đ A BIT ABOUT US:
Weâre Marianne & Chris, a happily married couple from the UK. Marianne is a living kidney donor to her best friend, and realising that life was for living and never really knowing whatâs round the corner - we decided to fulfil our dream of travelling full time.
So in March 2018 after the kids had left home, we sold our belongings, rented our house and moved into our campervan called Trudy. We set off to see the world and after vanlifing around Ireland and Europe, we grabbed our backpacks and spent 5 months exploring Central America.
Feeling like we needed a challenge, we planned the ultimate van life adventure! In Jan 2020 set off to drive around the World from UK to UK. But after arriving in Turkey, covid caught up with us and closed the borders, so we had a wonderful 18 months exploring this special country. Realising we were not going to be able to head further East, we decided to do a handbrake turn and go the other way and shipped our van to the USA.
We hope you enjoy coming with us, and weâll continue to share our real adventures and hope you feel inspire to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.
What do you think of Slab City. We like to get off the beaten track and explore the more unusual places. Would you spend 24 hours there? Let us know your thoughts. Hope you enjoyed our look at more of an unusual destination this week - Chris & Marianne x
That's I know a person who moved out there and stays there well it's a stepson of someone I know. But that's where he feels comfortable and fits in there thanks for sharing
It looks like an interesting place, I would have no issues going there. It is not for us to judge people before we know them.
Yeah, but never in the 9 months of Summer in the Imperial Valley. I have to say it arguably could be the hottest area outside of Death Valley in the US. I have been in Indio in mid March when it was 101 degrees 38.3 Celsius. It is not uncommon for it to be 50 degrees Celsius during summer
For decades, other cities & states have dumped their homeless to California either straight from hospitals, jails or given train or bus tickets to California. That's how they "solve" their homeless problem sadly.
Crazy people
Just a note on Emergency vehicles that have their sirens and lights going and are coming up from behind you. You are required to move over to your far right and stop moving, not to keep rolling along as they are beside you. As a parent of a paramedic, please give way immediately/safely to Emergency vehicles for their safety.
different to uk it was always understood that you pulled over to let blue light vechiles pass but now in some circumstances you can get fined for doing just that and get penalty points on your licence no matter how good your intentions were
Hi Thanks for this info - as a former emergency first responder I (Marianne) always pull over - if you see the positioning of the other cars I am between them - Chris has the camera on his side (out of the window) so it may look suspiciously like I am not !! But I pulled in each time to get out of the way ..... they did come very fast so I was still rolling 'slowly to a stop' as one went past - I hope this clears that up - Marianne.
PS - Please thank your child for their service !! As ex NHS workers we appreciate more than most the pressure that clinical staff are under. đș
@@TREADtheglobe Good to know! Thank you for your explanation. My daughter is a Paramedic & my son is a RN at our local hospital & a volunteer firefighter/first responder also. So their crazy mom gets a bit protective. Love your channel!
@@blah329 exactly - thats why we always move over to let them pass
As an avid watcher of this channel I can say without fear of contradiction that Marianne & Chris are very law abiding & drive with the upmost care and attention.
The byways & highways would be a lot safer if weâd more people like them.
The noise from your van sounds like the constant velocity joints (CV) are worn, packing grease into the rubber CV boots may help for a while but they would eventually need replacing, my wife and I enjoy watching your adventures.
Retired mechanic.
Thanks for the info Charles - we are seeing a mechanic this week and hopefully we can get this sorted ASAP - I will share more in the newsletter đ
The video is excellent. I particularly appreciate the opportunity to see and experience the world from my own perspective while traveling, rather than simply accepting it as it appears through the eyes or opinions of others. Perfect example of that, thanks.
I love the quirkiness of it all. Thanks for guiding us through a place I'd never heard of culminating in your excellent philosophical observations.
Thank you so much for taking us here. â€
I also have a small safe in my van. It's bolted in under the bed and I store my valuabales when i'm out. It does give a feeling of greater security especially as a solo traveller.
