The Ducati 750ss remains today the very epitome of perfect aesthetic motorcycle design. It’s simply the most gorgeous bike ever made imho. I had the 900 ss Desmo Darmah in black and gold with the knee cut outs on the tank. Stunning bike.

Love my Guzzi. Solid list. For once all bikes I am familiar with. You usually find one that we just didn't get here. Put a bunch of miles on a '78 R100RS - quite a machine. I doubt most riders appreciate how much of a premium priced bike they were new, however.

When I was looking for a new bike, the local Ducati dealer let me test every model except the beautiful Mike Hailwood replica they had on the floor; bloody spoilsports. My heart still misses a beat when I look at the supersport; what a machine. The sound and the handling were just fantastic. I didn't end up buying one though; I just felt too cramped up on the bike. Gutted. The same dealer also carried Laverda and Moto Guzzi, you couldn't move in there without tripping overt brand new Jotas, Mirages and Le Mans; where's the nearest time machine, I want to go back! I ended up with a Yamaha XS eleven, (1.1), which in no way do I regret. Great programme.

Looking forward to getting one and stuffing my ultralight backpacking gear in the factory Krausers and touring the U.S. west coast SF to the Canada border and back. Camping wherever possible, and splurging for state park campsites for showers during the trip. The "Gentleman's Express" is the perfect bike for lightweight camping, coastal Cal/Oregon/Washington pavement-only touring.

I really liked your presentation and being a onetime owner of a 1975 Ducati gs as well a 1968,69 and 1971 Triumph Bonnevilles I appreciate your selection. Growing up in the 1960s and being in my twenties in the 1970s, I feel you left out an iconic Superbike of the early seventies. That is the Harley Davidson XLCH Sportster, here in the States the "CH" won many a impromptu drag race beating Bonnevilles as well as Norton Comandos. This of course depended on the skill of the riders, many times the Triumphs or Nortons would win. The point being is that the Sportster was still viewed as a Superbike at least till mid to late seventies.

I had a Mk1 Le Mans. It would skate round corners like it was on rails. Everything I know about electrics I learned from the Guzzi. It would fall off the sidestand if touched by a breeze. The Fuel filters and unions were soluable in petrol and the seat was only a piece of expanded foam. I rode to Portugal on it and hand to stand every 30mins to let some blood into my legs.. Spares, at that time, were a joke. I ordered throttle cables as a pair just to get 2 with the same free length. In the end I just could not live with its "Character". It was a joy to ride but a pain to own.

I learned never to leave home without a roll of isulating tape, spare fuses and a length or two of wire,,, I rewired it with Jap switches over my first winter. The original was just a mass of rotting black wire with coloured bands on the end to tell you what it did,,, Ah! The good old days ;o) Whenever I went through a tunnel I'd drop a cog and wind it up to listen to the music,,,

A lovely little video, although I have no experience of most of these. I rode quite a few of their cousins and siblings, but not the exact models featured here.
On the tall gearing of the 850 Lemon, you are quite right. But a tall first was a common feature of bikes with a track bias or designed with high-speed touring in mind. The lust for a low 0-60 time is a very "car" thing and is largely irrelevant on a motorcycle - unless you have a point to prove at a traffic light.
The joy of a tall first fear is that it is usable at rolling speeds. Perfect for a hairpin on a track. And as the Lemon was harder to stall than a Perkins diesel, the tall gearing was never an issue.
The BMW was a marvel. It was the first true 2-wheeled international GT. The strange bars made limited sense on a city, but they weren't designed for that.
    Excellent video. As usual. Chapeau.

I've owned two Le Mans, 1984 Le Mans MkIII and 1990 Le Mans MkV. The Mk in top gear was geared 30kph for 1000rpm. Eg, 4000rpm equated to 120kph. I wouldn't change into top gear until I hit 4000rpm. Le Mans engines liked to rev. At 6000rpm was when maximum torque came in. That equated to 180kph in top gear, where the engine felt like it would burst through brick walls. Incredibly strong. Redline was 7500rpm and maximum power at 7000rpm. Cruising speed between 150kph and 180kph.
First and top gears were tall, while 2nd, 3rd and 4th were closely spaced. City riding, I wouldn't get out of 3rd gear, occasionally 4th gear.

When it comes to big twins of the 1970s, I would happily take the Kawasaki Z750 parked next to the Ducati MHR. As a Guzzista, I would love to choose the LeMans Mark I, but my body no longer comfortably bends that way. There's an irony that I really love: in the 1970s my friends and relatives in Italy would go on and on about how the Japanese did not create anything, but copied everyone else, meanwhile both Laverda and Benelli went on to copy Honda. Slavishly in the case of the Benelli 350/4 and 500/4. Even the 750/6 has parts that interchange with the Honda 500 Four.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have owned three of the bikes featured…the First Incarnation of the LeMans 850 Guzzi, a BMW R100RS and a Ducati bevel drive 900 SS….the Guzzi was a lovely bike, uncompromising in cafe racer/road racer design. The same applies for the Ducati….just look at what the Japanese were producing at the same period, nothing to compare to those Italian Stallions…Likewise the Beemer was in a class of its own for built quality, reliability and just plain mile munching….l remember that period of my motorcycle journey with great fondness….

The Commando frame had a very short lived early version with a conventional frame mounted swingarm, as far as I can tell Bernard Hooper re-designed Bauer's rear isolastic mount to include the swingarm and rear wheel, if you look the swingarm spindle doesn't go beyond the gearbox cradle plates.

Another "jolly good show," but I'm baffled as to why you chose the BMW R100RS over the R90S (or an R100S) for this particular comparison. I had the "pleasure" of racing my lightly-modified BMW R75/5 at PBIR (FL) in 1976. That was the age of Reg Pridmore racing, and winning, on an R90S in the Superbike Series here in the United States. I don't recall him racing the RS model, which, as you noted, was BMW's outstanding sport-tourer. The shop I worked at (441 Cycle/BMW) took a 1974 Ducati 750 in trade and it sat on the showroom floor so long the rings got "sticky" causing it to smoke. One evening, the boss told me to ride it home and put some miles on it that night. When I pulled up to my Pop's house he came out to see what that cool sound was. I let him take a spin on it and he came back grinning like a schoolboy! (He had cut his teeth on Indians and Harleys.) The next morning, after a nice long evening ride, that Ducati no longer smoked and ran great. It sold shortly thereafter.
(My best finishes on my R75/5 were a pair of 5th place trophies running against 1000cc machines. No wins but it was a blast!)

I can attest to how hard the Ducati bevels can be to start... but it it's not hard once you realise you've gotta take it just past the back cylinder, otherwise you're kicking against it. It's also got a very short kick lever which nicely goes under the footpeg to get maximum pain if it kicks back, trapping yr foot under it 😅

@@simonsadler9360 a 65kg women can of course control a big bike
But are these things pointlessly big. The real problem with big bikes is slow manoeuvres if you lose your balance it doesn’t matter how strong you are they are gone
Watched a guy asking for help to back is massive cruiser into a parking space on flat ground. Totally stupid situation. Bikes weren’t such crazy sizes years ago and everyone seemed to cope just fine.
The point really is that 300kg bikes are completely pointless I suppose
