That is so GREAT to hear Keziah! Thanks for watching and let us know if you have any more questions about showing your chickens.
@@BarSZRanch I do have a question, what breeds are the "best" for showing? Or what breeds do you suggest?
@@BarSZRanch do you have to debeak chickens to show them
@@troykasey4661 Please check the rules and regulations of any show you go to. We would be disqualified if any of our chickens were debeaked. It is possible that it may be legal in a different state.
Thank you 4:58

Thank you so much, this is going to help me a lot!! Im doing Poultry next year and im wondering how many chickens do I need???
any tips for a 5 year old showing peewee with a Rhode island red? her hand is not big enough to hold the bird.
Showing poultry is a lot of fun, but sometimes the classes in the shows take a long time to judge. We use bantam birds for showmanship! Many standard breeds come in bantam sizes - bantams can be quite a bit smaller than a standard size breed. Rhode Island Reds do come in the bantam size. The males are a little over two pounds when fully mature, and the females are just under two pounds! This smaller size of bird would be better for a 5 year old to hold. Good luck showing!
I’m entering chickens into my county fair for the first time. I’ve done rabbits in the past but this is my first year doing chickens
Howdy, Charlotte! That is so exciting! Let us know if you have any questions a how the competition goes.
I’m doing poetry
Hi, I’m trying to show my seroma, and my mom has been also wanting me to so I’m gonna watch this a couple times I really hope I am able to show my chicken and I really hope this helps! I will. See if it does
Good luck and let us know how it goes!
So cool! How does the judging work? Do you get a letter grade, or a single score out of 100, or multiple scores in different categories? And then is there a blue ribbon for the winner? It would be really neat to attend a competition and see it in person....
Hi Jen, There is a standardized score card where points are given in different categories. The participant with the most points wins! Ribbons are usually a part of the competition, trophies and belt buckles can also be awarded for overall winners, etc. Each show is a little different, however the exact way of judging and awards to be given are usually listed on the website or in a premium book so you can have all of that information before the show starts. Let us know if you have any more questions and thanks for watching!
I've never done show this helps so much I'm 11 and do you know some of the best types of chickens for show? And how do the chickens stay still?
Any breed of Chicken can be very fun to show. As with most animal species, different breeds of chickens have different and unique personalities. We recommend talking with a hatchery, or doing some internet research, and pick a breed (or a few breeds) of chickens that will thrive in your particular climate and that usually display a calm temperament. We love to show bantam chickens, but they can be more high strung at times than larger chickens. The more time you spend holding your chickens, the calmer they become. We work regularly with our chickens to ensure they stand still or sit still in our hands at a show!
I don't think I ever knew chickens had ear lobes--or where they were! And your birds are SO patient! How do you get your bird to stay posed? Whoops! Steve was tired of walking with a stick! Hope that doesn't happen at the 4-H show! You guys are awesome! Good job!
Bribing the chickens with tasty treats usually helps them like hanging out with us. We buy LOTS of mealworms!
Does the judge normally give you prompting or do you just move through this set of motions automatically?
Where did you get the silver spangled hamburg?
Hi, Haley! The Hamburg’s name is firefly and she came from the county fair. Kailey paid five dollars in quarters and dimes to buy her a few years ago.
THANKS FOR WATCHING!

Is the beginning showing what you show a judge, or what you inspect before the show?
How would you hold a very large rooster I have a partridge brahma. He is about 13 lbs.im wanting to start showing him
Hi Keri, all chickens are held the same regardless of their size:) the breast of the bird is held in the palm of your hand, the birds head faces your forearm. The birds legs are placed between your pointer and pinky fingers, with your two middle fingers supporting the breast of the bird. Showing chickens is very fun, but can be a workout for your arm, especially if you choose to show a larger bird! Let us know if you have any more questions and thanks for watching!
Should we keep our hen or rooster seperate from the rest of the flock if we plan to show them?
Hi! I might join 4-H, and I have a quick question. Does the presentation have a lot of people in the crowd? I’m a little scared about that
where can i buy a poultry showmanship stick
Howdy, Judy! You can use any retractable presentation pointer. We usually go to a hardware store. Ace Hardware or Home Depot will carry the retractable sticks (ours have magnets on them). Any option like these is just fine. Thanks for watching!
How do you pose an Araucana?
Great question, Heather! When showing a chicken in showmanship, all breeds of chickens are posed pretty much the same way. It is important to work with your show chicken so that they stand quietly for a few seconds once you set them up and pose them.
Do you have to have your chickens vaccinated to show them? Pretty birds!
How many birds can you take to the show?
You will need to check the exhibitor guide to your specific fair to be sure but typically you can take as many birds to be cage judged as you would like, and you can only show one.
@@BarSZRanch thank you! It’s my first year showing.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
omg y is your roster/hen soo respectful
Do you have to be a kid to show chickens?
