2015 VW GTI Forge Twintercooler Install MK7

  • I installed a Forge Twintercooler on my 2015 GTI PP. The kit was actually really good and has provided a lot of cooling. I filmed the install and put the original video up but then went back and made some install changes and then did some edits to the original video. This is the new edited video.
    One of the reasons I made the edits was because I had to fight with the driver side twintercooler hose. I originally bent the recirc pump bracket to get the hose to fit, but after driving for a day and checking it again, the hose was able to bend under the pump bracket after I straightened the bracket back out. I think the hose was just warped from shipping and once it heated up it was a perfect fit.
    The only thing I didn't like was that the new mounting point for the MFD air temperature sensor is not a good location. Its hot out here in the summers usually staying around the 90's to low 100's. With the temp sensor in the proposed twintercooler spot, on a day that was in the mid 90's, the MFD was wildly changing from the high 90's all the way to 118F. I ended up making a bracket to move the sensor out to the side of the intercooler and more into the fresh airstream coming in. Now the MFD temps are stable.
    Also, the kit has you pull the air diverters that force the air coming in from the front of the car into the radiator and stock intercooler. I went back and trimmed these pieces and re-installed them. All of these changes are in this edited video.
    Otherwise, the intercooler itself has a very good strong build with nice heavy welds. It seems to be mounted very strong with the hardware provided with the kit.
    I have logged the IATs and when it was in the low 80's outside the IATs would pull down to ~100F on acceleration with air being forced across the intercooler. This intercooler has really helped with heat soak but when I have the AC on MAX and its hot out, I still can tell I have varying amounts of timing being pulled. I am really happy with this upgrade but think I will add an upgraded stock location intercooler as well.

    7:18 there is a little removable panel down and to the right of where you are unscrewing the bumper. If you open it up you can disconnect the fog lights from there before you pull the bumper off. Thanks for the video, it was very helpful while i was working on my car.

    I'm planning to get a mk7 GTI Sport 2017, i'm looking at the CTS FMIC intercooler and they have one for the OEM replacement. I will go stage 2 stay there for a while then maybe my limit would be IS38. Another alternative is go R intercooler right away for stage 2 and then when i go IS38 go with this twincooler. How is it running now? any good?

    it said to fit the intercooler with the pipes on it and then drill. if you followed those directions you probably wouldn't have crimped the hose.

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  Před 8 lety

      +samartz If you are running the stock ECU tune you don't need to do anything. If you are running most of the canned tunes you will most likely not need a retune unless your tunner offers a special tune that requires an intercooler.

    Love that a guy of your age is into the moding scene, thanks for making the video's you do. Gives me idea's for when my 2016 GTI reaches the one year old mark.
    Wonder how much of a difference the twin intercooler makes on a factory Tune.

      @RadFox1320  Před 8 lety +1

      +MechRider89 I didn't notice any change on the dash gauge. The AC still worked great and it gets hot here. The addition of the twintercooler should help with heat soak and keep your power levels up.

    • @MechRider89
      @MechRider89 Před 8 lety

      interesting, wonder how much longer spool time is with the twintercooler.... its a lot of space to fill.
      What was the price of the kit if you don't mind me asking

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  Před 8 lety +1

      With the stock turbo and with a downpipe there is no problem with spooling, at least in my opinion. I worried about it too, the extra volume it has to fill to build the boost but the downpipe allows the turbo to spool ridiculously fast. This was of course with a stage 1 and 2 tune. You should be able to find the kit for around 600.

    • @MechRider89
      @MechRider89 Před 8 lety

      $600 ain't to shabby, Kinda wish the Canadian dollar was stronger like it was in 2011.... get raped buying from the states and Europe now a days we do.

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  Před 8 lety

      +Vanneker I saw strong acceleration even with the AC on, as long as the car keeps moving air across the intercooler. Before the intercooler, if the AC was on, the car would not accelerate strong when it was hot out. I am at +5000 ft elevation, high-desert, and when its 100F outside the altitude density is usually +8000 ft. Most cars are very slow up here. Check out my R drag videos and see how slow most muscle cars are up here even when its cold outside.

  • @KitrinomavrosTimoros
    @KitrinomavrosTimoros Před 8 lety

    Doesn't the twintercooler reduce airflow to radiator, because it sits in front of it? I'm looking to buy the same for my Scirocco R. Great video by the way!

