    As a Reagan historian, who has watched many hours of footage of his presidency taken by his own camera team, including scores of interviews, I can confidently say that I do not see Alzheimers present here. Yes, the President is older, and yes that means he looks it and his voice is not as strong and his delivery is slower. But I put that down to being 80 years old. The President clearly understands the questions and answers them as he would have many years earlier. There is no decline. As for forgetting scenes from movies: that's normal. He starred in 53 films throughout his career. And if he were President in 1991, I believe he could have done his job. That said, I have pinpointed 1992 as the year when he did descend into Alzheimers, being totally unable to recall anything to do with Iran-Contra when questioned by the special prosecutor at his office. We have the transcripts. And Reagan himself is totally alarmed by it. So, it was a blessing that he didn't get the third term that would have been his if not for the 22nd amendment which limits a president to two terms.

    I don't know who located this video, but thank you! I hope this puts to rest all of those history revisionists who claim that Reagan was showing signs of Alzheimer's while in office. This interview was conducted almost two years AFTER he left office in January 1989 and Reagan is as sharp as ever. It was not until 1994 that Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's - five years after he left office. Thank you again for this recording.

      @codetech6028 Před 7 lety +28

      Having just gone through watching the degradation and death of my father due to Alzheimer's, I recognize in this video the early signs of what could be called "pre-dementia". He still had most of his faculties, but the incidents of explainable "senior moments" were getting more and more frequent. Even when he talks about remembering so much of his younger life but completely blanking on certain scenes in a movie.
      My dad lost pieces of himself over an 8 year period. The first things to go were the things he was best at: photography, video production, his immense knowledge of cars. By the time he was diagnosed officially there had already been many incidents like what we can see in this interview and others from the time.
      Even several years after the official diagnosis my dad was fully capable of functioning, but the last 2 years he was not even aware of where or who he was. The degradation was rapid and unmistakable.
      I agree that it is extremely unlikely that he was exhibiting any tangible evidence of dementia while in office, but even if he had been it would have been at a low level and unlikely to affect decisions or policies.

      CodeTech I'm a Reagan historian, and I've pinpointed 1992 as the year when he went into deep decline. 1991 both here and with a taped interview with Hugh Sidey, he is completely lucid, on the ball, sharp. In 1992 he started to lose whole chucks of memory. He was still functional through to 1994, but that's when the wheels started to come off and he was diagnosed. As for his presidency, I did notice a decline in 1988 in terms of speech, and at times he seemed very quiet and withdrawn: but his diary is very clear, and lucid, so whatever he was going through, it did not affect his mental faculties at that point.

      In my studies and with the videos I've watched I agree with CR- 1992 seems to be pivotal year where the disease was entering into the more classic and recognizable stages. Per a NYT article: "On Sept. 13, 1992, Mr. Reagan made a campaign speech for President George Bush in Yorba Linda, Calif. In suit and tie on that sweltering day, but speaking more slowly than in the past, Mr. Reagan drew thunderous cheers from the shirt-sleeved crowd.
      Dr. Lawrence C. Mohr, one of the White House doctors in Mr. Reagan's second term, was seeing him for the first time in six months, and afterward, the doctor and the former President talked. As usual, Mr. Reagan asked about Dr. Mohr's family. But Mr. Reagan ''was distant,'' he said, and seemed ''preoccupied, which was unusual, because Ronald Reagan is a person who was engaged when he would talk to you.''
      At the end of the conversation, the doctor continued, ''Mr. Reagan asked me, 'What am I supposed to do next?' There was a blank look on his face.'' Dr. Mohr said he guided Mr. Reagan away and wondered ''what had caused the change and what was going to happen.''
      It seems that condition really started to kick up at some point in '92. After a visit to the Mayo in Aug of '93 apparently Mr. Reagan was put through a year long battery of tests and the diagnosis came out in '94.
      As for CR's notice of decline in 1988, I cannot help but wonder how much of that was more of his years getting to him and just being plumb worn out from being president for 8 years. I cannot even begin to imagine the demands placed upon the individuals in that position let alone being almost 78 when leaving office.

    What a great President. He turned this country around big time. Thank you for all you did.

    • @tubularbill
      @tubularbill Před 7 lety +3

      Nope. No truth to that at all. Everyone's taxes were cut across the board. Ultimately? Our economy doubled from 1981 thru 1988. Did we have a recession in 1990 - yes we did but it was nothing like the economic situation we had in 79-81. There is no truth at all to tax cuts for "the rich" sinking or hurting the economy. Plus provide any proof you can back.

    • @tubularbill
      @tubularbill Před 7 lety +1

      Spunky1991 - I agree he was not perfect nor was FDR who is canonized by the left. I disagree about supply side trickle down being a failure. This concept has always worked in history - the 1920's (the Depression was by market over exuberance and buying on margin not lower tax rates), the 1960's with the JFK cuts, the 1980's under Reagan, the 1990's with the Clinton-Gingrich cap gains cuts and he early to mid 2000's under Bush. Remember in 2000-2001.

