    And this once again shows me why I love my Sunbeams. Glassy, not too zingy highs, very articulate mids, and a nice growly bottom. The new Pure Blues come in second for me. Just my .02$.

    Just bought a new bass and was deciding on the strings I wanted to put on it. This demo was an. OUTSTANDING resource in the decision making process. Thanks for doing it.

    This was one of the best string comparison videos I've ever seen/heard really and I'm now convinced that nickel can sound like stainless!!!!!
    Hi beams are also my favorite, but I dare say I'll probably record anything in the future with the Pure Beams instead for the slight added warmth they offer.
    Seriously, this was a killer comparison, thank you very much.

    Great and very useful review/test. 3 good sets of bass strings, with their own merits. HiBeams seem best for slap, Sunbeams for fingerstyle. PureBlues for chords, harmonics, solo melody. I can see why Victor loves these. Maybe PureBlues are the most versatile aswell.

    Just goes to show, tone is in the fingers. I've played Pure Blue and now have Sunbeams...but those Hi Beams have a clarity and depth that the other sets don't. Frankly I'm surprised that the Hi Beams are as versatileas they are.

    That's a pretty subtle difference, and the feel difference is pretty large for me so I always go with nickel these days. Light gauge Sunbeams are a favorite.

    I like the Pure Blues for most of them, but The Hi-Beams and Sunbeams both sounded fatter and more solid with a pick, and I liked the Sunbeams the best for the harmonics.

    The Sunbeams really shine for fingerstyle. It sounded as if the bass had been boosted compared to the Hi Beams which sounded quite dull I thought (other than their slap tone)

    I love the Lo-Rider strings because of the tension on my 34" scale 5 string Basses plus my right hand technique is improved because my fingers don't dig in so much and actually pull the string. For years I would not own a 34" scale 5 because I could not stand the floppy B string until I found these strings, now I own 3. if you want a nice "B" this is your string, not to mention how smooth these strings feel....

    Hi-beams sounded the best. The Sunbeams were nice too but had the broken in sound right out of the box. The PBs didn’t do much for me. They lacked depth to the notes and weren’t even as bright as the HBs.

    I’ve come to think you could string a stingray with shoelaces and it would still sound like a stingray. I have flatwounds on one of mine and it still has that zingy sound of a stingray.

    Great comparison! I know this an older video, but I'm looking to get some new strings in a week or 2. I have DR Nickel Lo-Riders right now, and while I like them, I'm looking for something a bit fatter while staying in the roundwound realm.

    Hello! Thanks for video! I have ASH body Jazz Bass with default stock strings. This combination gives a lot of high notes in my opinion. And also it hurts to my fingers. I need a little bit "darker & softer" sound. Which strings do you recommend me to try? Is Sunbeams or Pure Blues better suited for my tasks?

    • @emrehanli
      @emrehanli Před 3 lety

      What do you mean by stock strings? Is you bass new? You've never changed strings on it? Usually the strings that a bass has on in a store are pretty messed up because of all the demoing. I wouldn't expect them to be bright at all. Strings that old can't keep all the higher harmonic content. Did you try twisting the tone knob? It should make your sound pretty dark.

    What type of strings are better for slapping? Nickel or Steel?

    • @Silent_Stillness
      @Silent_Stillness Před 7 lety

      it's a complex question. If you want the most modern tone with the most clear and present harmonics it's stainless steel, but as he said it comes at the cost of comfort, which turns out to be a huge factor. In addition to this you might decide that you don't want a slap sound that is THAT modern, so ultimately it comes down to you. In my personal experience there's no way I'm stringing my bass with a stainless steel string ever again, the strings would grip against my fingers where nickel feels so smooth and comfortable. I use DR Lo Rider Nickel coated stainless steel strings. Another factor in favor of Nickel is the fact that it greatly diminishes the wear on your frets.

    • @bak1386
      @bak1386 Před 6 lety

      I'd go with nickel, the comfort alone out weighs anything the steel strings offer. The sound difference is minute really, but u can't go wrong with nickel. Whereas u could buy the steel and decide the different feel and potential discomfort isn't worth it. Then u are out that 20 or 30 bucks. Just my opinion

  • @fretlessman71
    @fretlessman71 Před 9 lety

    Aaugh! I must be the only person on the planet who uses 35-55-75-95-120. Not a single one of those gauges are available in these strings.....

    • @bolttracks
      @bolttracks Před 9 lety

      That's cause 95-35 is a gauge you rarely get from string manufacturers anywhere. DR are one of the few who offer these for their 4 string sets. With a feel like nickels you should be fine with the 40s tho ;)
