    any tips for a 5 year old showing peewee with a Rhode island red? her hand is not big enough to hold the bird.

    • @BarSZRanch
      @BarSZRanch  Před 2 lety +1

      Showing poultry is a lot of fun, but sometimes the classes in the shows take a long time to judge. We use bantam birds for showmanship! Many standard breeds come in bantam sizes - bantams can be quite a bit smaller than a standard size breed. Rhode Island Reds do come in the bantam size. The males are a little over two pounds when fully mature, and the females are just under two pounds! This smaller size of bird would be better for a 5 year old to hold. Good luck showing!

    So cool! How does the judging work? Do you get a letter grade, or a single score out of 100, or multiple scores in different categories? And then is there a blue ribbon for the winner? It would be really neat to attend a competition and see it in person....

    • @BarSZRanch
      @BarSZRanch  Před 3 lety

      Hi Jen, There is a standardized score card where points are given in different categories. The participant with the most points wins! Ribbons are usually a part of the competition, trophies and belt buckles can also be awarded for overall winners, etc. Each show is a little different, however the exact way of judging and awards to be given are usually listed on the website or in a premium book so you can have all of that information before the show starts. Let us know if you have any more questions and thanks for watching!

    I've never done show this helps so much I'm 11 and do you know some of the best types of chickens for show? And how do the chickens stay still?

    • @BarSZRanch
      @BarSZRanch  Před 2 lety

      Any breed of Chicken can be very fun to show. As with most animal species, different breeds of chickens have different and unique personalities. We recommend talking with a hatchery, or doing some internet research, and pick a breed (or a few breeds) of chickens that will thrive in your particular climate and that usually display a calm temperament. We love to show bantam chickens, but they can be more high strung at times than larger chickens. The more time you spend holding your chickens, the calmer they become. We work regularly with our chickens to ensure they stand still or sit still in our hands at a show!

    • @BarSZRanch
      @BarSZRanch  Před 3 lety +3

      Hi Keri, all chickens are held the same regardless of their size:) the breast of the bird is held in the palm of your hand, the birds head faces your forearm. The birds legs are placed between your pointer and pinky fingers, with your two middle fingers supporting the breast of the bird. Showing chickens is very fun, but can be a workout for your arm, especially if you choose to show a larger bird! Let us know if you have any more questions and thanks for watching!
