The term "mini Masterpiece" is really coming into play now

The Studio Series 86 line is like an extension of the War For Cybertron: Kingdom line.
I think they just distributed every idea for the SS 86 line into everything. Going back to Siege, Springer was perfect. Arcee, Starscream, and everything Quintesson from ER are perfect, or as close as could be. Cyclonus looks amazing in Kingdom, and I've no doubt Galvatron is going to be every bit as good. The SS line has thus far picked up most of the rest, and I'll bet they will finish off whatever's left in the SS line.

Yeah for me too! This line has the potential to be the best G1 line of all time
For 30 bucks, this thing is a damn BARGAIN! It's got so much love and detail put in it. It also looks just like the movie, and the amount of acessories in it are amazing. You can get a good amount of poses with this bad boy. 9/10, a shining example of a Miniature Masterpiece.
Another fantastic review again! He is a truly stunning version of hot rod. The first wave of the 86 line is killing it so far!

I cannot believe this is a $30 figure. The quality looks OUTSTANDING. My only real complaint is the yellow hinge on the roof of the car, I think it looks fine on the legs, like a highlight. Either way, he’ll looks super great on the shelf next to my Quintesson Pit with the rest of the studio series.
In mexico i worth $1960 MXN so maybe for you is 30 dollars but for mexico its a lot more but still its worth the price

It's a voyager, just like astrotrain is a leader and cliffjumper is a deluxe, it doesn't matter what you think they are, what matters is what Hasbro officially calls them

Man, I have such fond memories of Hot Rod... I had the original toy as a kid, and the '86 movie was one of the media that made the biggest impact on me back then. This, I may pick up if I see it in stores.
As a Transformers collector from the beginning, I'm confident in saying this is one of the greatest figures Takara/Hasbro have ever produced. A sentiment you make clear throughout the review (well done).
Also, it appears we've still got Transformers fans working out their catharsis. If you're ripping Hot Rod for his [heroic] actions you've missed not only the actual context of *that* scene, but the entire movie was apparently lost on you. Maybe listen to the soundtrack for further healing.
Anyhow, back to the figure. So nice, I pre-ordered twice! One for robot mode, and one for vehicle mode to display beside it. A huge accomplishment all around.
Man he's simply amazing. Checks all the boxes. Vehicle mode, robot mode, fun transformation and decent acessories.
After watching JohnnyFlash's Nemesis Prime series, im now quite fond of Hot Rod. This may be the best toy of him since the TF Animated line.

We are living in the golden age of g1 toys. "Masterpiece on a budget" is fast becoming a meme. The next step is them rebooting g1 as a cg cartoon with updated robot design.
Yeah. Wouldn’t it be weird if they made a Netflix exclusive cartoon? Maybe they could focus on the war between the Autobots and deceptions before they crash into earth. What if they also tied g1 into beast wars into the third season? The voice acting might be flawed, but it would be awesome if that happened.

'Mini masterpiece' has been thrown around in recent years, but this is truly worthy of the badge. Knew I had to preorder him and Grimlock as soon as they released, and sure enough they were out of stock on every online retailer here in the UK within 12 hours. I completely agree he is one of the best mainline transformers ever. Period.

This is such a cool figure! Hot Rod is one of my favorite Transformers and the G1 is one of my favorite movies ever, I love everysingle thing and accessory they included this makes me incredibly happy! ❤️
At first I didn't care too much to get this figure, but after a more in-depth look at him... WOW, TAKE MY MONEY! (But not before I buy Grimlock)
I think whilst hot rod maybe very good at this point, Grimlock I think may be the best
i can not wait for that grimlock, y’know what would be neat? if you could like swap the eyes between red and blue for the dino mode

Excellent review and Phenomenal figure...I didn't know this figure can do so much I'm so glad to have this figure, my Transformers collection is by far the Best of my entire Toy room .
Would have loved to see reverse transformation but amazing review non the less, so excited to pick this guy up in April!
Reverse transformations are something I have tried to implement into reviews but the feedback has been that it just inflates the reviews. Maybe I’ll go back to doing the transformation from whatever mode the figure comes packaged in

Great review!! I'm really looking forward to this one. I like the way that between Siege, ER, Kingdom, and the SS86 line, that they've managed to create just about everyone from the 86 movie perfectly. About the only thing missing is Wreck-Gar at this point. The biggest problem with these figures is that they're all cool enough for me to have to worry about my finances, haha!!

That transformation is... wow. It looks complicated but immensely satisfying.
This is mind-blowing. I feel bad for anyone who collected transformers prior to the WFC line and this line.
I started collecting during Earthrise!
Good God. I've long since thought that deluxe class and deluxe scale has given us some of the most solid and well-engineered main retail figures, but dear lord this is a level of quality I didn't think possible. Siege Spinister, Earthrise Smokescreen and Earthrise Hoist are all great figures, but this guy, THIS GUY is on a whole other level.
All those features and there's no cavity to place the matrix in? LOL oh well, still an amazing figure. Can't wait to get one!
Remember, this is Hot Rod and not Rodimus Prime.

