The time when I met Dr K Part 2! We were in King's Cross Underground Station earlier in the day • Do You Know Boogie Woo... and had a jam on the Yamaha #Platform88 piano but it had 2 dead keys!
Brendan suggested that we should try and find a working piano. The St Pancras ones were occupied so we went to Tottenham Court Road. Guess what! The pedal was broken too!
I loved the sessions with Dr K - he is amazing, and so kind. Very supportive, and helped me a lot.
It's funny, he knew I was nervous - but knew exactly how to help me! I'm shy, so sometimes say not sure when I probably can!
He asked if I knew Mary Poppins Chim Chim Cher-ee - I said yes, but I meant I knew the song to sing, not to play! But I play by ear anyway, so just went for it.
Then!!! Brendan went straight into Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! I didn't know he was going to do that - so had to catch up and jumped into it! Another song that I hadn't played, but went for it!
I love the public reactions - especially when you see it in people's faces! There are so many - but the ones that stand out to me is the lady in the cream jacket at 5:18 who's face goes into a "what is going on?" and then her mouth opens wider in amazement. Then the lady in the cream coat at 5:41 who reacts when I do that little trill

Such a honour to have met up with Mr Boogie Woogie himself - Dr K Brendan Kavanagh! It was just so much fun jamming out and letting it all go! Whilst I am doing Boogie Woogie for my diploma, I love the freeform improvisation. The Mary Poppins thing was fun - I knew the songs from the movie, but never played them before today! So it was straight into Chim Chim Cher-ee - and then bang! Literally no notice at all into Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Heck it was fun though! So - now for those that had asked - Do You Know Boogie Woogie? What do you think?

oh you're gonna hate my reaction... some places your "melodic intuition" is better than Brendan's and he could learn from you! no disrespect to him intended with that, he's got some really great skills and been at it much longer. you're also transitioning/transposing into different keys kinda "outside the box", VERY NICE!

I don't know how many dozens of times I have watched this video Cole, It still amazes me that without any previous rehearsal you can sit down at the side of Brendan Kavanagh and duet two quite complicated songs from Mary Poppins. The crowd are standing there with their mouths open and rightly so. Whatever it is that you are eating or drinking that gives you the talent we all know you have, keep on with it. Hi Amy! Thank you, just wanted to say that this was never practiced. I never met Dr K/Brendan before that day. We did play earlier on another piano (see Part 1) and came over here to look for a better piano. In fact that second Mary Poppins song he didn't even tell me he was going to play it, or what it was even going to be. I had never played it before but of course knew what it sounded like from the movie. Was a bit surprised but just joined in and tried to catch up!