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  Před 8 lety +2

      I don't think you need to worry about the radiator so long as it can still pull air across it. If you think about the intercooler, it's going to be raising the air temperature (only when boosting hard) of some of the air that reaches the radiator, but this is no different than a warmer days air. Make sure to keep your air diverters where possible. I can tell you that my AC is still amazingly ice cold on days that were right under 100F and that the cars water temperature appears completely normal.

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  Před 7 lety +1

      The inter cooler was helpful while I had the car. I traded the car in for a 2016 Golf R DSG because I was tired of the traction and launch issues of the GTI. FWIW, the GTI was a terrific car with zero factory issues, amazing fit and finish, wonderful and fun to drive.

    Im considering getting a FMIC, would you recommend it over a factory replacement? Also, what happens to the old intercooler? Is it just dead weight on the car?

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  Před 8 lety +1

      +Paul Wiest you are in a MK7 GTI, right? You could probably buy a used Golf R stock intercooler for cheap and it has 30% more size than the GTI stock. The twintercooler that I installed is in addition to the stock intercooler, so both the stock and new front mount are hooked up together. They have been making these twintercoolers for years and they do work and can drop the intake air temperature down around 20 degrees, for me it would drop 40 degrees during hard acceleration. I am high elevation and adding the twintercooler allowed me to run my AC when it was very hot out and not experience drastic timing loss like I did with only the stock intercooler. The twintercooler is inexpensive and easy to install. I talked to several people at high elevation and or high temp places that were using the twintercooler and everyone talked great about it, so I decided to try it.

    • @paulwiest8167
      @paulwiest8167 Před 8 lety

      Rad Fox Thanks for your reply. 40 degrees drop is awesome! I know of the Rolf R intercooler upgrade and there is no denying its a cost effective mod. Good to know, I was hoping the FMIC would utilize both. I live in florida and my GTI is black and thats just no bueno. Im looking at the CTS FMIC, I'm not sure, do you know if it utilizes the stock intercooler as well?

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  Před 8 lety

      I am pretty sure the CTS is a standalone unit, it is not like the twintercooler. Twin = Two intercoolers. Also, I wanted to explain when I saw the 40C drop. I did a bunch of 1st through 4th gear full throttle runs. The temps would drop the 40 degrees when I was in 3rd. As I neared redline in 4th the temps would start coming back up near the 20 degrees.

      You made me laugh when I read this. We all have to start somewhere. You should have seen my first car. I bought every racing how to book I could find and started trying things out. I had several failures but I kept trying. It's best to start with little projects and build your skill up. Once you can rebuild an engine and transmission without it failing you can do anything.

      Intercoolers don´t give HP they just prevent your car from loosing boost when reaching high temps so the cooling is much more efficient

    just go with the upgraded APR

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  Před 8 lety +1

      +Steve Cuahuizo on my R, I will first be going with the APR intercooler. If it's not enough I will be adding another. If you notice all of the tests with these replacement intercoolers are not with the AC on, and they are not at high elevation, and they are not at 100F or higher air temps. These are my typical conditions, and they saturate the stock intercooler location. You do realize that the stock intercooler is sandwiched between the radiator and condensor? The stock location is very good if you never run the AC, but if you do run the AC, the lower FM with something like the twintercooler will make a very noticeable improvement in cooling.

  • @redlew012

      +Paul Wiest he prolly doesn't like the badass stripes I custom designed to match the basic pattern of the VW sirocco, but also chose colors (blue chrome, solid red) that accentuated the cars looks. I had so many people come up to me, or drive up to me at a light and tell me how awesome the car looked. When I would go to the dealer people would come in and ask if the car was for sale. People were also taking pictures all the time. I really liked the look but it drew too much attention.

    • @robles
      @robles Před 8 lety

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  Před 8 lety +2

      Lol! Admit it, you are just a hater of stripes! I guess you only prefer stock cars as they are made and sold from the factory in your particular county. Boring! Why are you looking up modifications if you are so against them? Better not put an R intercooler on a GTI, cuz it didn't come from the factory that way! Lol!
      The sad thing is you don't really know anything about MK7 GTI stripes, because if you did, you would know that almost all of the initial MK7 GTI apprentice cars that were only shown in Europe have stripes. You wouldn't know this because you only accept what is in front of your face at your local dealer. Again, BORING! And yes, there there are several with similar stripe layout to my design and the sirocco.
