Arnold Schwarzenegger on Letterman, June 27, 1984

- Arnold Schwarzenegger's first appearance on Dave, promoting his new film "Conan the Destroyer." Arnold had become a U.S. citizen six months earlier, so Dave tests him on U.S. history and government.
Arnold and David always had such humorously competitive interviews. Arnold got better and better at Letterman over the years and started beating him at his own game.
There will never be another Arnold Schwarzenegger
Never❤️
True but there will be people much better than him
Arnold's english is actually fucking perfect. I guess it's just the accent. I should actually question my english.
@@Jotizs he actually no longer technically HAS the accent. he can talk quite americanized now, but actually works to KEEP his thick austrian accent, because its what his fans expect.
shadowxneo: that's completely a conspiracy theory (I can tell you that as a foreigner and phonetician). But I'm a BIG fan or arnold anyway.
Umm, here's a fun fact: Most people that speak German know how to speak English. Most EUROPEANS know a great deal of English. As an American, I watch broadcasts from a handful of European news networks and MANY Europeans, regardless of the country, know English.
@@nexusvexusus4096 As someone who lived in Germany all his live i can't confirm that. There is a huge gap between english speaking Germans and english speaking Swedens.
@@palasta Swedes don't WANT to speak English. They don't teach English in school until the kids are 8 years old.
Arnie is not just very funny but also intelligent to talk back with that wit to Letterman... respect
AJisnumerouno you should re-read OP’s comment but slowly, this time.
@MKUltra He saying that Arnold is both very funny and intelligent.
@MKUltra I beg your pardon?
@MKUltra There was no grammatical error in the first place.
Nice try "tho"?
👹 Might Satan be lurking at your chamber door? 👹
his comedic delivery is great.
Arnold is a legend, highly intelligent and driven. His confidence is probably higher than anyone in history, and he continuously backs it up.
He was born with looks though. Combine that with steroids and a few bodybuilding trophies it's a no brainer as to why he has all the confidence in the world.
He was young and relatively inexperienced during these appearances, and always looked nervous.Keep in mind that I know him better than most, since the beginning of the 70s
Such a funny guy, Arnie is. His sense of humor is beyond everything I expected. Charisma and intelligence, he has everything.
I laughed my ass off He shouldve had his own late nite show
I used to think Arnold was a bit more straight edge back then and progressively got funnier into the late 80s and 90s but damn, he was always hilarious. Great sense of humour and charisma.
Had you watched Pumping Iron which was a real life documentary before he even became a movie star he was already very very funny. He has an ego but he made it funny. He's a bit like Tony Stark from the MCU
to quote commando - "WRONG!"
I followed him since the beginning of the 70s, and think he looks nervous in these early appearances. But later, he was more relaxed and funnier in the 90s
@@hardcorehouseAhoj,viděl jsem hodně Arnoldových interview ze 70 let a vždy mi připadal naprosto sebevědomý a vtipný.Omlouvám se,neumím anglicky.
He was the hottest thing in Hollywood for sometime . Not for his acting obviously but there was a niche in the film industry and Arnie filled it like no other could. 10m per movie and worth every penny. His films were guaranteed blockbusters.
also he scewed everything that walked
@@AT-cy7imWhen are the books coming out
Pretty cool to look at this knowing the first Terminator was just being filmed, so many things still to come and yet already made a name for himself
Yeah
A trip seeing him from 84
Always wished t2 was made earlier... and he wasn't a "good " terminator
I love the fact that Arnold loves to have fun in everything he does in life...👍
Arnold is hilarious
great sense of humour.
''Its not nice, but you can say it.'' how times have changed.
Free speech but not offending crap. Too much nutella people around. The can't handle the truth.
she was a wild beast...fact lol. She loved that image and played into it MANY times. Anything DEEPER than the surface of that comment is nonsense though.
Arnold has a big ego, but in a good way. What a guy.
For good reason. Who lived a better life than him?
@JoshLavian like 50 other ppl
I was born in 1984 I think I was 5 months! I'm a big fan THE GREAT
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER👑❤
Arnold was born June 30, 1947, so in this clip he's 36 going on 37 in three days.
Me too, March 17th 1984. Nice being Born when one of my favourite films was just being released (The Terminator)👍🏻
Are you John Connor?
GOD--Seeing Arnie so young is so,so,good.
He sure is a unique person & a very good actor.
From a mad keen 77yo Aussie fan.
Sir they landed on the moon when you were 25 & now you’re typing on CZcams. God bless technology.
