- Hi all. This is how upgraded my hose reel to a powered reel for around £40.
This is a really easy project which most people with basic DIY skills should be able to complete however please use common sense and get someone qualified to help you if you are unsure.
If you do decide to upgrade you hose reel l take NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE OR INJURIES that may occur during the making or the use of this project.

The links for the parts have been removed from this video as many of them no longer worked.
The manufactured design of the sprocket has also changed. The centre hole is no longer big enough. If you would like to find a sprocket for yourself and bore out the middle then the correct size is
68 tooth 6mm 25H

When putting the bolts through the cog,put the cog in a vice as it "kicks"when it tightens up and spins! (one hospital visit to have my thumb stitched!!!) but all in all very happy with the results,

I'm thinking of getting one of those retracting garden hose reels
I’ve got one I use in the garden maybe once a day. Don’t know how it would stand up to being used 20-30 times a day and it’s only 25 m
I wired in from the fuse a voltage regulator from an old 14v drill. This means u have some control over the speed if you step on the hose as it's being wound up. Also I used Cooker mains cable (30A) inside a peace of old 15mm hose for protection.

I did weld up a frame to mount the motor with an adjuster for chain tension.
Mark Sutton I like the idea of adding a chain tensioner but never got round to it 👍
I used a three bolt holed sprocket on my reel no problems
Mark Sutton I had a look a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t find any with the four bolt holes on eBay
I built mine 18 months ago using the same method. The only thing I would like to add is I use a tensioner on the chain.

Great work - it makes you wonder how companies are charging £500+ for them . Bit pricey if you ask me but still a great time saver no doubt .

What a great video, however can you please advise, you state a 24V motor, you are running this from a 12V battery?
That’s correct. It runs perfectly well just slower than it would on a 24v
Could I use a 12v motor?

We’ve got hd power up from cleaning warehous £450 plus vat little pricey..... but I would never go back to manually hose reels

bigwig7 hi mate. Sorry I have had to remove the links as most didn’t work and I was struggling to find the replacements. Most of the parts are available from EBay but the main struggle was getting the big sprocket that fitted on the hose reel

Hi Dave, thanks for the video, very helpful indeed. I've converted my Gardiner hose reels successfully but I'm struggling to find a decent in line fuse to use, could you let me know what you used in the end please? I've been using 15a blade fuses with it being a 13.5a draw, but it blew them fairly regularly. I found some continental 15a slow blow fuses but struggled to find the inline holders!
Jason F I use something like this. Can’t find the exact one as I have but similar.
I fuse everything off it 2x controllers 2x hose reel lights and a thermometer

great DIY. thanks. I will be buying the items to do this myself. If I get a separate 12v battery will it need to be charged every day after a days work or can you get a couple of days out work of it using the motor?
I use a split charger on mine so not sure how long it would last. The motor has got quite a high draw on it. It all depends on size of battery, the amount you use it etc so it’s a bit of trial and error. Sorry I couldn’t help more.
Squeaky Clean Dave hi im strugging with the wiring up. (Not electrical minded at all) I'm only confused about the wiring of the switch. I have exactly same switch as you... does red cable go into both or....? Please help. Many thanks
The red cable goes from the battery up to the switch then back out of the switch to the motor. The black goes straight from the motor to the battery. On the switch I joined the 2 buttons together so that they both worked. It’s a bit difficult to describe so if you aren’t sure get someone to show you to make sure you get it right as even though it’s only 12v it can still give you a nasty shock.
Hi Dave great vid thanks. Have bought all the materials, thought I would wire up in shed first, just cannot get the circuit to work with the winch switch . As soon as I introduce the winch switch which is up and down only and no seperate on/off switch the circuit does not operate. Is it ok that the winch switch is a 240v switch? Which I assume the one your using is? Thanks Dave
Joey Jones the one I use is a 250v 5amp. I only use it as an on off switch. I did get some help from an electrician friend of mine to wire it as I’m definitely not expert on wiring. Any switch would do as long as it carries the ampage

Hi Dave, you have convinced me to go for this solution over using a drill!! Can I ask if there are any upgrades/mods that you can think of since doing the original. I looked at buying the hoist switch that you bought but the seller actually states that it is of low quality and wont last long!! How did yours work out?
Crystal Clean Window Cleaning there are possibly 2 things I would change. The hoist switch is one and the other is I would probably use a new reel. The one I used is a bit to worn and slightly bent so it would run better with a new one

Without going out and counting the teeth I can't telly exactly as its been so long but I think it was 80 teeth 6mm and I think the pitch is H25.
I had trouble getting the sprockets thats why I removed the links out of the description.

Did mine but I didn't quite get the sprocket central, the chain now goes tight then loose when in use.
Would the chain tensioner you use on Mark 2 help this? Or should I try to refit it?
Yes it would definitely help
i mounted to a board like you, within weeks the board was falling apart and holding water

Another well documented vid. Will you take the whole reel outside to do jobs to direct the host to the right position, is this portable?
Polzn Bladz at the moment I can take it out of the van so I have more room in the van for carrying things but when working the reel stays in the van. This saves a lot of energy lifting the reel in and out.

