Back in the day, when I played Most Wanted, I was covinced that the nitro boost was coming from the rear lights because of the red trace

The flames from the exhaust are merely a byproduct of the NO2 being combusted, it isn't actually what propels the car forwards. The NO2 is injected into the engine itself; creating an oxygen rich environment, which in turn allows for more fuel to be injected, effectively allowing a greater power output.
NO2 also cools the intake air, creating an even further oxygen rich environment in the engine.
In short: NO2 is basically like a shot of steroids for your car, except minus the ball shrinkage. The flames contribute nothing to the practical effect.

Limited nitrous was the best one from Pro Street. It required a right timing to use each bottle with no recharge between the laps. No mindless spam of Alt, N or whatever button for unlimited nitrous. Not that I'm saying I hate unl. NOS, I just prefer the limitation.

No nitrous system is an afterburner. All it does is adding additional horse power for a limited amount of time. If flames shoot out of your exhaust you are either having a huge problem or attached flamethrowers...
In MCO: Once you start the Engine more or less to non smoke will come out of your exhaust as it simulates the regular exhaust smoke, using nitrous simulates the increased fuel burning as in more and faster smoke coming out of your exhsust. When engine overheats or is damaged dark smoke will come out and Engine room as well and you hear it boiling

Tbh i miss underground 2 that was when nfs was in the zone in the arcade racing genre the cars everything felt so different back then and most importantly it was fun to play and yes some times it may feel boring but it was still an amazing game even up to this day the game is still awesome

Fun fact, Underground 2 has a special nitrous sound that doesn't always trigger even when the conditions are met. It requires stage 3 nitrous (late edit: any stage works), duration-biased tuning at least a little (possibly (late edit: doesn't need tuning at all)), and close to 2x full tank. Hard to describe in words, but I guess it's more dramatic.
Another fun fact, Stage 1 nitrous in Undercover is literally useless. It drains super fast and doesn't even increase acceleration at all.

I just love how in Pro Street, when you NOS the camera just hangs back like the tail truck carrying the camera just forgot the accelerate with the car, and how the steering enters the arcade dimension.

There is actually a story as to why the taillights had a glare effect when you use nitrous in older NFS games.
During the olden days of Group B rally in the 80's, during dusk, on film both the headlights and taillights had that glare effect because the cameras weren't able to keep up with the jerky and fast cornering of the titans of racing. I highly recommend you watch the compilations on CZcams. They were insane back then

Not the original game from 2002, but EA made a remake of the same game in 2005. Most likely for PS2 so yes that game had NOS.

I love the absolutely unnecessary amount of work that went into the individual stages of nitrous. How many takes was it for those first transitions, those were magic!

It's optical flow time interpolation in Premiere. He used it to make the laggy footage seem smoother, which is why you'll see it jumping between 60 fps and below, especially during The Run where it was particularly jarring.

In payback the nos effect looked the best for me and it changes sound the more nitrous bonus you have
Don't forget that NOS in UG2 had an even more extreme effect when the second bar was full too.

Great memories, my favorite of all was Underground 2 Nitrous, but when you fill up to level 2, the bar turn bright blue and when you use the nitro everything turn like neon and blur damn, i love it, i want a Underground 3.
Even sound effects were special and louder when you used the doubled NOS. Like a jet engine.

For me Rivals has the most satisfying nos especially with the blurring heat shimmering throughout the exhaust.
thanks to underground 2 and most wanted when i was little i always thought that nos came out of the rear lights and made the car shoot flames from the exhaust that gave the car that boost.

Technically it's not a nos system but a "turboish" system since it don't use your nos gauge

The best nitrous systems were in Mostwanted,Carbon,Hot pursuit (2010) and Mostwanted 2012 Until nfs 2015.I don't like Paybacks (Slow charge burst nitrous) it makes you feel fast but then it runs out so fast it's like what was the point of using that? I Like the normal Burning nitrous in the old nfs games and Rivals has the best Nitrous flames tbh.

Hot pursuit 2010 has such a nice balance of n20, with Cops having fast burning nitrous to catch racers, while racers have a slower system to gain a ton of speed if used correctly. Let's not forget the insane Turbo weapon for the racers either.
Recharge too. Racers have to drive dangerously (oncoming, oncoming near miss, etc.) to recharge at all. Police nitrous recharges automatically at speed.
Full nitrous is police's only counter (apart from spikes and hard braking) to EMP. czcams.com/video/JRrOLf4zonk/video.html

Burn nitrous are common applied since underground 1.
Favorite use is Powershot Nitrous,*Jump Nitrous (Terminal Velocity required) You can only see in MW 2012

Honestly this best nitrous system was in Hot Pursuit 2010 only because the graphics looked so realistic
NFSU is where the real shit started. The NFS games before were dope af already dont get it twisted, but NFSU let you customize your car specifically how you wanted it to look, and NFSU2 let you do that AND allowed you tune your car specifically for every race.

The nitro flames that are most beautiful to see are those of nfs HP 2010 and Rivals.. But the most beautiful to listen to is the NFSU2. And the limited nitrous was from Pro Street, is the best to strategy.
If we are talking about the NOS system Animation alone, ignore the Rear Light Trail.
I think the most Realistic Animation sorted from best to worst:
1st NFS Pro Street, damn that fire Animation and texture, and smoke isn't exaggerating, very close to real life.
2nd NFS 2015, also no exaggerations.
3rd NFS HP 2010, least Realistic but still acceptable
4th NFS Rivals, Ho-Lee-Chit that was exaggerated like Engine being pushed beyond Rev Limiters but still awesome
5th NFS U1&2 both seemed like early Fast Furious movie nitrous, exaggerated but cool
6th NFS MW 2005, TBH this looks like using a Low texture fire and smoke Animation, probably because PS2 DVD back then couldn't fit HD textures with all those open world in nfsmw.
7th NFS Carbon, the fire Animation is somewhat okay, but the smoke makes it looks like you're standing still instead of cruising at high speed.
The rest of NFS NOS Animation are just like Neon Beam to me, yeah, ugly. Even NFS Payback NOS Animation is bad

I've weened myself off of Nitrous in most of my racing games during the 8th gen (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Burnout Paradise: Remastered, Fast RMX, NFS Rivals being the arcade exceptions), the rest either have KERS and DRS under player control (Project CARS 1&2, Assetto Corsa) or don't use those mechanics at all (Forza Horizon 3&4, Assetto Corsa Competizione)
I think im the only one who thinks Boss forgot the PS2 version of NFS HP2 in the cop side was the first game to feature the N20 system, 1 year before of Underground????
