Great video Chris, Brompton junction had my seat clamp much too tight. You just saved the frame on my new Brompton, Thank you so much!!
Hi Dug
This adjustment we have to do it very carefully. Because it can really damage structure of the frame.
Glad to be of some help.
Nice to have you on board!

Great video Chris, I’ve noticed recently that my seat post slips a little, my knees notice it the most as they start to ache, going to take out the post and clean it and tighten it just a little today.
Hi Juli Anne
I'm glad you like it!
Hope you can fix it. Be patient on tighten it. Bit by bit, so it will not damage the frame.
Nice to have you on board!
Very nicely explained! I haven't had this problem yet, but I have thought about it, especially as I can no longer buy that plastic sleeve as a spare. What to do if I can't get to my Brompton dealer, or he doesn't have one? I decided that if all else fails and I have to use the bike I will try a smear of that seatpost locking paste sold for carbon fibre frames and posts - the microparticles might just restore the grip - for a while. haven't tried it, but I expect I will, one day.
Hi David Powell
Interesting though, but I'm not sure that locking paste will do the trick.
We use it on the road bikes so the seat post stays in place and does not get stuck to the frame. It hapends when the rider sweets a lot .
What do I do is order the parts I know I'll need in advance and put them in stock for when I need them.
So I keep my mind at ease.
Nice to have you on board!
@@ChrisbyBike Point taken - as I said, it's a plan, an untried one and definitely a short term last resort one! It sounds as if Brompton operates a different set of rules in your vicinity than they do in the UK. Here they started, back before Covid, to classify some parts "supply and fit" only. Registered dealers were forbidden to just sell them, and no one else could get them. Seat post clamp inserts were one of the first to go (the height regulators are available) but you can still buy the equivalent but slightly smaller inserts that fit into the telescopic seat post. I've been my own bike mechanic for better than 30 years and about the only operation I won't tackle is wheel building. I'm really quite cross to have discovered recently, while browsing, that in the event of a crash I can't buy replacement forks now - I have to pay a dealer to supply and install them, plus I have to deliver and collect the bike. But I can buy original headsets from a dealer and fit those myself... It's similar for the rear triangle... I mean...
To be fair, some of this resulted from an understandable desire to manage parts supplies in favour of production during the demand peak and supply chain disruption caused by the pandemic. Things have calmed down somewhat now, yet the rules have't relaxed. My nearest dealer is 12 miles away and doesn'r have much of an online presence. A tricky situation to manage, compared with being able to pull parts out of my cupboard 😁
Hi David Powell
It makes sense. The production is not enough for the demand.
My nearest Brompton dealer is at 450km, but they are nice to send the parts that I need, like sprokets and chain.
It is great to be your own mechanic, I can do little fixing, but not the technical ones.
I don't think damage plastic sleeve is that usual. Usualy is seat clamp adjustment.

Superthanks👍
Ohh, now I get it!

Thanks for the tip. I have a folding bike by Tern, this will be also useful.
Hi Vallarta Local

hi, nice video👍 could you tell me please what tools you use for Brompton at home do you have a tool case?
Hi Dastin Lozynski
All the tools we need are on Brompton Tool kit.👍🏻😊
But I do have a torque wrench and some hex keys to make easier to untainted some bolts.
Nice to have you on board!
Hi Chris, another awesome video! I have a very weird one with my saddle. It goes down a bit but the much stranger thing is that it goes sidewards a bit and always towards the same direction. Not sure how or why but I might need to go see a doctor as my body might push it to the right hand side :-)
Where did you get that torque wrench and how much did it cost? Seeing this as an investment and taking the guess out of how much is too much.
Hi Luc Peeters
We tend to repeat our movements and, probably, when you pedal or when getting out the bike, you do a movement that turns it to the right.
No worries, as soon as you fix the seatpost clip it will be fine.
About the Torque wrench, I've bought it years ago on a Bikeshop. It is expansive. But, in my case, if you have a Carbon bike it is extremely necessary.
Nice to have you on board!
@@ChrisbyBike Chris, just removed the seatpost this morning. While everything on the top 95% part looks new the bottom 5%, where you clamp it in the sleeve, is rusted. It is not surface rust which really bothers and surprises me. The sleeve was also not black but had a rust colour and I had a very hard time removing the brown crap with brake cleaner. It's really weird since I live about 100km from the coast and I keep the bike in mint condition (Barbour 2018 version). So I will have to replace it but I like the silver since it fits with this version of the bike, so I might go titanium.
Hi Luc Peeters
I'm glad you found the source of the problem.
I have my Titanium Seatpost for over an year and I'm very satisfied with it. Good choice.
Keep Safe! Keep Riding!
And I have replaced my tension nut with a nice looking specially made Brompton fingernut!!! You just release the tension, and adjust the nut, and then re-apply tension!
Hi Finn Carl Bomholt Sørensen
They have beautiful and much lighter upgrades for seatpost clamps. I'm always tempted to upgrade it.
Keep Safe! Keep Riding!
@@ChrisbyBike I have lately bought a Printed Saddle with an oval carbon frame below, and a new Lightweight Clamp to fit it. I didn't go for the most extreme light and expensive ones (costing half a bike!) but found a more reasonable priced one, much like Yours, and with a folded Brompton on it! But in red, to give a little extra fun! My bike is Flaming Yellow. Finn. Denmark

