With my obstbot tripod, my phone can follow my movements on the ice, so you are able to see what I am doing during the lesson.

This is a fantastic video, thank you. I used to be told things like "hug the circle" and would then assume those unflattering and ultimately unhelpful positions thinking I was following the instructions. 😂

This is very helpful! LTA should stop teaching the "hugging the tree" method; it had me building a bad habit and wondering why I couldn't do a forward crossover after 2 years!

Oh my goodness, all this time I thought I had to position my shoulders into the circle - I will try doing it with shoulders aligned to hips and hopefully both forward and backward crossovers will be divine!

Yea, this is basically opposite of hockey stance. My hockey coach always yelled at me to bend more

This is so interesting! But there is a rotation of the upper body towards the circle right? Would it be correct to say that we should rotate the chest inside the circle as long as the shoulders don’t drop?
Body/chest is straight, the rotation you see slightly is me being more on the edge and in my knees ☺️

You are such a BEAUTIFUL skater! I am only level 3 right now and being told to keep 'Hug the circle' just felt very forced and unnatural
I would say you’re not alone! We need to incorporate natural feelings in skating as well, so you’re so right ☺️❤️🙏
It sounds like we need to change the expression to "hug the hyperbola" so all our young skating students don't get confused
@melcheesy2320 yep! If my teacher said hug the hyperbola instead of circle I would have understood completely and never questioned it for a SECOND. Ultimately I think I'll stick to @sofabar tips
@@tarotlondon yea , i guess you would need to clarify that it's sort of a backwards hug which some people wouldn't know about since it's an extremely rare form of hugging, but kids are good at looking past that sort of thing- "backwards hug the hyperbola"
@@mechez774 We're not kids, this is adult ice skating lessons in London, and we are all taught this. I get we need to do this to pass our levels but I love the way @sofabar explains it and how natural it looks compared to feeling so forced
Do you have tips for getting a deeper outside edge (forwards and backwards)? I seem to really struggle with deepening the edges, especially maintaining the backwards outside edge
Using your knees more and trying more and more each time to get into your knees and leaning into that edge ☺️✨
1:18 when doing backwards crossovers, should your stomach be facing the circle?

my coach: you're overextending your arms 😭💀 if i think that my arms are following my hips, will that fix my overextending problem?
May I ask why for backward crossover, the back arm has to be higher?

It doesn’t have to be, but it it adds a little more length into the arms. This is how my choreographer (mom) taught me. You can also see this when Sasha Cohen skates and ice dancers. Sadly hasn’t been seen much lately 😓