Gabor Csapo it not that much harder. You have to think a bit more about how you position your van but it outweighs how much easier it is then winding your hose in every time

Shaun Hills I sorry Shaun I haven’t got a diagram. If you are unsure I would recommend you find someone to give you a hand as electrics can be a bit dodgy. I bodge mine but I’m not sur if it was right. A much better idea and easier to fit is the remote control one I fitted on my upgrade

It’s a 24 volt 250 watt but I run it on 12 volts and it works really well
Switch its UP / DOWN. So it can work on a both way? Or you using only one switch from those two?
dawidddddddddd only using a one way switch as it’s easy to pull out. 👍

Hi Greg. I have updated the links for the sprocket and the hoist switch. they seem to have changed the sprocket design slightly from the 4 bolt holes to 3 but I don't think it will make any difference. I have also changed the hoist switch as I don't the the one I had could handle the power draw on the old one. Hope this helps. Dave

@@squeakycleandave1 Hi Dave, because the ebay seller has changed to 3 bolt holes, i believe the diameter on the center hole of the sprocket is smaller so you won't be able to fit the black central manifold through the hole. i am going to order one with a bigger centre diameter. i'll let you know if it's definately the problem.
Great Video! What size of hose do you recommend for 300ft lenght and how many liters per liter.
Thanks Kamil K. Im using the 6mm hose I used to use when I was lifting the hose reel in and out of the van all day but now its mounted in the van Im thinking of using 8mm as it puts less strain on the pump
I am running my flow at around 1 1/2 - 2 litres per minuet.As I have a 600 litres tank and I work alone I can have my flow quite high without worrying about running out. I find this really speeds up the rinsing

What wire thickness do you use please? I don’t think the twin core is big enough
Shaun Hills I can’t remember what sized wire I used but what I did was work out the amps which is watts divided by bolts 250/12=21amps then I select my cable accordingly 👍

Gilles Horton 3 things I can think to check
1) is the motor lined up tight enough
2) is the chain tight enough. May need a chain tensioner but not sure how well they work.
3) have you oiled the chain. This made a massive difference to mine. I keep a tin of bicycle chain oil in the van

Gilles Horton no it doesn’t need to be super tight. If you can move the motor closer and shorten the chain that might help as well.

I switched it up to the 24v and it goes mental quick! But now this chain is having issues 🙄Going to try re-allign the the motor and putting some oil on it, and hope for the best. Thanks for the info matey 👊🏽

Hi Dave having trouble getting the 85 link chain got the other bits does it have to be 85 links i on ebay they seem to say 45/90 link
It’s not a problem if it’s longer. You would just move your motor further back or take some links out

Krzysiek Gie shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve got a split charger but I also give it a charge over night once every couple of weeks. My round is very compact so I don’t travel far enough to charge it with the split charger

There are a few things to try
1 is the chain to tight
2 is it all lined up correctly
3 dodgy motor. To test it take the chain off and see if it spins freely

@@davidfuidge9313 that’s why I took the links off. I couldn’t find one either. They have redesigned the sprocket with a smaller hole in the middle so it no longer fits over the plastic cone. It needs to be 68 teeth 6mm 25H

Its a 250 watt 24volt scooter motor. the motors are easy to get but people are having trouble getting the sprockets

Hi Dave, is a leisure battery needed for this or can it run from the main van battery?
I always run it off a leisure battery as it takes a fair bit of power
Can I use 47 Tooth sprocket or it must be 64?
I am asking becouse 64 has only 3 holes for screws
dawidddddddddd if you use a smaller sprocket it would make the reel faster but would put more strain on the motor
B bigger sprocket would be slower but you motor would last longer

If you want to find your own it’s a 68 tooth 6mm 25H sprocket. Make sure that the hole in the middle is big enough

Mark Wilson Hi Mark thanks for watching. The 24 volt motor was the best one I found to suit my needs. I works off a 12volt battery just slower. I’ve been using it for a couple of months now and found it works well.

Chris Farri I’ve got a 6 port fuse box with 2pumps, my hose reel, LED lights inside the back of the van and a 12volt thermometer which tells me the temperature of the water in my tank all hooked up to a common live that comes off 1 cable from the battery. I will try and do a video of the back of my van at some time this week
One other thing is I would try and get a better hoist switch. The one in the description isn’t really strong enough

I'm about to have a go at converting my reels to save my shoulders a bit of strain.
Absolutely fantastic. Been using it for nearly a year and a half and had no problems with the 250w motor. If you wind it in to fast it throws the chain occasionally so I can control the speed just by how tight I hold the hose. When the hose is fully out and round a few corners it can stop it but if it’s out that far I tend to pull it closer to the van so I know I’m not catching anything.
I am so pleased I did it and can’t imagine going back to rolling it in by hand👍

Tim Hancock. Hi Tim Sorry it taken so long to get back to you. I had to go out and count the teeth on the sprocket. The one I’m using has 80 teeth on it for a 6mm chain. Look on EBay an electric scooter sprocket. Hope this helps

That’s the main problem. They have changed the design of the sprockets so are now really difficult to get one with a big enough hole in the middle.
You will need a 68 tooth 6mm 25H sprocket. Hope you can find one