Hi Finn Carl Bomholt Sørensen
Did you like it?
Is it conffortable?
😁 I had to use the wrench in my tool kit it on my first and second ride!
Hi NoZenith
You are clever, I've just notice that wrench after months. 🤣
Keep Safe! Keep Riding!
@@ChrisbyBike I've used it to adjust the seat post and seat tilt mostly. It has been handy and included all the tools I needed so far since my Brompton is still relatively new. 😊 thanks for the compliment
Hi NoZenith
The Brompton Tool Kit is great. It has everything we need to fix basic problems on our Brompton.
Keep Safe! Keep Riding!
@@ChrisbyBike what is your opinion on the Brompton tube patches? I just watched a video and the guy said they're worthless and he always carries glue and stuff with him. I don't want to waste any of them testing them out but do you think they work at least for a short-term solution to get home?
Hi NoZenith
Almost all of tube patches don't work. The best solution is having a extra tube, replace the flat one, them fix at home with the glue paches.
They realy work, but take longer to dry.
Keep Safe! Keep Riding!
I have lately used my Aceoffix seat clamp on my, standard length, black titanium post. It is lighter and functions better than an original Brompton clamp, because of the wedge system in a ring (I have just got a new, golden "titanium" bolt for the locking system, as I expect the original bolt to be more heavy?). But I still have my longer, black titanium seat post with a ring on top, which functions in a similar way, and without the weight of a clamp. But it may be taken up directly by a less honest person that way. But leaving a hyper expensive, fold to nothing bike, without looking after it at all times, is not that smart! ;-)
Hi Finn Carl Bomholt Sørensen
Yes, Bromptons are made to be by our side all day long.
Keep Safe! Keep Riding!
As a rather tall Scandinavian man my bike was originally delivered with a 600 mm, extra long seatpost, which was impractical when having to put it in my, German, B&W travel box for this purpose (I had to remove saddle and post before packing). So I have also bougth a Standard Length, 535 mm black titanium post for test (same price as an original post, but from China), and my saddle hight is now no longer a problem! I now just pull it out in full to stop, before riding, and it may be a fraction too low for me, but still useable during travels! But being a heavy man, it is pressed down a little during rides, so I may have to find a solution?
It is possible to buy some fluid/grease which may make a seatpost stay during rides on an ordinary racing bike and I may try that for a solution? Finn. Denmark
Hi Finn Carl Bomholt Sørensen
Tell me later if it works. But I don't think it will.
These paste are used so the seatpost doesn't stick to the frame because of Ryder's sweat.
The Brompton seat post is supost to go up and down.
What makes it stay in place is the pressure of the seatpost clamp.
Better chech the seatpost clamp. With a lots of patience, because it can damage the frame.
Keep Safe! Keep Riding!
I have seen several videos where heavier people get a secondary clamp. You put it down over the tube before you put the seat on and it sits on top of the frame of the bike keeping the seat post from slipping down and that will keep you from having to over tighten your seat post clamp. The ones I saw people were getting cheap off Ali Baba or something online but I just Googled Brompton seatpost clamp and you can actually get one that is a factory replacement and it would do the same thing. You just leave it loose on the seat post so you can slide it up and down and once you get the seat post set where you want you put this against the collar of the frame clamp and secure it so it can't slip down www.clevercycles.com/brompton-telescopic-seatpost-clamp-band-and-quick.html
Hi NoZenith
Interesting solution 👍🏻😊
@@NoZenith Yes I have one of those also, but it is HEAVY, and I had to pay the same price for mine, from an English bikeshop during Brexit (Brompton spares aren't common outside England!) as a similar post from Taivanese Producer of top parts for Brompton: Joseph Kuosac!
@@ChrisbyBike I have the problem that it sinks a little during riding (it is a very solid, black titanium post of high quality with thick walls (Not just cheap shit!)) and I expected to eventually being able to use the original "insert" from Brompton! But I have found out that I may just pull it out to Max. It was bought from a wish to be able to fold and put my bike directly in my B&W travel box, so I may still use my ordinary, long, black titanium seat post (600 mm. With an integral ring mount on top, and no end-stop at the other end), when not on vacation!
And my wife is now scared of an eventual coming new round Covid19 (Both being 74) so we may not travel that far away any more? But we are both fond of the Danish, rocky island of Bornholm. We originally had booked 3 weeks on Malta in November, but decided not to go! If anything happens for one of us, the other is in problems, even with an insurance. But Bornholm is similarly hilly and I may need all my gears + my feet and they all drive in the right side of the road on the island, for comfort. ;-)
Hi Chris, i have tried cleaning my seatpost but still getting slippage. I am not sure if the clamp is abit too lose but I am way too scared to tighten anymore and my bike is brand new 😢 is there a certain torque for tightening the clamp so I can feel for confident that I am not over tightening? Many thanks! 😊
Hi Yasmin
It does feel scary to tighten up.
A good way is to do it by small steps.
Put our seatpost up and close the clamp, then turn 1/4 clockwise the bolt. See if it worked. If not, tourn another quarter.
A orher reason for slippage could be the plastic sleeve that is worn out. For that, it is better to take to a Brompton bike shop.
Tell me later what did work for you.
Nice to have you on board!
@@ChrisbyBike hi Chris, i think it just need tightening ever so slightly. I did it and it seems to be fine now! Thanks for the help!

I'm glad it worked, and now you can ride your Brompton again.
