  • GLHF w Matt Heafy is brought to you by my good friend John W Dill Trial Lawyer. John has been a longtime BJJ partner of mine at GBNO in Orlando. While John practices in Orlando, he is around to serve the entire country when possible.
Please don’t hesitate to call or email for consultation on what you may need.
Please visit johnwdill.com now for all your legal needs.
Welcome to the very first GLHF with Matt Heafy. (Good luck, have fun - for those of you who don’t play video games)
The plan here is to have some wonderful chats with some of my favorite people in the world.
Our first guest is an incredible person named Jared Dines. He virally set the Internet on fire multiple times in his career with fantastic satire; a commentary that represents the sub-worlds of music fans and musicians all too accurately.
Jared recently filled in for me when I had to leave our biggest North American tour to be there for the birth of my twins. Jared, Howard, Johannes, and my Trivium band members saved the tour.
I know all of you know Jared for his hilarity and antics; but I wanted to give the world a glimpse into the amazing man I know. A devoted friend, a workhorse of his empire, and a talented as hell musician.
Without further adieu, the world premiere of GLHF with Matt Heafy, featuring Jared Dines.

I absolutely love Matt's honesty here. Hit hard. I remember them saying they we gonna be the next Metallica. I believed them. Hearing Ascendency when it first came out, it's hard to deny Trivium had what it took. Then the Crusade hit and my god the hate flowed from EVERYONE. I was working in a machine shop at the time. My tool box was covered with Trivium patches, stickers etc. Machine shops tend to have quite a few metal heads in them and they messed with my tool box and me soooo much. "Trivium sucks. They will fade fast." "Listen to real metal like *insert another metal band here*".
I always stuck by them as Matt is my age and he was doing what I wished I could be doing. Dimebag Darrell made me want to pick up the guitar (and Papa Het). But Matt made me want to master it. Through the years it's been an absolute pleasure to listen to them evolve, learn, adapt and crush it. Every album is great in its own way. Are we gonna get another Ascendency? No. Just like we won't get another MoP from Metallica. They aren't the same people any more. They don't feel the same way.
But we will always get something new and great. Especially the last album and the recent singles released for the new album. It's gonna be it's OWN masterpiece, not beholden to their past but opening themselves to the wonderful future ahead.
Got on my own tangent there, sorry. But thanks Matt for sharing this video and thanks for all the music you all have created. It's lifted me up, made me cry, empowered me, defined and and most importantly it's shown me that it's ok to just be YOU and to screw what everyone else says or thinks.
    Thank you.

I 100% agree with you. I'm a bit younger than you but I've been a fan of Trivium since Shogun. I wont say The Crusade because at that time I was like, "Ha, look at these dweebs trying to be Metallica (Which ya know, they kinda were, but that's the labels fault not theirs). I was floured by Shogun when I heard it, because it sounded like TRIVIUM. After that, I went out and bought Ascendancy on CD and watched the live DVD that came with it and was like "Wow, these guys are gonna be big". Next thing I know their on the Jager stage at Mayhem 2009. They were amazing. Super in your face and fast and lots of attitude. That was it. Trivium fan for life \m/

Man, I love these guys. They've definitely found their sound in Shogun. Completely ditching the Metallica sound besides the harsh vocals.

Tbh I agree I was one of the fans that complained about the crusade album, I honestly belive they were not a metalcore band to begin with they just came out around the time metalcore was rising up into mainstream but they originally had thrash/heavy metal/ death metal styles and just grabbed on the modern sound witch was metalcore at the time , I honestly kick myself for not giving that album a chance but I was young and dumb followed the trend like alot of us were and then I eventually left the metalcore scene cus it just got played out to me, everyone sounded the same after awhile and I ended up on the deathcore scene. This album was ahead of its time I wouldint put them up with metallica I would put them up with iron maiden! Cuz after finally getting to listend to that album that's what it reminded me of, I'm honestly not surprised they got album of the year or band of the year. that year everyone thought they sold out when they changed up their style alot of people say they would of being praised if it was released today, I say fuck that! if anything metalcore didn't deserve that masterpiece to begin with, now i try not to label bands in genres cus it's clear to me bands like this are artist, that album was pure art! It's ironic the album that turned me away originally from them was the same album that brought me back to them 😊🤘

Im guessing all that "Next Metallica" hype was drummed up by the media. I can kind of see where those comparison where being drawn from. Either way, they did end up coming into their own, and dominating their lane.

I am forever in debt to Jared Dines. When he got on tour with Trivium, I had already heard of the band, but I never actually listened to the music, and I probably would've been this guy asking Matt to a picture of me and Jared. While watching his vlogs, I thought "hey that sounds pretty sick, I should listen to them". I began by listening to TSATS, and 15 seconds in I was blown away. I could I possibly have missed out on such fantastic music? There began my journey into Trivum's discography, which was (and still is) essentially just me listening to each album at least once a week. Seeing you live in July in Lyon was the best concert I ever attended, everything was just so perfect. I love the Trivium community, everyone is just so cool, and I love the Twitch streams (even tho I wish I could watch them more often, but I have so much to do in school). Listening to Trivium also helped motivate me to try even harder to become somewhat of a decent guitarist (still a long way to go, I'm afraid). I am proud to call myself a Trivium fan (also the new album is sounding absolutely killer so far!!!!).
So thank you to Jared for introducing me to you, thank you Matt for being such an awesome and inspiring human being, and thank you Trivium for putting out such good music.
(sorry for the long ass text)

Forever years ago, I was in a record store in Tampa that I ventured to every Saturday. I knew one of the guys that worked there from seeing him at shows and my weekly trips. We started giving each other bands to check out after a while. One Saturday, he hands me a used CD and says "Check these kids out" and it was 'Ember to Inferno'. I loved it and so the next show that Trivium was playing was a club in Orlando(maybe Firestone or so) so I went. Out comes guys that all looked like they were 15 but played like they were 30. I've been an evangelist for the band ever since. I'm unbelievably proud of the success they've had I wish them more in the future. The proverbial 'local boys make good'.

Competition in markets and communities really does bring up everything around, whether its hyping or just helping your local economy. It's why competition in say pharmaceuticals in the US have led to more medicine inventions and cures than pretty much anywhere. Oh Matt... I am in the UK... it was so weird how I got into Trivium.. ur right, I dont pay attention to media but they musta hated u because I think you are right up there w the best bands and frontmen ever and I only JUST got into Trivium like 5 months ago.
I have always been into metal, so getting into them in 2020 feels like: "where the f** have I been?"
I was watching a RedPill Presentation by Mark Passio, he mentioned your band name as he was giving a definition of the word Trivium... he said: "they are pretty good".. but honestly I had no idea what sort of music u were and was too lazy to sway away from my usual menu... Metallica/AV7X/Slipknot/etc.. I assumed u were like Periphery or something like that.
Then this February just gone I went to Miami for 10 days.... and I just got a urge to listen to Trivium, I got ill in Florida so was bedridden... and I just put on Vengeance Falls... wow...
Your singing harmonics, the riffs, the drums... Alex Bent! (in newer albums) Thanks for existing dude! lol u rekindled my interest in guitar... and Alex in drums....
And then, after I got back to the UK I find out you guys are from Orlando... I was like wtf? I get into your band while I'm in your state? without knowing it? haha... must have been something in the air or in the water :)