Arnold is 'The American Dream' personified.
9:58 Letterman whispers Arnold the last two answers.
Yes, I think he was caught off guard.
I really missed those years. They were beautiful.
That man is real a self made man , he working hard and take a look around it's not so easy
An immigrant who came to America and made it big. A perfect example of the American Dream.
lol self made my ass. If it weren't for Jojo he wouldn't have had anything
Its hard to believe there was ever a time when Arnold Schwarzenegger was just filler material on late night television. Now he's THE guest that all talk show hosts wish they could have. I have to admit he was more down to Earth and humble here. He would of course go on to become a world renowned icon, a mega star, bigger than Jesus. Truly larger than life.
I ll always rem him as the Terminator. My gosh... i wasn't even born back then, still watching this i am feeling damn nostalgic.
Thank you Arnold for making my childhood awesome. Terminator was probably among the first Hollywood movie i watched as a kid... it's a classic.!
Is crazy how in the terminator he looks so serious, so intimidating, and a person you dont want to mess around with. And in real life he's super nice, friendly, and nice to talk to. 😂
The conan movies were the best thing that ever happened to me.....wish they had made the full trilogy.
So much political incorrectness, 90% of this interview couldn't air today
Those were the good times.
Awesome story teller...I was hooked🤣🤣
During the 90s with Late Show, Arnold was on my list of "guests that I don't care about but are always amazing on Letterman," along with Richard Simmons and Dan Rather.
He went from being the Terminator, to the Governator.
I love Arnold. Thanks for being an American!
These two got along really well
Arnold has perfect genetics.
damn genes ^^
And wow what a heart!
Your last fight? “...I wrestled her to the ground“ 😬😁
joinizwe - lol
1984 Terminator
Yeah. I thought Conan was like 1981 or something. Way before Terminator. But this one was Conan II. First One was C. The Barbarian. The second is this Destroyer one.
@9:11 haha! That was a nice save by Arnold! "George Washington was inaugurated on a uh... Very hot summa day."
The way he was dressed here reminds me of how handsome he looked in Kindergarten Cop. Remember all those moms going all goo goo eyed over him in that movie?
2019, and I still love 'im.
A legend 💪
You could play a great wizard! hahahaha
He became very famous soon after this.
Ikr. Everyone thought it would be a series of Conan movies that would make him famous, but later that year, this new movie called The Terminator made him a megastar. Also, his most famous line which wasn't yet know during the Conan era, "I'll be back" was going to become universally known.
He still had that Terminator 1 haircut here. I think filming was completed in June.
Arnold is the boss - always!
i love arnold!!!!!
He had already filmed the terminator by this appearance, right?
I see why Dolph Lundgren left her. She also burnt his clothes out of jealousy. She had a big personality but man she was mean. 🥺
10:10 is a crack up
Before terminator fame
When I saw the date I thought he would be promoting The Terminator.
Wish he had done conan 3.. I still think conan the destroyer is one of his best.. Gotta love Arnold!
Conan the destroyer is my favorite Arnold movie. Some people say red Sonja is Conan 3.
Love those movies too. Especially Red Sonja
@@staticmetalxbl Loved it too. He banged Brigitte Nielsen during the shooting. What a legend that Arnold
Red Sonia ruined the Conan franchise series because that film Arnold wouldn't do another Conan movie
Why?@@007beck9
If civilisation ends and we speak of a man who was a poor skinny kid from an Austrian village, with a heavy accent and a stupid name who travelled to America penniless to become Mr. Olympia several times, a movie star, the governor of California, marry a Kennedy, write amazing books, and reshape the entire culture and industry of bodybuilding.. if we speak of that story, they will say it is an urban myth. He is unbelievable.
Who are you to call people's names stupid?
That was the first of many many visits and jokes, wow
Still watching in 2019 ?
Yes sir. I was 17 when I watched this live in 1984 and now I'm 52.
Cameron Sultanov no
Arnold was hilarious until the end he became serious..
Wow, actors literally knocking people out with a stick in the 80s.
Now words are violence.
They should of made a third Conan. I've waited over 35 years, since I was 2 when Destroyer came out.
I love how they just exposed people back then
Arnold and Dave have the same gaps in their 2 front teeth.
Arnold was more genuine with the gap between his teeth and now you cannot even go to Juarez and live !
Lol
@@zerpblerd5966 and then the horse saw the gap in my teeth.
