  • Fort Efford is a former 19th-century Fort, built as a result of the Royal Commission on National Defence of 1859. It was built to defend the landward approaches to the North East of Plymouth. This was part of an overall scheme for the defence of the Royal Naval Dockyard at Devonport, Plymouth. They were known as Palmerston Forts after the Prime Minister who championed the scheme.
    Efford Emplacement in 2009.
Designed by Captain (later Maj General) Edmund Frederick Du Cane,[1] it was built by George Baker and Company and finished by the Royal Engineers. It was armed with 21 guns, some of which flanked the nearby Laira Battery. To house part of the Forts' Garrison a barrack block to house five officers and 108 men was built within the rear section of the Fort. In the 1890s a moveable armament shed was built on the parade ground to house two 5-inch Breech Loading guns.
By the early 1900s the Fort had become obsolete as a defensive position and was disarmed. During the Second World War it was used for ammunition storage. It was sold by the War Office in 1961.[2] It was Grade II listed in 2003.[3] It has been used for storage by the Showman's Guild for many years.

I went there twice with my mates when I was around 10/11 years old (28 years ago now). We managed to get in through the spiral staircase entrance at the very top, which was sadly filled in and cemented over the 3rd time we went back. I vow to take my kids there someday!

Ex UK Military here. The number and depth of tunnels around the UK are many. Including railway stations and storage for machines and equipment. In some networks you can go 20 miles between entrances.

Those hooks all over the place would’ve been for hanging hammocks for the soldiers’ berthing during times of conflict. During peacetime, there were enough barracks facilities for the minimal garrison supporting the fort, but when the fort was under combat conditions the garrison would have been greatly increased and not all the soldiers would have fit into the permanent accommodation, so hammocks would’ve been strung up in pretty much every available space to accommodate them at night, then taken down during the day to resume normal operations. Some places, lots of Swiss bunkers and air raid shelters that weren’t in constant use in particular, have a bunch of fold-down cots like super low budget Murphy beds in addition to hanging points for hammocks, but you’ll notice similar systems in the majority of forts that expected to have a large number of troops stationed there during conflict. Some of the hooks in the actual gun rooms would’ve been for servicing the guns and moving ammunition and powder around and such as well.

Matt there are a whole range of forts like that around Plymouth. Some easier than others. Most unused. Scraesdon is a beauty and also many many steps! Ernesettle (closest to the river Tamar) is great to get in and very untouched. I first did it aged 8 !!!! Many have dry moats.

Each casemate had a cannon which traversed on the curved rail. The rings are for the ropes. All done manually by the crew. I presume the rooms either side are for powder and shot. Black powder is very volatile so no lamps In those rooms.

I travelled with some doing the tarmac, but they are a lot harder to meet.
