  • KINDERDIJK WINDMILLS: DUTCH DREAM DAY - For my first visit to the Netherlands there were two things I absolutely had to see: windmills and wooden shoes. Visiting Kinderdijk accomplished both and turned into my Dutch dream day - complete with a giant rainbow!
    We took a water bus from Rotterdam and when we arrived it was pouring rain. Freezing, we stopped at the only restaurant in town (which, thankfully, was good!) for traditional Dutch split pea soup to warm up. The weather changed every few minutes and continued to be crazy all day: torrential rain, wind gusts, sunshine, and a rainbow! Kinderdijk is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it's the largest concentration of old windmills in all of the Netherlands. There are nineteen windmills that were built in the 1740s as part of the water management program to help Dutch people - as they say - 'keep their feet dry.' The whole area is beneath sea level so there were real problems with flooding and windmills were used to pump water. The story of how Kinderdijk got its name is very interesting. In 1421 there was a devastating flood where thousands of people drowned. When survivors got the nerve up to leave their homes and survey the damage, they saw a cradle floating in the water and heard the sounds of a baby crying. The story goes that a cat was jumping up and down in the cradle to keep it from tipping. The child was saved and that's how Kinderdijk, which means 'Children's Dyke' in English, got its name.
    The area is extremely picturesque and looked like the Holland I've seen in my dreams: windmills dotting the horizon and turning in the wind. We even saw a man wearing yellow wooden shoes. He wasn't a tourist either! Another highlight was getting to go inside one of the windmills and see what it was like to live there. Until 1916 it belonged to a miller's family who had thirteen children. I expected it to feel really cramped and dark and was really surprised at how large and light it felt. There were many floors (which included climbing a lot of narrow ladders) and tall ceilings which made it feel more spacious. The white paint on the walls also magnified the light that came in through the windows. We got to try sleeping on one of the beds - only just fit!
    Visiting Kinderdijk and getting to experience Dutch windmills and someone wearing traditional wooden shoes was the most fun day I've had in the Netherlands so far. The appearance of a huge rainbow was more than I could've asked for. Wow! Have you seen windmills in person? What did you think?

    most windmills, including the ones at Kinderdijk are still operational. Meaning that the mills at Kinderdijk are still the main reason why that land is dry. Yes, there are modern backups for if the mills fail, but those windmills were built to last.

      I watched the video yesterday 11-15-2017. I went to bed last night knowing that an accurate "cozy" count had not been provided. I woke up this morning just knowing I had to be the one. I had to step up and do what needed to be done! I had to muster courage, bravery, and fingers! I had to .... Okay, okay ... I counted 6 references to cozy. Don't laugh but I had to run it again because I swore there had to be more. I think the last Marc "cozy" seemed like more than one but he did have a sparkle in his eye as it was said just after Eileen referred to 13 children! Thank you both for this bit of fun. You are great video hosts and good sports to smile. CHEERS!

    I liked the way the windmills blended with the countryside…So big and majestic in how they move.
    What an enduring symbol of Dutch ingenuity! Were the Dutch the first to “Hack” the wind?
    … Modern scientists are still trying hard to make the best use of wind energy!
    I enjoyed this tour very much. …Loved the man in the wooden shoes too! Thanks for a great video!

    • @EileenAldis
      @EileenAldis  Před 6 lety

      That's a good question - I'm not sure if windmills are a Dutch invention or not. They're certainly the country that first pops to my mind when I picture them though. It was cool to see the old ones contrasted with the newer windmills that dot the horizon today. Seeing the wooden shoes in action was a real bonus!

      The Greek Heron of Alexandria (10 AD-70AD) is generally credited with inventing a wind driven wheel for power. The Dutch were the first to develop and mass use of the saw mill, allowing them to outproduce the English during several Anglo Dutch wars.

    I think windmills have just about caught up to lighthouses in my affinity for such iconic structures :) Never seen one in person. Just those white, more modern type thingys ..I think they're not actually windmills anyway..turbines ? Now I may want to start collecting windmill models ( as I have with lighthouses) So, thank you :)
    Great catch of the rainbows!! Gotta love the quick changing weather out there :) And absolutely fascinating story of how the town got its name!

    • @EileenAldis
      @EileenAldis  Před 6 lety

      I'm glad you also found the story fascinating! I love learning about name origins and this place definitely did not disappoint. They have those wind turbines in The Netherlands as well but of course they're so different from the old style. They look cool too, though, especially when there are massive groups of them together. That's neat you collect lighthouses! We saw a beautiful lighthouse at Peggy's Cove one summer. I really love the symbolism of them - a light in the dark, guiding people home. :)

    • @toobydude41
      @toobydude41 Před 6 lety

      Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia! I've seen photos of that lighthouse and yes it's gorgeous! I believe I heard it used to function as a post office. And would you believe I wrote a poem about lighthouses (some 10 years ago) and the main theme of it is what you mentioned! A shining light in the dark, guiding people to shore/home through choppy waters. That is indeed one of the reasons I got into them! Amazing :)

    The windmills over time play an important role during the Dutch Golden Age (16th and 17th century) to automate the production of timber that was used the build a large Dutch fleet to travel the world for trade, which eventually lead to an enormous wealth, and even today the Netherlands is still ranked 4th in the world in the area of trade.

    windmill is that tall grey mil that generates power, not the mills at Kinderdijk. Technically speaking ;)
    Those are not bunk beds, but box-beds. Or in Dutch 'bedstede'. Farm houses had them as well as it was part of the walls as well, saving space in general.
    For wanting a mill as your home, those things are expansive in purchase and maintenance. Just a fair warning for your wallet ;)
    The wooden shoes is mostly to give tourists what they want to see, they are not used as often as in the past. You can buy them yourself as either souvenir or to wear yourself. The man in the video uses them as part of the experience for tourists, basically to show how a miller would have looked like in those days.
