  • This video is the beginning of our discovery of Catholic waypoints in the New Orleans, Louisiana. The Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church not only is steeped in the Catholic heritage of New Orleans but also of the Jesuit order itself. We learned a little more about our faith and the early American Catholics who built the Church in Louisiana.

I found this incredible church completely by accident while touring the "fancy" hotels in New Orleans. It took my breath away, and I will always cherish my visit to it!

Beautiful video and marvelous church. I'm going to venture a guess that the architect may have drawn inspiration from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption (the Cathedral of Cordoba); the islamic-style arches here in Immaculate Conception use the same motif as the arches in the Cordoba Cathedral (alternating brick color and white marble) and the reredos also has a strong Moorish element to it. The metal security doors and quite a few other design elements are Moorish in style. What a gem!
The effort and sacrifices our forbearers in the Faith made to build fitting houses of worship in America is a story that needs to be told...keep up the great work!!

Andrew - thanks for your kind words of encouragement, they are greatly appreciated! Your guess about the architect is spot on. Fr. John Cambiaso, who was responsible for the plans and construction of the church, spent some time living in Spain where the Moorish kingdoms were in control during the 8th through the 15th centuries. He was a great admirer of the Moorish architecture and it is evident throughout the church. God bless - George & Sue
