- This two-part series examines the Tamiya 1/35 scale Steyr 1500A.
Part 1 features an un-boxing, a look at the Tamiya Steyr product line, a detailed examination of the instructions and we also look at each of the sprues. Our discussion reveals the kit's strengths and weaknesses, its price, and compares the accuracy to the real article.
Part 2 illustrates the construction phase of our Steyr project complete with painting and weathering. The video examines various techniques and materials which provide the viewer with a detailed look into how this amazing little kit is brought to completion.

Hi Ken. The Kubelwagon may have something to say about that! The Germans used literally hundreds of different civvy truck designs during war and it's interesting that the Steyr often emerges as the most popular with modelers. Was going to do my first German vehicle the Horsch and was looking for some ideas and an approach to the build. I am normally an aircraft and USA Vehicle builder. This video was outstanding. I am literally going to follow every step on my build!.

Besides model-building we seem to also share an interest in video games. Perhaps not as heady as a software engineer but I worked as a level designer for a video company for a while. Although it's much more fun building in styrene than pixels!

Great build and video.Im building same kit and following your techniques.Have not done hairspray chipping in awhile.What is the reason you used sponge chipping rather than hairspray chipping on some areas?
Thanks for the note Mike. The two techniques yield different result so I usually use them both. The sponge adds to the base the chipping creates.
Excellent ! Glad I found this channel ! I really like your dent technique.. It looks much better than the "melted dent method". Although I do like to heat to bend straight fenders found on tanks & jeeps. Keep up the great content!!

@@stevieRay3211 I'm looking at doing a kubelwagen. I really liked some of your weathering methods too! Like that Tamiya X-26 Clear Orange for wood / leather. Do you have any recommended clear varnishes that will work with all kinds of paints including oil / acrylics & enamels ? Do you use Tamiya TS-13 / TS-80 clear "rattle can" spray?
The "what is the best clear coat" debate has been raging for a while and there are many opinions. I've tried a few different ones and they all seem to work about the same although Alclad II Aqua Clear seems to have the edge at least with popular opinion. You really can't go wrong with any Tamiya products and the rattle can stuff works well. I use an acrylic clear coat since I use oils and mineral spirits for my washes and streaks and don't want the clear coat to dissolve. Currently I'm using Pledge (sometimes sold under the brand name Future) until the bottle runs out and it seems to work okay although it gets a lot of knocks from modelers. You have to experiment and find what works for you.
Are you based in the US? Coz it’s hard to get enamel paint here as the acrylic ones. 😅
So, I need to go vice versa, base coat in acrylic and weathering in enamel, right?
I don't think enamel would work for chipping. It isn't soluble in water and using a thinner on it would likely wipe all the paint off. You could try it on a bit of scrap but I'd bet it would turn out to be a mess. Maybe use a lacquer instead of the enamel if that's available. Your undercoat has to be a non-water soluble paint so it stays put when you wet the area (the parts covered with acrylic) that you're chipping. Sponge chipping on its own can still look really good.

Thanks for the nice words Steve. Keep building and practicing, and hopefully the videos help, and in no time you'll be an ace. I used plastic cement for the body, its the strongest when attaching plastic to plastic. I use CA when attaching PE to plastic or when gluing pre-painted parts, usually in final assembly where the joint doesn't have to be strong. Thanks again for the comment!
Hey Tom how do you get that perfect shading on the seats and cover? I know you use oil paints but it is dry brushed? Every time I attempt this it never comes out right. Any help is appreciated.
It takes practice for sure. It's not dry brushed in the traditional sense. It's a matter of blending in the shadows and highlights. I use a small straight edge brush and touch a tiny amount of a dark colour for shadows, and dab it on. Then using a larger, really soft brush (sable is ideal) I blend the edges. Same procedure for the highlights. Look at how oil painters paint fabric and look carefully how the shadows and highlights are defined.

We're working on three dimensional, sculpted parts, so it's easier to pick out the areas that need dark and what areas need light colours. It's really an illusion that we're creating. Practice. You can always wipe away the oil paint and start over if its not working.

Hey Norm - there is no part 3, the above video is the final one on the Steyr. She may be put in a diorama in the future if time permits but for now we're calling it done.