Until the whole van goes missing. And you. And you've been tortured to reveal where the valuables then both you and the van "disappeared".
Not my kinda place, but interesting to see on CZcams. I would have felt more safe with movie crew there, so that was a good surprise
3:20. Those are date tree. Native in the middle east and now growing well in California.
Marianne and Chris - the new Ross Kemp! Brilliant video, as ever x
OMG, the deer eating humans!!! Dot is certainly memorable!!đźđđ
We love Dot !! đș
Thanks for going and filming. Now Iâve seen it and will never have to go myself đ Iâd rather stay at the Marriott in Palm Springs đ€Łđđ
Happy travels đ
LOL - you are welcome !
Me too I donât like heat rattlers or scorpions in my bed
I love to see "artsy" places like that. Thanks for taking us there
Thankyou for taking us there ! love artist's my favourite kinda people ! lovely to see that peace prevails... love that quote btw đ„łđâ€đ
Straight out of Mad Max that is.
Thought you might meet Max and his V8 Interceptor at some point!
I read about Slab City many many years ago and I've been fascinated by it ever since. Not obsessed just interested, it's one of those places that drifts in and out of conscience every now and then.
You should think about it again
I love the way you guys are being so diplomatic and kind, but lets be honest, Chris thinks these people are off their nut! đ
I wonder why? đ€. đ€Șđ€·đœââïž
Many of them obviously have some screws loose
Great video chris and marriane i had never heard of slab city before till your video there were lovely characters and great art dot was a real character she seemed really lovely and genuine looking forward to the next video x
Enjoyed this! Here thanks to your guest appearance in Eva Zubeckâs last video. Cool to learn about an unusual place in my home state. đ
I really enjoyed this video. I love your non judgmental attitude towards people.
Slab City! In 2018 I was on a solo van trip through the US and believe it or not I went there by myself! Of course I had heard the "stories" and was warned not to go. My friends were besides themselves with worry and tbh I was too..but as anyone who has travelled a great deal knows people's perception of a place is not always the reality. I think at one time it was a place exclusively for society's misfits and miscreants giving the place it's bad reputation..but over the years more and more mainstream folks have started visiting there. I ended up spending 3 days there under the desert stars! I never felt unsafe.
It was very surreal and for me an experience and memory that will stay with me for a lifetime. Dot was not there when I went. Chris' reaction at the deer dining table was honest and funny. Salvation Mt was not so run down either. I was able to walk through all the caves and tunnels and climb to the top and it was just mind blowing to think it was one man's obsession and labor of love to his God. Traveling to these types of places really opens your mind and heart to the fact that we are all more alike than different even when we choose to live a lifestyle other people might not understand. Soo glad you guys overcame your fear and and went there!
Thank you for sharing that - we love to hear others stories and experiences, places evolve and that is also why we can all have such different experiences - I am so happy that we were both able to enjoy our time there ... Excellent đșđ
that was a great video thanks. tour fears were unfounded and found a group of very friendly people. You have to judge folk as you find them not on hearsay.
Another brilliant vlog , your positivity shining through yet again đ xx
Very Cool Tour. I have been watching a lot of the slab videos. You covered it well. Peace. Happy Travels.
what a beautiful way to show people just being people . . continued safe travels happy trails đŁ â€ïž đââïžđșđ»đč
Not the dolphins đ€Ł So great meeting you guys at the slabs! Till our roads cross again đđŒđ«¶đŒ
Typical Slab experience. Amazing vibe. I have the same attraction as you guys. Interesting how they get along so well. Only rule I saw was be kind and respectful to your neighbors. If not you will likely be run or burned out. Works. Nice you had the experience.
Those are date palms. Lots of dates sold in southern Cali.
That was a very interesting place. Enjoyed this video.
Loved it! Such interesting people!
Thank you guys it was a very beautiful and informative video stay blessed safe and healthy my friends đŠđđŸđŠđ
Thank you
Wonderful video!
