The combat really is great imo. Really if they just had standard stages for each boss, it would probably be the best in the series.
So whilst the combat is better, I do find the arena structure and general lack of enemy variety a bit of a downgrade and makes the game blend together outside of the boss fights. For a game so focused on combat there needs to be more than like, 5 enemies.
Overall though, I enjoyed the game and I think it gets more enjoyable the more time you spend with it.

I beat the game on Spicy and I'm not sure how I feel about the combat. On one hand, it feels great, attacks feel extremely powerful and satisfying to land.
On the other, Travis has an extremely tiny moveset even compared to 1 and 2 and it gets old doing the exact animations over and over. I also hate how dodging is changed, the normal roll has no i-frames and the perfect dodge feels too inconsistent to work reliably. All that with enemies just having super armor up the ass makes me play way less aggressively than I did in past NMH which is boring to me.

All that and groups of enemies can hit you in the slow down of dark step (as well as the original attack you dodged sometimes) which means your only option in group fights (that aren't the basic enemy) or any fights with ranged enemies is to run like a pussy until your abilities are off cooldown and take potshots with your sword, which isn't fun when enemies are damage sponges. Even then I've been sniped before the animation of the drop kick ends even though i teleported across the entire stage.
Also the slow down ability is mostly useless against the final boss and others as they break out of stunlock after about the same amount of attacks anyways.

Although a bit of a correction here: When wrestlers are "interviewing" before a match, it's really not called interviewing, but "cutting a promo" in the wrestling industry as it serves not to break the illusion of "kayfab" (suspension of disbelief between the wrestlers' character and the line between the audience and the character the wrestler portrays; 4th wall stuff).

I feel like some of the combat changes are completely unnecessary and not great, putting dark step on the dodge button instead of activating from blocking makes you more likely focus on dodging, blocking intentionally is something I rarely ever did, you can tell they thought about this as regular attacks drain your power a lot more, when blocking used to be a sort of push and pull because you're negating damage but losing lots of power, you could open the enemy up if you could get a darkstep in but you could also run low on power making the darkstep worthless.
Not being able to switch between light and heavy to make a combo is really odd, heavy attacks do have more of a wind up and deal more damage but it makes the game have less flow.
Enemies no longer guard high or low, they negate all attacks or none, which slows things down a bit.
No longer having fist/kick melee to increase the likelihood of stunning the enemies.
Jumping is almost useless except for avoiding boss attacks that specifically require it, the jump attacks aren't great at all.
Darkside abilities being simplified into some pretty generic buffs instead of stylish over the top things with weird screen effects is a bummer.
Henshin modes while SICK barely give you anytime to have fun with it, 1 because of how long they last and 2 because you never fight enough enemies at once.
The death glove abilities while good could of been more customizable like in TSA, the chip system of that game could have improved the combat a lot, instead the chip system here is just buffs to stats for the most part, nothing seemingly unique or interesting.
The lack of other beam katanas at first didn't bother me until I realized the battle system wasn't getting more stuff as I progressed, there's a few unlockable moves but the vast majority of the game plays the same all the way through, even having ONE more weapon with a different combo pattern would of improved things.
Combat scenerios being entirely boss fights and preset 3-5 enemy rooms is really disappointing, yeah some enemies are harder to fight and certain combinations make things more interesting but often times you're given a lot of the same over and over, it gets kind of tedious, which is something I've never said about NMH combat before, not even in TSA, it's always been fast kinetic and visually inetresting, the biggest part for me is the lack of enemy count, one of the best feelings ever is getting a multkill with one finisher and having blood and money all over the screen as like 7 guys death cries play simultaneously, but here enemies don't even talk no classic "ARE YOU PREPARED, HUH?!" or "MY SPLEEEN!" style barks.
And really the lack of stages sucks, just straight up, instead of designated matches those same combat scenarios with the same enemies could have been in a series of rooms connected by paths that had a unique visual style for each boss.
Money is a complete non issue, you always have enough for the entry fee just from fighting, so at this point you're just playing side missions/chores for fun, unless your just want to grind WESN to level up some stats because there's like nothing to spend money on.
Anyway these are mostly just nitpicks, I still think the game is great for what it is, but I also feel it could have been better.

      @TheAnimatedGamer Před 3 lety

I liked how in the previous games they had much more seamless rhythm when transitioning between different moves and it gave the combat a lot of flow especially in the first game.

Fantastic video. Agreed with most except one thing, which I'll point out and doesn't detract from the video. You say Dark Step returns from the previous games. It doesn't, the mechanic we have now is essentially Witch Time.
The difference is important because in the older games you first had to block an attack to enter Dark Step, which was much closer to the Bushido Samurai style of fighting that Travis does and ties into the overall narrative with his morality aspect close to the Bushido code.
They probably replaced it with essentially Witch Time because it's more common in this type of gameplay but it's absolutely not the same as Dark Step when approaching fights for the player, especially in higher difficulties.