    • @tubularbill
      @tubularbill Před 7 lety

      Spunky1991 - those tax breaks were for everyone. "Rich people" employ people. The more you incentivize the work for the better for growth. I am sorry but as a student of economics and one that has taught economics I totally disagree with your assertions Clinton did not rally the economy in 1993-1994. The real growth occurred starting in 96 thru early mid 2000. I can back that up with hard data. The 2008 recession occurred due or bad real estate loans and easy money. Obama has really not done a good job. It has bee so-so at best: Much of our growth and impetus has occurred to QE easy money and almost neg interest rates - yet we have never had a year above 3% GDP growth. Nothing real in organic growth terms. We have more people now on food stamps and Gov assistance than ever. Our deficit has gone up $10 Trillion since 2009. Our real unemploy rate is more like 8 to 10 percent and this does jot include underemployed. Really not a good track record.

    • @tubularbill
      @tubularbill Před 7 lety

      Spunky1991 - ok fair enough we can agree to disagree . However I stand by my assertion that the tax breaks did not lead to recession. There is nothing to back that up if you have factual evidence to back that up then please share. I would love to see it. Second if things are so good why is the Federal Reserve so reluctant to raise interest rates? Normal historic rates are in the 3 to 4% area so there is nowhere for people to make any money right now with near negative interest rates other than the stock market. It's phony money. The auto market is doing well but most new car purchases are leases and financing is around 72 months now. Which signals lack of income. For interest Rates - They should have been raised long ago. What is your take on that?

    Here we see what an American president looks and act like.
    A real patriot! A man with conviction and working for the American people. I remember the gasoline lines, We go early in the morning and after a few hours we get 10 gallons. A week after he became president there was no more lines. We again have jobs, he rebuild the roads and bridges and America prosper. Iran let our hostages go and the country got its pride back.
    America became the country we were proud of, the world respect us once again.
    WHAT THE FUCK HAPPEN TO US!
    Obama is killing or better yet killed our country and Hillary will buried! We need our pride back before it's too late. No body respect us anymore!
    Even the people are disrespecting this country.
    Now we have people disrespecting our national anthem in football games and school bands! We need to do something now before we destroy the best country in the world. If you don't respect our country leave it! If you don't like our laws live it! I'm sick and tired of this people that are trying to imposed there laws in our country and getting away with it. If you don't love America, fuck you and go back to wherever that fuck you came from. let's stop taking shit from people that moved here because there shit country don't want them and then they want to turn our country like the country they came from.
    I'm mad and sick of it!

      Disaster? Making jobs for everybody, stopping the flow of illegal immigrants, drugs and unregistrated weapons.....is that a disaster? Lowering taxes so it will become easier to exist for all people...disaster? Making the best relationship ever between USA and Russia, the 2 largest nuclear superpowers in the world....a disaster?

    • @WarthDader74
      @WarthDader74 Před 7 lety +1

      Spunky1991 And there you crossed the line between debating something in a proper way, and beeing uncivilized by calling someone an "unqualified piece of shit". Young man or woman; you have a lot to learn about how to act in debates, and also about facts from our real world. The our planet is very far from how it is described by the mainstream media.
      "He shipped jobs overseas with his businesses"...."So how exactly is he going to bring jobs back to America when he's responsible for many of them leaving?"....Are you serious? Do you actually believe that Trump did that? Those statements are actually so far from truth as it is possible to come.
      The ones that have moved jobs out of USA is Obama and the Clintons, that is a fact that has been proved for 4(!) presidential periods when they had the power. 8 years of Clinton + 8 years of Obama, with increasing problems in American society all time. Now finally there is a person who is able to repair these things, Trump is definitely the best thing to happen to USA since Ronald Reagan.

      @nightowl5475 Před 5 lety +3

      I admit President Reagan was a very articulate President and a great communicator. However, when you look at the results of what President Trump is doing, you have to admit, he is working on realistic immigration reform, which is badly needed. Being alive during the Reagan administration, I remember when Reagan allowed current illegal immigrants a path to citizenship, which I thought was wrong. Many conservatives alive during that time thought that Reagan copped out. Trump isn’t doing that. It was policies of both republicans and democrats in the past that has made our immigration policies totally a disaster today. Now, I admit, President Trump is no where as articulate as Former President Reagan. Trump is more or less a diamond in the rough. I don’t agree with everything he has done but no president in the history of this nation has gone through such a drastic coup to usurp him from office. That position that Trump is in has been validated and approved by WE the people based on the laws of our country in a fair and valid election based on the elective college put in place by our founding fathers, which gives each state a say in the matter of who gets elected. The democrats never had a problem with our form of elections until Trump became president. The electoral college remains a good thing and a fair and just law that gives the little states a say in our political system. Now, if you don’t like Trump, instead of approval of what the democrats are trying to do by removing him from office because of the trumped up charges of him being Putin’s puppet, remove him from office during the 2020 election if you feel he is not doing the job. Remove him the correct way by registering to vote in your state and voting him out of office. That is the way to do it, not this way. The proper way to remove him is during the presidential election. Let the people decide, not the politicians. We the people should make that decision and we should fight to keep that power, not doing it this way. Put up a candidate that you feel can beat Trump and take him on that way, the American way! Then, if he loses, it will be a fair and just decision made by us.