Hi Chris & Marianne u have just witnessed a different world that others don't want to know about
If you are still around you must go to Borrego Springs and see the dinosaurs sculptures, and Anza Borrego State Park. Plus it is a dark sky area. PreCovid we would fly there from the UK, via San Diego. Plus the native casino and tax free shops at Viejas. But Borrego Springs you must not miss.
Thought you might like to know that Ben Fogle is doing a programme about Slab City tonight on New Lives In The Wild đ
Oh fantastic !!
Thank you for sharing this amazing city !
Great video guys and what an interesting place. Just as you say it has a little Mad Max about it.
Beautiful! Even better than the pictures â„ïž
I've always thought I would fit in quite nice in slab city ,seen a few documentarys on slab city looks real interesting,,, most the time if you treat people with respect they do the same ( most) , great video much love guys â€
Wonderful video Wonderful attitude thanks for sharing â€ïž
Date palms not palm oil.
Love your guys vibe. You two seem really chill. Thanks for letting us tag along.
Thanks for watching!
Coolest place! I guess from growing up in the 60s I can see the Hippy Vibes. Reese Witherspoon was there. Omg! That place might change after the movie is releasedâ
America's only lawless city...Detroit has entered the chat
Ben Fogle has just aired in uk a follow up programme on channels 5 in Slab City. Very interesting if you can watch it on catchup.
If you liked Slab City, then you should attend the Burning Man Festival near Reno, Nevada.
Hi loved your last video , just watched on Channel 5 Ben Fogel went to slab city and followed Dots friend DNA really interesting. Maybe you can catch up and watch it somehow . Keep safe and best wishes
It's called the Sea because it's a land locked body of Salt Water.
Love your adventures
I have never been to Slab City. Seems from everything I have seen online and know about the spot, it has some interesting folk art and is a place where it is very inexpensive to live but few services available. Also old RV's are very cheap to buy and offer a good shelter for a single, or small family. My Great Grandmother's cousin and her husband were early developers of a resort hotel and marina on the Salton Sea in the 1940s through late 1950s. I went there as a toddler as I recall.
Cool! I agreeâŠevery society has its problems. Most people are pretty great though!! I dream about a life like yours!! Wishing you safe travels!!
I like the caption at the end of the video. Happy treading!
You guys are amazing, this is the best video â€ïž thank you for sharing your dreams x
The Palm trees you passed are Date Palm farms, Bombay Beach on the way is always worth the trip!!!
Not my kind of place, but I can say I've done a tour of Slab City!! Keep Treading guys!!!!
Iâve been following you for years and this may be your best film yet. A whole other level of travel reportage⊠well done.
Love this video
I didnât think I had heard of slab city- but I recognized the painted mounds. Such a wonderful experience you had. Thanks for showing us the positive side of humanity! We need more people like you in this country!â€ïž
This video was amazing beautiful, thank you
Excellent video. I'd love to experience slab city.
Awesome, amazing and spectacular â€â€â€
Thanks for showing this part of America! Cheers...đđ
The Salton Sea used to be bigger. The land around it is a terrible place to camp due to the agricultural runoff which has been deposited on the former lake bed and gets blown about by the winds.
I never heard of Slab City but when i am in the area I just might check it out.
Big fan here. Your videos are just pure dead brilliant!
âTravel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all oneâs lifetime.â
- Mark Twain
Pura Vida đ
Mark Twain was a very clever chap !! đș
Great video
Amazing đ€© Video đžđ€
I love the video
Dot is spot on!
Excited to follow your journeys (and catch up on all your past videos!). Thanks Eva for introducing us to you!
Welcome!!
Chris: where did you find that?
The lady: we got it from the donations from one of the dead bodies.
Chris: WOW!!
Dear you both sir and mam, this a wondedfull video,I never seen of this beautiful e
I have been following you for quite a few years. Even have your stickers. We live in the Gulf Islands near Maryanneâs aunt but winter in the American south. I enjoyed your take on Slab City. In fact this whole area isâŠletâs say interesting. We are presently staying in that snowbird community you went by. Itâs called Fountain of Youth Spa Resort complete with mineral springs. Being English born myself, itâs been very interesting to see your take on Canada and America. Great video!
