      DISH is going internet similar to Apple TV and CZcams TV. I told my company that worked in Cable in 2016 this would happen and T-Mobile is in their sights as well. Cell companies will become part of the Starlink network. Next will come Quantum communication replacing Sats with using nonlocality.

      The day I can drop Verizon phone service will be a day to celebrate, they have extracted 10's of thousands of dollars from me simply because they can. I don't expect it to be a free service, but as a Gen1 beta dish holder I would be accepting of a 'We hung in their from the beginning discount'. Now that does start to bring up the single point of failure concern, but to get rid of Verizon I am willing to let it go for a while.

      You're delusional if you think your $120 a month for internet will also cover your cell phones. Especially if cell companies like AT&T go under. As they get closer to being single provider, which FTC won't allow, the price will get higher and higher. Don't think Elon will do this for the same amount he is getting today.

      LOL, like Dish Networks. they are building a Wireless Carrier Network. Starlink wont be taking over ground based anytime soon. Hell they cant even handle the massive traffic that is currently the mobile network aka wireless infrastructure. Of course if we all want to go backward to say 250 kbs data then sure... Lets go backward. Please let me know when starling can handle 310 million (310,000,000) mobile phones, tablets, cars with data so forth an so on at 500 mbps otherwise ....

    I have lived in the rural NC mountains for 25 years. I still do not have cell service. I was one of the first to get Starlink in this area. I fired DirecTV, SiriusXM and downgraded HughesNet (as a backup to Starlink) I can’t wait until I can fire Verizon & Frontier (landline) if Starlink can connect my cellphone to a satellite. My expenses for a landline, satellite TV & Verizon (which doesn’t even work in my home) make my monthly Starlink expense look like a drop in the bucket. The Telcos have have 25 years to provide basic internet and cell service to potential rural customers in this area and could have cared less. I hope their day of reckoning is coming soon. 🙏

    I think many people are missing the point. While sat2phone will be revolutionary in many areas with little to no coverage, it can't replace terrestrial cell systems where there are high population densities, deep inside building coverage or high performance speeds. It doesn't matter how many satellites there are in space, they can never provide the same amount of data throughput as a high density cell phone system can do based on the current mobile phone technology and spectrums they use. As it is most cell phone networks in high population density areas suffer congestion during busy periods and that is with towers less than a mile apart and from towers that can provide speeds in the 100's of Mbps per user.
    Another major problem with relying on sat2phone communications is that the battery will go flat more quickly as the handsets will have to use more power when they are sending a signal to the satellite. The handset will also have to operate in higher power modes when receiving larger data sets as the data won't flow as quickly.

    • @carlleon1604
      @carlleon1604 Před 5 měsíci +8

      Totally agree with this assessment. Sat to cell is revolutionary, and will make a huge difference in remote areas. There may be some (limited) indoor capabilities, but nothing like we have with regular cell service. This isn't going to run AT&T and Verizon (or TMo) out of the market by any stretch of the imagination. There is no way sat to cell can provide the density of coverage in populated areas, and also as CraigFryer noted, cell batteries won't last very long at all trying to communicate with satellite links. This is an interesting development, but it isn't earth shattering.

      it’s called physics. The energy required to transmit from a handheld to a satellite might be achievable but only for a few minutes from today’s phones. That’s why iridium phones are so big. It’s not a viable or replacement for what people expect from a cell phone.

    I'm a trucker, and I do see new towers going up from time to time. These are typically in new developments; in my case, I see them in areas where new warehouses and business parks have been built. However, most older developments are already saturated with cellular signals, so no new towers are needed.
    T-Mobile has definitely been busy converting the old Sprint WiMax towers over to LTE/5G. All three major carriers are represented in my truck (ATT and VZW phones, TMO on my tablet), and I'm seeing more VZW dead spots than TMO. (Why two phones? No carrier covers everywhere, but everywhere is covered by someone.)
    As for satellite use indoors... GPS is rated for outdoor use only. However, a true GPS receiver (and not that chip in your phone) will often work indoors. I suspect that the indoor testing of SpaceX cellular is to find just what problems that it has. Dealing with the FCC is much like a game of "Mother May I?".
    And Elon, where is that long-promised Starlink antenna for tractor trailers? And I'm not talking about that $2500 thing...

The phones must also be able to connect to the satellites, same as connect to the cell towers. Outdoor or Indoor depends primary on the frequencies/band. It might be also possible to connect to stationary ground tower in some regions (to serve tunnels or other topologies.

