starter that needs rebuilding follow me on this journey as I show you what steps I took in order to rebuild it. If you would like to see more DIY Sea Doo videos make sure to click that like button. I treat like as votes on which subjects to do more videos on.
    Note: Make sure to add a small amount of grease to the very end of the armature shaft on reassembly. I forgot to show this in the video.

    Thank you SO MUCH for these DIY videos. I ordered a rebuilt starter for my 1997 Sea Doo gtx, but will rebuild the old one to keep it for when this one dies.

    Great video, however, does anyone have any close up shots of what the brushes should look like when properly installed? I opened mine up and everything fell all over the place, and I can't really seem to figure out how the brushes are supposed to sit based on this video

    Great video! Well done. Personally I would've replaced the bearing too unless I was just selling it to someone I didn't like. As with the brushes, it is a wear item that has given you 20+ years of service. And you don't want to go cussing those brushes again anytime soon. All the best!

      Bearing gets used a few seconds each start. Highly unlikely to ever have a bearing wear out in a starter, not worth the trouble to replace on this when you can buy a whole starter for $50. Brushes will wear out though, so if the kit isn't that much it could be worth replacing those.

      No point to replace the bearing they should last 100yr

      @@ripptydevibes2581 It's a personal choice. I tend to do a lot of "while you're in there" stuff because nothing man made lasts 100 years anymore. Except nuke waste.

    I have gone through 3 aftermarket starters so Im going to buy an old OEM one, then Rebuild it to get the reliability I want for my Seadoo.

    Cleaning the Commutator with Meguiar's Abrasive compound with an applicator pad is the best way to remove staining, it also gets more even coverage

      You can put it in a 1/2" drill and polish it really nice. When you're done polishing the copper, use and exacto knife to clean out the spaces between each copper segment, cause they get filled with brush debris

    Does the rebuild kit come with a new post for the ground cable to the battery? Mine was rusted completely and only way to remove it was to cut the post with a hacksaw. I have another OEM starter I put on but didn’t know if I could rebuild the bad one for a back up. Thanks.

    Hi Dan,
    I have a '96 Seadoo XP that I rebuilt the starter for, I replaced the brushes the bearings and cleaned it just like in your video.
    It worked great for a while, but now the starter just spins and doesn't want to engage the flywheel. I didn't do anything to the bendix end of the starter, as it seemed to work okay when I had it out of the Seadoo. What I noticed is that if I connect the starter to a battery charger and set it to "boost" (50 amp), the starter spins, and the clutch assembly spins out like it would to engage the flywheel, but then returns back to the normal position that it would be in when not spinning (the spring pushes it back down the shaft).
    Do you know, could it just be the bendix is gummed up with rust or grease that is preventing the bendix/clutch from staying engaged with the flywheel, or is there something more to it? My Seadoo has been sitting for three years now, with a new engine in it, I really want to get it back on the water soon, I'm missing all the fun this summer. lol
    Thanks!!!

      It sounds like bendix problem to me. Replace the bendix and report back. Good luck!

    I have on my bench right now two two Sea Doo starters, one spins no longer throws itself forward, the other one spins and throws itself forward. How ever the round circle mount is clocked totally different on the donor starter then the original? can i switch the clocking on the good stater and use it? or should I just use the good parts?

    My throw out bearing not throwing out. It just spin fast. My nephew was helping me to tune my ski and somehow melted the rubber seal around positive. I fix it but now it spin fast but doesn't throw out the cog any ideas Cheers Graham

    Question Dan, I have a 1998 seadoo gsx limited with a 951. For the past month it's given me a low voltage Warning even after I put a new battery in it. I decided to install a second new battery to day and when I went to go turn it over it would just turn over one time and not start the engine. I tried this 3 or 4 times and then the starter started smoking. Do you think that the starter could be was giving me that 12 V low signal or do you think its the starter as well as may be the stator or the voltage Regulator?

    • @DIYDanCars
      @DIYDanCars  Před 4 lety

      I think you have a bad voltage regulator. I believe in 1998 Sea Doo did something really stupid and put the voltage regulator internal with the MPEM so when they go bad the MPEM has to be replaced. I think there is an aftermarket company that will allow you to retrofit an external voltage regulator to your MPEM. Good luck and you should probably replace the starter if it was "smoking",

    Did you use a gasket when reattaching the starter to the motor? Or just use the O-ring

    • @DIYDanCars
      @DIYDanCars  Před 5 lety +1

      There is no gasket, only a o-ring.

    How did you get the bendix off?

    • @painlesstom
      @painlesstom Před 4 lety +1

      He didn't remove it in this video. But there is a collar on the shaft in front of the bendix / gear that you push down to compress the spring, then you'll see a spring clip that must be removed. Then the collar will slide off along with the spring and bendix assembly.