That is awesome!
Those are dates!! Indio area produces the majority of medjools that are sold out of the US
Yo great show I don't go there at night but I live on the other side of the Sea love it at the salten sea
Watch Into the Wild. Thereâs some scenes in Slab City. Including the man that did the religious paintings. And itâs interesting that you say the media says itâs a bad place. Iâve not heard that. Just that it is different.
Not the media - just everyone we asked about it ...
@@TREADtheglobe ohh. You said media. Iâm glad you made it out unscathed!
Once I get everything settled I think I'll be snow birding down that way I sure hope the world finds peace â
Love the video! How did you get your van to the states?
We shipped it over - there is a video đ
You are far braver than I am. Beautiful place to see. đŠđŠ
I read that you went raving for 24 hours ..đđ.
LOL
The bags cover the dates on the date palm trees so the birds don't eat them.
Literally mad max times đđ
one of the best places you been to! x
I think there are many talented people living there. Love the energy the artwork ,and most of all the library
Really fun to watch
X
Brill so glad you enjoyed it
My goodness! Heart warming!
OMG, this was an incredible video documentary of your experience in Slab City. Sadly, we are told we have to fit into a mould, and when we break that, we are not worthy. It shows when you find your tribe, you can be a part of something, somewhere; however that may look. Thank you every week for stepping out of your comfort zone and sharing your journeys.
Cheers Shanelyđ
Thank you
Places like that is where you meet the nicest People. â€ïžđ
ive been watching many channels about slab city, I don't think the folks there are violent, or really criminal types, although im sure some are from time to time but the slab won't tolerate it much...I think they struggle with our modern day society. I'm 60, lost my wife, sold my house of 30 years, bought a travel trailer and living a little ways out in central Texas. I've worked hard my whole life, as many have also, I don't have a lot but me and my schnauzer {Linus] have what we need. I think getting away from this constant moving suck ass system we live in would be good for me. I want to drag my RV and motorcycle to the slab someday and live amongst the ones who say they are not right and have a stay.... just as many that live at the slab I myself have no desire to harm anyone or damage anything, just want to be me and live in peace, having a few good friends would make it even better.... PEASE! PS.. thank you for this positive look at the Slab... you two be safe, I myself would love a stay in the UK, take a Moto tour. how amazing that would be.
Hello Mariann, Cris, The palms with bags hanging under their canopy are date palms Phoenix dactylifera. They are similar to those we have at Saudi Arabia and they have similar varieties. I bought from them while living at the US early 2000s. They where good.
so fun meeting you two at the slab library! hope to see you down the road, safe travels~~~
Hey - thank you - likewise, happy travels and we hope to see you on the road again soon xx
What timing, reese whitherspoon, great vid
Over 100,000 gallons of Latex Paint used to make Salvation Mountain.
All Profits go directly to the Retired Teachers Fund of California. FYI.
đđđđđđ
Ha! That was my jeep at the Eco Village there đ
Fantastic !
Think it would be a great destination for a timeless road tripđ I would be most interested in the remaining municipal utilities that are nearly intacked after the military pull out.
Eline emeÄine saÄlık bu gĂŒzel vlog için kolay gelsin hayırlı iĆler....đđđ
My daughter and boyfriend are there at mo Jos camp staying the month of Jan ...in a white tent...lol
It is a great place đș
Sure donât like the junkyard vibeâŠ. But to each there own
Thereâs a date (the fruit) bar in that area. They have many different varieties
The Slab City seems to be of my kinda society, artists all round. Thankyou for sharing, one little suggestion, if you don't mind, is that the sub titles were hiding some of the beautiful scenes I would have liked to see. If you don't mind...
Love
Tithi
Hi Tithi. Thanks for watching. There are not any subtitles on the video - they are created by youtube and if they are showing on the video at the bottom of the screen click the âïž (gear) icon to turn them off - It's a setting you have in CZcams - Hope that helps Chris :)