9:48
Wonder if he's joking with that slow answer considering he eventually became a governor.
he didnt even get the other two without dave whispering them on the card
No music with the guest walking in.
Arnold is showing his real personality here. True alpha male, confidence, funny, smiling, bullshitting funny stories to make others feel embarassed and women attracted and giggly.
If The Terminator was a flop. Arnold's career would have been different.
Wise Guy4U it was a flop in theaters it only gained attention in the vhs scene
Maybe there are great actor out there who didn't became famous because playing in flop moovies...
@@Escobar224 Well....The second sequel DEFINITELY wasn't a flop. The Terminator producers were certainly on to something if they pulled in 524 million dollars on the second one.
Ktowers Wrong...It was a very successful film. Making $78 million on a $6 million budget is far from a flop.
@@Escobar224 It didn't flop in theatres. It gained huge profit because the cost was very low.
He might not know the answers to the questions but he is very witty and intelligent. Heck he became governor 30 years later.
20 years*
I would love to meet him
why did letterman stopped having him after 2000s
Conan the destroyed won't do well but The Terminator would. Arnold's best movie ever.
What case did Letterman cite? Henderson v Milliken 1968? I couldn't find anything with that name.
Look under Florence Henderson & Spike Milligan. 😉
Those two dudes loved cigars. I think David quit and Arny still smokes 'em. I recon them two to be good friends these days...
deep throat 3 book lmao
LOL
Man, living in 80s on EUA must be awesome...
Living in the 80s was the best still miss that time today.
Well....except for that insane recession......and that crack epidemic......and all that racism, prejudice, and ignorance.........I guess yeah it was bliss (?????)
@@nexusvexusus4096 shut the fuck up
Just excellent
This was hilarious, looked like Arnie was a bit drunk
I think this guy will have a great career and interesting life
What Supreme Court case was he referring to?
still no conan 3 . let's not even count that mimosa flick
I was 14 days old when this happened
Arnolds thighs though.
Herr Schwarzenegger is a very cheerful man😁👍
Omg, 1984 " his latest film" 😂That seems like an eternity ago
8:24 Arnold was rearing to become president back in 1984. Dang.
back in time ....lol
he is so funny
7:05 - That's exactly what Bruce Lee said. He didn't pick fights because you can't fight a bullet < paraphrase.
It’s odd, after like Terminator, Arnold never went on Letterman again. He just disappeared lol You’d see him on Leno, but never Letterman. Right up until Letterman retired. Even as governor he’d go on Leno, but never Letterman. I always wondered why.
Except he did appear after 1984’s “Terminator.” He guested on Late Night in 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990, and 1991. On Late Show, twice in 1994.
@@dongiller Well I meant Terminator 2 lol But still. For like the basically the whole 90s, 2000s and 2010s, he never went on Letterman. He’d go on Leno. Kimmel. Even Jimmy Fallon lol But not Letterman. It’s strange.
You could play a Great Wizard.
Он снялся в Конане... Поздоровался с Диланом Да Там Шварцнеггер снимался...
The Terminator was good, but T2 was the best, T3 was horrible, IMO
Arnold will always be The Terminator, but Linda Hamilton waa badass
It was great seeing her in the 6th Terminator Movie and it's the 1st time in 28 years that they both worked together
T2 was good. T1 the best 🤗 Just thought you got them reversed is all.
Arnold is the best bodybuilder ever
Those hands are abnormal in proportion .
6:53 ahahah epic
He was actually Mr Olympia 8 times, by the time this interview was made.
jublywubly No Lee Haney was the first to get to 8. Arnold only won 7.
7x
@@iggytse Arnold could have continued winning after 1975 had he wished to
Luke Casey Walsh sure that might have been possible be as it stands Arnold only won 7.
Cool
classic
I like his accent
Future governor of California could not name the three branches of government.
I think one day , I'll be a GOVENATAA!
You can tell he was uncomfortable, but he just played it off with jokes.
Arnold is twice as wide as David haha
More Like thrice man and he was even more bigger in the 70s
I guess it was the high testosterone level that made him perform like this in interviews 😅
I bet the three of them Linda, Mike and Arnold didn't think The Terminator would be a real classic... That's why he don't bother mentioning its filming.
And The Terminator was probably Already filmed by the time of this interview, his work on it was probably done at the time of this interview because it said on the internet the movie came out on October 26th which is 4 months after this interview. So that movie probably in post production going through editing and stuff at this time
he's dressed like a sunday schooler
Or a kindergarten teacher...
That PG rating ruined the Destroyer
