Don't forget about interlibrary loans. If you're not able to travel directly to a library, go to your local one. Give them the information on the item you're interested in, and ask them to inquire about an interlibrary loan. They may be able to arrange to have it _come to you!_ (at least for a short time).
Good point! Some books are available for interlibrary loan, but if you're trying to access a book that's in a non-circulating collection (like a lot of genealogy books are) or if it's archival material, you likely won't be able to get it that way.
Thank you so much for sharing this information this helps alot
This is great advice! My mother was a Reference Librarian, who taught me the value of interlibrary loan over that of Amazon and eBay (although the latter is another source for finding documents and books that you can't find elsewhere).
This is the best video for genealogy and search assistance
Thank you so much for sharing this information, quick and to the point and no sells pitching 👏🏽 🙌🏽
Glad you enjoyed it!
A word of caution: If you're planning to travel to a library to look at specific items, call or email and ask them to do a shelf check. There are many reasons an item may show up in the card catalog yet be unavailable or missing.
Great suggestion!
This is so true, I worked on music special collections and I was the "find it" person for many requests for different patrons
Amy, thank you ! I absolutely love your step by step instruction. As a detailed person, your method of educating genealogists is fabulous!
Thank you! I appreciate your kind words, and I’m glad you found it useful!
Thank you for this reminder! Its been a while since I've used this site😀
Thank you so much for this information! I've already found a book about one line of my family that an ancestor wrote in 1976.
Wonderful! What a neat find!
I’m in the database ❤❤❤. Game Girls documentary & my book America’s Game Girl Bridging the Gaps 🎉
I worked on a library for over 5 years and always something to keep in mind is the spelling, if the book or item has the wrong spelling as a cataloger you have to type it as is, an example of it is the many way Tchaikovsky is spelled. If the source is in other languages the item you look for you need to look it up translated jn different languages.
Definitely! It's so easy to fall into the "correct" spelling trap. We always need to think of other ways a name could be spelled.
Another really interesting video, thanks Amy! Is WorldCat truly global, or does it only cover USA?
There are libraries all over the world that have their catalogs in WorldCat.org. The majority are in the US, but it is a global database.
So helpful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent info and timing . Thank you .
You’re welcome! I hope this helps you find good things for your family history 😊
@@AmyJohnsonCrow me too.
Thank you for specific information. It helps to figure some things out.
It's fantastic if things that you find have been digitized! Glad for that.
Can I find if there is a family genealogy book for a certain surname?
Yes! Start with a search for the surname and add the word "family." If there are too many results, add a location, like I did with Ramsey family Pennsylvania.
Do you know if you can read the Polk directory online for Marysville, California?
Thank you so much for videos like this one, your AI video, etc. I'm an academic researcher, not a genealogist. Nevertheless, you've helped me repeatedly.
Do you have any recommendations for a site that would have more search results for geneology in Mexico?
I would take a look at FamilySearch.
I just have to say what a coincidence you searched Ramsey because that is my lastname haha i was not expecting that
Questio: that doesn't make any sense- why, when looking for Virginia information, would the paperwork for the results be in TN and MS archives/ or collections?
That's a great question! Archival material that isn't tied to a government agency can end up *anywhere*. (Government records tend to end up in the archives for that county/state/country.) But things like the letter that I showed in the video end up in other places for a variety of reasons. Families, collectors, and researchers often donate their collections to archives where they are living or to schools where they graduated, which might not be the same as where the records originated. Some libraries and archives also have research specialties, so they try to acquire record that fit the subject (organized labor, women's rights, etc) regardless of where the record originated.
But how much Australian contact does web site have.??..Probably not much...
There are libraries from around the world that have their catalogs in WorldCat.org. You never know what you’ll find until you look!
Why don't you just look and see? You never know.
