    As a former flight attendant this is an absolutely nightmare for everyone😢as I can see from the video a passenger took from the interior not many were strapped in and even if someone did survived the crash,that is the coldest place on earth,how do you survive that environment,atleast everyone looked relaxed and were enjoying themselves onboard before the end came😢lot's of Prayers to the crew,passengers and families ❤my heart broke 💔 when the rescue team found a flight attendant still wearing her green and white dress uniform,all flight attendants have that special bond❤

      What I find interesting is when the recovery team found Capt. Collins , they said he was “virtually unscathed “
      The plane hit Mt Erebus at 500 km
      It seems like the cockpit and pilots would have been completely obliterated.

    Even after 40 years the CVR remains unreleased (except for transcripts). I dont mean to be ghoulish or insensitive but it would be interesting to hear the flights final moments as ive heard other more deadlier crashes CVRs moments before tragedy.

      The coordinates programmed into the inertial navigation system by the pilots before the flight were incorrect. While they programed in what they were told to, apparently it was off by nearly 45km. coordinates programmed into the inertial navigation system by the pilots before the flight.

  • @pennyspringdoor
    @pennyspringdoor Před rokem

    As one of my old mates (Michael Knight) suggested, in relation to this event:
    "'1. The airline was Hell bent on providing a competitive Antarctic flightseeing journey while (operationally) attempting to conduct those flights on the smell of an oily rag. This seems evident from the various comments provided in relation to route briefing conduct and pilot familiarisation flights.
    2. The pilots of NZ901 (as all Air NZ pilots) were accustomed to following the Aircraft Inertial Navigation System (AINS) most of the time, except when engaging in VFR/VMC operations or when below the transition altitude, which in NZ is around 13,000 feet. They would trust the coordinates provided by the navigation unit almost religiously and would not expect any significant alteration to the navigation track unless first being notified of this, which they weren't. After all, they used the Air NZ navigation unit to provide AINS coordinates for nearly all of their long range navigation, without question and without doubting them.
    3. The pilots flew by AINS during the descent WITHOUT any other reliable enough navigation aids and the pilots elected to descend as if they were flying VFR in VMC conditions. It appears that they did not take into consideration the visual cues outside of the cockpit window which would have been telling them that (geographically) they were not positioned correctly for a continued descent. The DME equipment was not available at that point, so "distance out" worsened the confused way in which that portion of the flight was conducted. Descending turns are not usually recommended when using AINS in marginal VFR/marginal VMC conditions.
    4. After doubts were raised in relation to both the track and in relation to those visual cues, the captain did not execute a U-turn and climb so as to achieve a "backtrack" or back course climb until being able to better determine the aircraft position.
    5. Had the (RNC chart) stipulated Minimum Safe Altitudes been maintained throughout the descent or had Air NZ flight operations insisted that DESCENDING using only AINS on that track was safe (even though the track coordinates were later determined to have been incorrect) neither pilots would likely have been considered culpable in relation to this event.
    6. In any case, based on hearsay and on circumstantial evidence it appears clear that following this event many airline staff behaved in a deceitful manner, presumably to obstruct the investigation in relation to certain operational responsibilities which were required to be maintained by the airline at that time."
    I fully support his summary.

      Nope. Air NZ lost one of its DC8s in a training flight crash in 1966 that killed 2 crew. A few months prior to erebus an Air New Zealand Fokker F27 Crashed trying to land at Auckland during poor visibility and torrential rain killing 2 crew also. Air New Zealand lost one of its Airbus A320s in 2008 in france whilst on a Test flight along with the 7 crew onboard. It had been leased to XL Airways and repainted in the air NZ livery and was less than 24 hours from its return flight to NZ. Also 6 died in an Eagle air (air NZ subsidiary) Beechcraft crash in march 1995.

    Sorry to be that guy, but this animation is not accurate. TE901 was not flying in cloud or whiteout as depicted when it crashed. Recovered film from passenger cameras showed the aircraft was flying in sunlight and scattered cloud during the descent and orbits, and flying under a cloud layer during the final run to the mountain, but remaining in clear air right up until impact. The only whiteout in effect was where the cloud met the mountain ahead of the aircraft making the rising ground invisible to the crew.

    • @HPG747
      @HPG747 Před 4 lety

      In such proximity without a positive visual of Erebus, the crew should never have been cruising at 1,500 feet - way below the 12,500 foot mountaintop. Obviously the sky was not clear over Ross Island.
