  • Hello All,
    In this video, we will discuss 5 considerations about working for a FAANG company. This are my opinions on things I wish I had known before accepting a job offer and I want to share with you to make sure you have the right expectations (ex. FAANG Salary, FAANG RSUs or stock options, FAANG work hours, FAANG competition). This applies to anyone including roles in project management, product management, those interested in getting a job in project management using the latest Google Project Management Professional Coursera certificate. #googlepm #pmp #faang
    Questions we strive to answer:
    1. Is working at Facebook, Apple, Google, Amazon and Netflix really as good as it seems? Or are these overrated?
    2. What I wish I had known before accepting an offer at a FAANG
    3. How many hours do you need to work at a FAANG? What's the typical employee conditions and hours like?
    4. Are these considerations deal-breakers? Depending on your own background and preferences, what is a framework to help you decide if this is a good opportunity for you to pursue?
    5. Am I going to become a millionaire by working at a FAANG?

    Hi Recipe for Success Viewers: What do you think? Would these reasons deter you from accepting a job with a FAANG??

    This was a very levelheaded & necessary video, particularly on this CZcams space.
    You see so many Hype “Tech CZcamsrs” telling you that your only definition of success as a Tech Professional is when you end up contributing to a FAANG’s mission.- Then why do their staff leave?
    But what happens to the rest of the world, if everyone decides to go build “digital stuff” for FAANGs, who’d fly planes, who’d protect the nation at the border, who’d take care of sick people during pandemics?
    I think the work-life balance hype and huge valuations in billions which these companies received in the early 2000s, sort of made it look like the Jerusalem of the Pinnacle of where your Tech Career should end up in.
    Personally like you said, I think you still have to step back a bit and ask, will I be functioning & loving the work I do if I join a FAANG, or is all I want a big name on my CV, so I could move through the rest of my career with relative ease? - There’s nothing wrong with that too.
    These FAANG “startups” are no longer small tightly-knit teams, they’re now corporate behemoths on the scales of the IBM/DELL of the 80s, which most Tech folks swore to never want to work in.
    The road is personal career discovery is a difficult one, but once you find an org that both fits your personality, you’re supported & encouraged, & you’re paid handsomely for it.
    I think you’re sorted.

      Hi Lanre - Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with me.
      I'm sorry to hear that others are pushing their personal definition of success on their viewers. When I started this channel and named it 'Recipe for Success' it was because there is no one path, there is no right or wrong - it's just what you want, what will make you happy and how can you get there.
      Wishing you all the best!

    Reality is the best teacher, atleast you are breaking it down correctly many people are obsessed with algorithms instead of learning how to build a product that actually works kudos.

    You should check out the coding interviews. These are horrible companies and everybody else is copying those algorithmic style problems.

    Just the banking industry vet over here laughing at “banker’s hours.” It’s a valid comparison for the sake of simile but that easy in/easy out thing really does not exist in banking unless you’re c-suite, and hasn’t for years.

    • @RecipeforSuccess1
      @RecipeforSuccess1  Před rokem

      Def agree! I was under the impression that the term referred to the hours a bank is opened Ie 9-4:30. You’re right though that many people who work in the banking industry work much more than that!

    I just graduated and I've been so nervous. Seeing the CZcams culture take on software engineering isn't helping. A lot of them treat it like every company is FAANG. I just asked my dad today, because I'm nervous for the technical interview. For context, he's been a senior developer, and has 10 years of experience. He was in construction for the majority of his life. And when I'm telling him what I'm preparing for, he told me he only needed that stuff one time when he interviewed with google. He basically just said, "just put your resume out, you'll be fine, in my case, the first job asked me stuff I learned in school, there wasn't even a technical interview." And then it hit me: lots of places aren't as competitive as google, of course they're not going to go so far. Then why does everyone push it like you should be working for the big guys or nothing? Clout?

    • @RecipeforSuccess1
      @RecipeforSuccess1  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for sharing your experience Mike! I imagine everyone is incentivized to try to get you as far as you want to go - schools get to say "X% of our graduates get hired by Google" and obviously the compensation is known to be good. I also think some of those larger companies have the budget and vision to try different products that can and do fail. So if you're motivated by interesting problems that could be another reason for a fit. That being said - I would disagree with the idea that its "the big guys or nothing". SO many people work for small and medium sized companies that do awesome stuff. Also, many people aren't as career oriented and prefer reasonable work/life balance. That's okay - at the end of the day you have to live with those decisions, not them. :)

      Hi Obiwan - It's okay to disagree with my opinion! However, I hope you don't think I'm telling people not to apply - if you're interested, you definitely should. I wanted to call out that a competition/high bar exists within these companies (again in my experience).