  • @franklentz5388
    @franklentz5388 Před 5 měsíci +4

    That’s all well and good, but Starlink is an extremely vulnerable system.
    The area around the planet in space is cluttered with debris, spacex even included collision avoidance into Starlink. When Starlink gets close to having 40k satellites into LEO what would be the result if a rouge nation sent a couple dozen rockets into that altitude and detonated them?
    Take for instance a Patriot missile, the warhead is nothing more than a winding of hard steel with an explosive core that when detonated creates a huge ball of wire tangle, it does this in the path of what it is attempting to stop, it’s pretty effective in stopping its target.
    So a rogue nation like North Korea takes some of their rockets and spreads out a number of debris fields that the Starlink satellites just cannot avoid, as satellite collisions begin their debris will soon create massive altitudes where it will take years to recover from.
    Starlink, for me works great, but if we allow it to become something that drives terrestrial communications out of business a day will come when there will be a price to pay.
    Do some research on why the US ended testing of space interceptor systems, about the debris those few tests created that are still causing space hazards.

    • @arturoeugster7228
      @arturoeugster7228 Před 5 měsíci +1

      At 320 km the debris would de orbit quickly, at any other altitude there is no collision hazard, In non circular orbits the collision hazard is negligible. Do some orbital mechanics, the surface of one orbital altitude is 510 000 000 km², there crossing orbits are the biggest collision hazzard ; non circular orbits cross the entire sphere only twice every 90 minutes. once the orbits decay aerodynamically they are no longer a factor.

    Back in the 90's when I first had GPS navigation on my laptop (Before smart phones) in my car, I had to have an antenna mounted on the outside of my car for it to work. Maps had to be predownloaded. Later I as able to use GPS navigation on my dell PDA with a Bluetooth GPS receiver that had to be placed up against the front windshield. Fastforward to today. I can now use GPS navigation on my cellphone with my cellphone anywhere in my car and even inside my house and building. Very seldom do I get a message that it can't detect a GPS signal. So if I can currently receive GPS satellite signals the only hurdle is sending a signal to a satellite.

      Guess what, if you’re in a large commercial multi story structure, and that building has good cell connection it probably has a repeater system in place.
      I previously worked for a large federal government entity, we were issued cellphones as it was critical to have to maintain connectivity. The contract for the cell service changed from one provider to another, we all had to turn in our phones and get new ones. The first thing that occurred was about half the phones had no service when inside various buildings. The new provider within a month had installed repeaters where needed and we had connections almost everywhere, the locations where service was lost were locations that basically were cloaked intentionally.

    We had a tower near us that was used by AT&T and TMobile. But there was some conflict with the tower owner so AT&T had another company put one up across the street that they now use. But this is a fluke, IMO, and you're right. I'd say the vast majority of cell towers in the USA are already placed.
    I talked with a guy who said that these towers are already overloaded because they cannot handle the demand and the telecos are not upgrading because of the extreme cost to do so. And you can go into most small to medium sized towns around lunchtime and you won't be able to surf the web and may not be able to make calls.
    It's a perfect opening for Starlink Cellular. There will be lawsuits from the telecos I'm sure, but Starlink may put them out of business just like they are doing with Hughesnet and Dish Network.
    I enjoy your videos because I have had Starlink since June of 2022. It just keeps getting faster with less and less downtime. My only other choices in my rural area are terrible and I see more and more people here getting Starlink.

I currently live in rural New Mexico and am still using “4G” because the local providers don’t think we can support the cost of the upgrade. Hey maybe Elon’s Starlink team has already thought of that and they can do “6G” with a software patch. Needless to say a great deal of thought needs before we jump off the deep end and retire the land based towers. Starlink's stated intention is to supplement terrestrial cellular not replace it, and to provide that reliable cell-tower-in-the-sky only where there is no terrestrial signal. New Zealand for example has cell coverage for 98.5% of where Kiwis live, work and play, but this equates to only 30% of the landmass, so direct-to-cell will be a game changer for the 1.5% of Kiwis outside terrestrial coverage. Your cellphone should always default to a terrestrial cell site, and hopefully should seamlessly switch to Starlink and back again as the user moves out of and back in terrestrial coverage.

    The antennas in Starlink sattelites are phase array, aka software radio similar to the radars in jet fighters. I think they the frequency they use could be all software defined, meaning they might be able to change the service they offer just with a firmware update on the satellite.
    Go from internet to cell 5G to military scanning for ennemy communication and position.
    Once they have their array in orbit startlink is not going to have many limits beyond what the physic dictate.

    I am not too worried at this point, I think Starlink has to worry a bit and have a Plan B as well if the Kessler Syndrome happens. With that many sats, its bound to happen at some point. 👍🤠 I think the transponder cell size will have some severe congestion if it takes hold. Just look at how the "internet" service in congested area work and are affected by congested and adoption. That is why mobile customers are charged so much. I guarantee that there would be huge data caps that would have to be put into place to support this at scale.
