  • Foodie's Guide To Darwin - What to eat in 48hrs?!
    0:00 - Intro
    1:54 - Rendezvous Cafe
    6:21 - Seafood On Cullen
    11:43 - Parap Village Market (Mary's Laksa)
    22:56 - Kopi Stop
    29:36 - Chow, Taste of Southeast Asia
    This trip was most unexpected. Up till 3 days before departure, I was still destined for Perth. Border closures meant that I had to quickly cancel that trip and make alternative plans. On this day of travel, only states accessible to us in South Australia were Northern Territory and Tasmania. Elsewhere, we were either prohibited from entering without an exemption, or a 14 day quarantine hotel stay was required on return to Adelaide.
    So I decided to head up north to Darwin, where it was warm because late winter is particularly brutal down south with single digit temperatures. I have not been to Darwin in over 2 decades. So I was not sure what to expect. Besides fleeting peeps at documentaries about how multi-cultural it is, my recollection of time spent there is very blurry and vague. Thus, this was the perfect opportunity to revisit it.
    I view a destination through food, and that is how I begin to understand the fabric of what gels that place together. Follow me on this gastronomical journey and hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did filming it.

    Thanks for another very informative video. There are always some good tips to be gleaned. I am going to Darwin shortly, and I will be sure to check out some of these places. Kaya jam is a new one on me. I will have to try that egg, jam and toast combo. I tried Strawberry jam on toast with scrambled eggs in Hong Kong. I thought it would be putrid, but it was actually quite yummy!

      Yeah, sweet on savoury combo is something we scratch our head over.... But we do it all the time without realising it! Burger patty with onion chutney, chicken classic subway with sweet onion dressing.... Etc... 😏

    Best Thai: Hanuman’s or Nirvana’s. Best Seafood: Piwis Darwin. Best Indian: Inredible India on the Wharf or Palmerston. Best Japanese: Ichi’s in either Darwin City or Palmerston. You didn’t miss anything from missing Mindil Beach markets, which has become very touristy and cliche.

    You and I should travel together because I only travel for food! Such a pity about the tom yum. So very angmoh! YOu are right, I don't see why we don't eat more hot, spicy coup based dishes when it's cold. Instead, we eat it when it's hot out. Many in my family believe that the spiciness makes you sweat to cool you down. shrug haha

    • @ryansofly
      @ryansofly  Před 2 lety

      Omg I never understood this hot/cold fit the body. Had its roots in Chinese medicine, I think. Its a balance of some yin yang shit of maintaining equilibrium of your body temperature. Too much watermelon is no good because its too cooling for the body, will cause arthritis,... 🤷
