  • Hi all,
'Nostromo' is my latest release as part of a 22-track compilation put together by Spilt Milk Rekords and MINDS. Information for buying the comp is linked here: spiltmilkmusic.bandcamp.com/a...
"The issue of mental health in Northern Ireland is a complicated one, the multi-generational trauma brought on by the troubles, coupled with years of austerity have resulted in a complex and struggling system. The pandemic has also led to an increase in feelings of hopelessness, with isolation and uncertainty often over-shadowing signs of progress. At times however, conflict can inspire, unite, and while there is a long way to go, some collectives continue to put one small step forward despite having one of the toughest years of our lives.
MINDS has been an advocate for Mental Health in the city for over three years, but with the closure of clubs and no longer able to raise money through events - the crew have come together to produce a genre-merging V/A - combining their passion for collaboration, mutual aid and community spirit." ~ Sound Transitions/MINDS
The track was commissioned in mid-August 2020, shortly after I had watched the 1982 Sci-Fi classic 'Blade Runner', which was the main inspiration throughout this whole work. I entirely dedicate the process and writing to Vangelis, although it was miles from his standard of soundtracking a dystopian future, the challenge and overall artistic departure was something that I felt was the main product once 'Nostromo' was sent for mastering.
Aside from Vangelis, Ridley Scott is a major inspiration to the track too. Some may recognise the initial computer sample has been recorded and manipulated from Scott's other theatrical franchise 'Alien', more specifically the 'Crew Expendable' scene. 'Nostromo' was also the name of the towing vehicle (USCSS Nostromo).
The synths used, like Vangelis' score, were the Yamaha CS-80 and the Sequential Oberheim OB-X, the two mammoth synths of the mid-80s, known for their versatility and warm sounds. Combined, these two produced contrasting yet lush pad tones and drones, perfect for creating the soundscape I wanted to achieve in the track.
