Also Coralife makes a filter skimmer when added as a second filter on tanks with HOB works remarkably well. I am running 5 great reef tanks with this setup. Not a sump in site. 3 AIO tanks as well.

I placed a plastic mesh at the bottom of mine so the sponge does not get squished into the open holes and limit water intake. No overflow and much better filtration I have found. Full flow and no bypass. I use about 3 inches of course sponge. Half inch of filter floss, a bag of Seachem Matrix and a bag of Seachem Purigen. All fits with no restrictions. Crystal clear water.

When using an abbreviation, can you use the full name for something the first time you use it, followed by the abbreviation, such as Hang On Back (HOB) filter. I have a Tidal 55 on my 10gal, it is fantastic. The surface skimmer however may require modification to allow it to intake more surface water in a smaller tank. With a smaller rim/frame, adjusting the height of the filter via some plastic or neoprene foam on the top of the rim/frame may help to lift the filter a bit higher. This "lift" can help improve surface skimming by allowing the water to hit more toward the middle of the surface skimmer intake. The no back-siphoning is what drew me toward this style HOB. It really has been an amazing filter.

I like it. Really nice for a tank that you really don't want to drill and hook a sump up to. Is the water level in the tank just for filming purposes though? That's one thing that kind of bugs me about HOB filters is that the water tends to launch off into the tank which pushes bubbles in and/or causes the occasional spray.

i would imagine the skim being total useless it's right next to the return flow which is a pure disastrous design flaw you'd be better off putting a small wave maker on the opposite side facing the surface this setup would lose oxygen in a week or so no doubt if the water level is high to the point it doesn't make splashing noise or air bubbles.

I tried covering the slits with a filter pad with rubberband but you won't be able to cover all the slits. The mechanical filter floss is on the bottom which is really bad design. If you want to clean the filter floss, you'll have to pull out your biological media (dry out). If you don't know where to put the biological media while you ring out the filter floss, you'll be inclined to submerge it into your tank while you clean...you'll see debris everywhere in your tank when you do this. It's just a mess. There. I"ve listed the negatives that none of the marketing reviewers will tell you.

Not really made for a fry tank, try using a sponge filter

These filters are junk. I bought more than one because I believed the high praise of these HOB filters.
When you pull out the filter basket the dirty water drains back into the body of the filter and back into the aquarium ... what is the improvement???
Also the leveling screw and its mount fall off ... or you may work around this by gluing a board to the body of the filter

you need to add filter floss lol. its exactly the same as pulling out a filter sock, gotta watch out for dripping etc.

As a whole not an honest review..you can't always trust paid promotions not a single negative was addressed or mentioned only positives best to look elsewhere for an honest review to make a better more informed decision.

This is an ad going over the features of a product that brs sells, not an in depth review of long term performance.

Let me start by saying that I am a long time supporter of your company and have had zero issues with BRS. However, I can no longer support BRS with my money if they continue to support the R2R forum, and their white washing of the mere mention of the character traits of gender and sexuality. This should be a total non-issue, and yet because of the ownership's position, it somehow is worth the trouble.
I have spent thousands of dollars at BRS over the years, and I will not spend a single additional dollar until BRS revokes their sponsorship at R2R OR R2R changes their policy on the mere mentioning of gender and sexuality. I know others feel the same, and I expect you have already heard similar messages and will continue to do so until you take some kind of action. Please consider your relationship with R2R thoughtfully, as I would very much like to continue to use your services.