@@The_Crimson_Shogun Honestly I'm just being silly. I mean, Optimus would've been a boss with the matrix against Unicron, no doubt! But truthfully, Hot Rod gets a bad rap... He was trying to help, knows he made a pretty bad mistake doing so, spends the whole rest of the movie trying so hard to make up for it and take care of everyone, and really does come in to his own as a leader before they even get off Quintessa. Ultra Magnus is interesting... in the movie he makes a few mistakes, but in the show he's pretty infallible. Ultimately he probably would've been a better leader than Rodimus Prime, as far as Season 3 goes.
Anyway, all I'm sayin is if you're going to release a Hot Rod with a matrix, it'd be cool to be able to place it inside him. Otherwise it's probably gonna get lost in a box along with all the other accessories I toss in there. :D
Still really looking forward to this figure, as well as the whole SS86 line!

Ok so I can’t tell if g1 is transformers season 1 and season 2 and since season 3 and season 4 take place after the movie, is season 3 and four G2?
I own mp-28 and the value with this figure is pretty amazing it’s smaller sure but it’s almost like a little masterpiece great accessories and pose ability improved on some of the design even much less backpack car mode looks great no weird snappy bits on the chest neck his pipes look great Has a welder !!! And the saw holy cow all it’s missing is a Daniel not only did I pick this up but now I’m gonna keep an eye on this line

Studio Series '86 Hot Rod is fyaaaaaaa!! His design in robot mode is sick as heck, I. Love. It!!!
Such an amazing figure. I just picked him up at Walmart (finally restocked!). The one con about this figure (no pun intended) is that a silver part on one of the exhausts snaps off extremely easily, so be weary of that. Doesn’t affect transformation though. All in all 10000/10 figure.
Damn, I'm not a Hotrod nor G1 fan but seeing this review I just want to buy and play with it all day :D The transformation and the design is awesome!
Love the group shot with Prime, Bumblebee and Springer. He definitely fits in well with all the new figures.

You put the blast effect upside-down on the exhaust. It actually has two holes so it can peg into the top two pipes. 2:24
Hot damn, this is legit a mini-masterpiece. I don't mean that he's a well-done figure in CHUG scale; I mean the thought and care that went into making this figure genuinely rivals that of both official masterpiece figures as well as any 3P masterpiece-style Hot Rod. If every single character can get this level of... love, I guess, buy simply being priced one class higher than they'd normally be, I will gladly pay $30.00 for a deluxe.
The engineering is fantastic. Might have to get this version for my 3 year old(trying to get him into Transformers). Excellent review as always.

At first, I was on the fence because of faux chest piece but after saw all the gimmick of robot mode, I can't wait to get one.
Yeah honestly it’s something that you can easily look past when you see what else the figure has to offer
Dude... it was so enjoyable to watch you transform this guy. Like, it looks like there's some substance to the transformation without it being clunky and awkward like Siege Springer was.
All that and there's no obvious hollow points! I am really excited for this :)

I bought Hot Rod today. He's everything I was hoping for. I hope to get a G1 original at some point, but this will hold me over for a while. It's definitely better than the Power of the Primes version I got recently.

i've cracked it. the reason they look so good is because the engineering can be considered Real Grade level similar to that of gunpla. Compact, robust, fully articulated, and highly detailed.

I personally intend on displaying the vehicle mode with the blasters on the hood, as it imitates the vintage Targetmasters!
This is my first Studio Series 86 purchase. I love the character and I had to get it.

He's definitely a budget MP figure. Personally, I still like how MP Hot Rod looks but I feel like they could take some cues from this figure for a newer MP Hot Rod.

The blasters never matched, these look very similar to the original ones.
Excellent review! I will definitely be buying this figure. This SS86 line is a whole new era and could potentially change the HASBRO mainline G-1 characters forever, as now HASBRO can potentially put out mainline figures with engineering that is on par with MP scale at the mainline price point. This is very exciting.
It may not have nearly a quarter of the steps, but dear primus, this guy makes MP-36 look like an action master.
Hotrod is one of my favourite characters, my only gripe with this figure is that he's red instead of magenta , amazing figure though
I can't wait until these come out for sale. They seem to be the best representations of the characters for a reasonable price so far.
I think the one down side for this figure is the hinge that is yellow stands out on top of the vehicle mode, they should have made it red instead. Other than than its an amazing figure!

This review speaks the truth. I've been into TF since '84 and Hot Rod has always looked like crap, Masterpiece included. This figure is 100% what we've been dreaming about for over thirty years. I haven't been this excited about a Transformers figure since MP-01
I really hope we'll be getting a Studio Series 86 Rodimus and Galvatron eventually.

This is literally a mini masterpiece. It has a lot of accessories, you can barely tell it transforms, and looks awesome. I really hope studio series will make a G-1 Optimus Prime. ( But if studio series makes a G-1 Optimus, I think that they will just reuse the Earthrise Optimus Prime mold. It would be nice to have a better new mold)
