  • Srikant, who lives in Pune, India, asks, "I understand that all living things have an underlying consciousness. These living things are made up of billions of living cells. Do all these cells have their own consciousness? If so, is the consciousness we experience the result of their combined consciousness?" Q&A series #23
Advaita Vedanta says that consciousness is formless and limitless, pervading the universe and present in everything, including animals, insects, plants, cells, and even rocks. If that's so, are cells conscious beings? Are rocks?
All the cells in your body, including the neurons in your brain, are physical things. Each has a particular shape, size, location, and so on. But what about your thoughts, emotions, and sensations? They have no size, weight, or location because they're not physical things. They're non-physical things, mental things. Those non-physical, mental objects were described by the rishis of ancient India as being sukshma or subtle, that is, not a perceptible material or substance.
There's a CPU inside the device you're using right now to watch this video. When the CPU retrieves the particular data that represents my image or the sound of my voice, it displays the image for you to see, and plays the sound for you to hear. But, the CPU doesn't see me or hear me like you do. The CPU has no thoughts, emotions, or perceptions; it only has data, ones and zeros, binary information. You, on the other hand, have a powerful mind in which the my image and sound of my voice are experienced by you right now. When those images and sounds arise in your in your mind, they become known to you. You become conscious or aware of them because, fundamentally speaking, you are a sentient conscious being, a conscious being who knows or observes all the activities of your mind.
The ancient rishis discovered that a single, undivided, limitless consciousness is simultaneously present in every living being, becoming manifest or reflected in the minds of those beings. So, consciousness is present everywhere, all the time, including in animals, insects, plants and cells. For this reason, consciousness is equally present in you and in an amoeba. What makes you so different is the fact that you have a complex, powerful mind, and the amoeba doesn’t.

Contemporary philosophers must work hand in hand with eastern philosophers like advaita vedantins to solve the hard problem of consciousness. I thank all the Gurus from advaita vedanta for answering all the questions I had pondered about for the last 20 years and for giving me a wake up call on the matters of my real nature...... I now enjoy all the experiences with no struggle and without losing sleep over this illusory world.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

There is nothing in the universe that is not conscious. There is one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively through every particle that exists, seen or unseen.

Everything that is is made of consciousness, so even stones and nails have consciousness because everything is consciousness. A stone is conscious of it's stone-ness. Everything is conscious of it's own being.

1001.Existence [sat] itself shines as consciousness [chit].
Therefore, until the mind [chittam] is completely
extinguished and [thereby] becomes the absolute
existence-consciousness [kevala sat-chit], it is impossible
for the petty mind, which is a false imagination
[kalpana], a reflection of consciousness [chit-abhasa],
to see the reality, which is the non-dual supreme
    consciousness.
1002. Only till the sun appears on the eastern horizon, will
the self-conceit of that moon [shine proudly] in this
world. [Likewise] only till the knowledge which is of
the nature of consciousness [chinmaya-unarvu i.e.
    Self-knowledge] appears, destroying the delusive
knowledge, the ego, will the self-conceit of the jiva’s
    knowledge [shine proudly]. Know thus.
1003. In the front of the great sun, the Self - [which ever
shines] in the Heart, the sky of consciousness [chitakasa],
without rising and setting - the mind of the
Atma-jnani is, in the vast world, like the moon seen in
    broad daylight.
1004. Know that the mind which illumines the illusory world
is [a mere reflected light] like the glittering mirrorlight,
    reflecting the bright sunlight.

When the self is seen as a blessing,
The world opens up its illusive dressing,
      Opening within our real relation,
Of pure consciousness in one elation.
To see the self within everything,
this is thee equality of creation,
I so agree, the self existent, the shining orb of ONE.....🙏🕊️🙏

Everything is consciousness, including sound, smell, and your thoughts, encompassing both what you have known and what remains unknown to you.. It's not that they possess consciousness; rather, they are manifestations of consciousness itself. Perhaps we should use a different term to describe it, as the word "consciousness" implies awareness., if you think this statement from human ego centric you will not actually understand the truth. In the state of oneness, you and a piece of rock are not fundamentally different.

    • @yerpderp6800
      @yerpderp6800 Před 6 měsíci

Consciousness implies INTELLIGENT awareness. Awareness is not the same thing as intelligent awareness. Every-thing is a manifestation of awareness, not every-thing demonstrates intelligent behavior. That is the difference between one thing that is intelligent and one thing that is not such as a rock. This is what folks refer to as "is this conscious", aka is the object (manifestation of awareness) acting in a manner that implies having intelligence. What is considered intelligent and not intelligent is another story (it's essentially human ego centric, that some-thing is intelligent because it can act like me), my point is that you're misunderstanding the words (like most folks too). The hard problem of consciousness is effectively asking the conditions necessary for some-thing to be conscious (aka how does an intelligent manifestation of awareness arise). This is still valid in Advaita Vedanta because awareness is preserved, what has changed is the recognition of some-thing as being conscious when before it wasn't.
^I should mention that this only works in the system of duality, aka delusion. If you're working in philosophy/science then you must by default assume certain things, one of which is that there are some consistent laws which dictate a system's behavior (permanently or temporarily). In oneness, there are no distinctions and so consciousness is said to come to a rest (for intelligence is based on division/dividing experience).

Can you please define what is a Mind? And why mix religion with modern scientific neurology and philosophy? Science deals with physical and other verifiable things like energy. Religion mostly deals with superstition.
I know computers more than anything else - i'm not convinced with his analogy of the CPU and human brain. A CPU is just an specialized chip integrated with more general features and circuits than the rest of chips. Controllers are simplified CPUs, too.
Computer components depend on Electromagnetic energy to operate. The reason a software can operate a dumb hardware is: bcs all computer hardware contain microscopic circuits, transistors (switch or amplify), Diodes, capacitors etc that can interact with software in the quantum level (nano-technolgy). And all software is made of EM energy. These are welknown facts and cannot be compared to human brain which is mostly still a mystery.
Yes, Pan-Psychism makes some sense but it's coined by Scientists, however it doesn't address the spiritual realm. I think consciousness is just the same as the spiritual realm, which is basically a universal non-physical energy that all physical brains interact with, and after death it retains some worldly events like the "Life Review" etc.
Please define what a Mind is? Thanks all