I'm a big No More Heores fan who's beat the first game several times and beat TSA with every character. But it pains me to say this that NMH3 was disappointing. After Gold Joe, things took a dive for me. I'm just doing 3 matches in the hub world just to go meet with a boss who gets killed off half the time. No cool build up or introduction either. Is their replacement bosses? Yes. But it doesn't feel like I'm taking on world ending aliens anymore. It really feels like Suda had cool alien boss designs commissioned. But then he didn't know how program them into a boss fight, or they were short on time so he had no choice but to kill them off immediately and replace them with more traditional boss fights with simpler designs to render and program. As far the story goes; the stakes felt high in the beginning, when Badman was killed, Shinobu was in a coma, and Badgirl was traumatized, but then it just fizzled out towards the end. Overall, when you beat the game, I don't feel like I saved the world or finally reached the end of my adventure. TSA built so much up in the story, only for none if to come to fruition in NMH3. The best way to describe NMH3 is "style over substance." You can tell they were cutting corners with this game. I know the pandemic made things worse, but I would have been fine with NMH3 being delayed a year to make the game seem actually complete. The first game will always be my favorite in series because overall it's a whole lot more well rounded. 2 cents from a random NMH fan.

"You can trust for Suda to care for the ones you love" - Cant really agree sadly, Badman, Shinobou and Henry each get a screentime of like... well, to avoid spoilers, lets say: Very little.
Meanwhile he throws in longer references for his old games, not everyone even knows - also: "The story keeps me guessing constantly" is a nice of phrasing: Some things never get explained whatsoever. I mean, the whole game is full of references, but at the cost of having barely any background story or character development.
Even the scenes where FU talks to the bosses gave more insight and feeling than the 1 min banter Travis had with each before their fight.
Suda51 said in an live interview with ign last night that Marvoules borrowed him the rights for the NMH IP for five years, and thats kinda how the end product appears.
I mean, its still impressive that he managed TSA and in this one in that time period, but I just wish he had more time, and corona certainly didnt help in the progress either.
Ive watched all of your Deadly Individualism videos in the last weeks for anticipation, and looking forward for this one aswell, of course this was short preview of many things I hope you will adress. I don’t mind the references but I agree with the treatment of Badman, Shinobu, and Henry. It felt more like shock value since the certain “events” that unfold with those characters don’t contribute much at all. There’s the boat scene at the end but absolutely nothing changes about Shinobu, Bad Girl, or Travis after that “certain scene” with Fu. Also barely any screen time, like you mentioned.
I love the game and the story for just embracing the fun and not being too serious but it feels misleading when you look at that early Fu scene (you know the one) and the Henry shenanigans versus the tone of the rest of the game. I really was hoping for some Travis development after that exchange with Fu calling him scum but I still enjoyed their interactions.
I really wanted to see more of Henry and that lore drop 🥲 but I guess we have to wait 10 years for that. (Good game tho)

Definitely play on Spicy. My main criticism with the game was that on normal it was way too easy. The only somewhat challenging part was the boss that kills you in one hit with every attack. The slots power boosts are completely broken. Hopefully there chances of occurring on higher difficulties are lower, because they are way too powerful. Also the completion rewards for getting all the collectibles are pretty poor. You just get some Tshirts, money and XP. No extra moves or exclusive chips. There’s also three adventure missions and two of them I believe give you absolutely nothing upon completion. Can't wait to see your deadly individualism on this game. Cause my first time beating the game, the story just had me so confused and a little angry.
I played all of the previous NHM games, including TSA. And some certain things just had me so confused
    SPOILERS AHEAD
    like
What the hell happened to Henry? He looks and sounds so different. And he's in a gang now? Was this explained in TSA? Cause I might have forgotten. I forget a lot of things when they are in text form.
Also, both Travis and Henry died but then came back to life for some reason? I was just so confused.
And Sylvia. Her entrances are a bit too zany for me. She flies, comes down in a light, has glowing eyes at one point.
So many things made me so confused

    • @FightCain
      @FightCain Před 3 lety +13

Henry is in an Emerald Knight clan or something in TSA. It's one of the last Travis Strikes Back VN where they pretty much referenced NMH3, and where travis fought Death and Drive in Fire Pro Wrestling.
Also, due to the controversy Quinten Flynn had, he was replaced with another VA, which sucks and understandable but still sucks.
      --Spoilers or stuff, i unno--
Also, it's a theory but diehard suda fans thinks travis and sylvia have the 'Silver Eye' from the Silver Case series, which basically makes you immortal and come back to life. It's still a theory based on the little dialogue between Sylvia and Travis on the "NMH" song from the "Outer Rim" album. Probably explains the glowing eyes for sylvia and the scar on travis's eye. How they got it, I have no idea, but it does explain how Travis came back to life.
      czcams.com/video/13rhrr86_CI/video.html
Further cemented with Midorikawa and Kamui's appearance, which means the stuff that happened in Silver Case/25th Ward also existed in NMH.
I think the Henry boss was a decoy, which explains his reappearance.
The other stuff like Sylvia's entrances are pretty much probably done for references like Fujiko Mine from Lupin the 3rd or Captain marvel and many other. I think the one with the glowing eyes is a reference to Halo since the ship really looks like the Pillar of Autumn.
I can't wait for what new things Suda51 will work on, and since he was recommended by a journalist to watch Buckaroo Banzai, who knows what kind of a weird trip he'll come up with next? Maybe somehow connect that with Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime or Contact.

I don’t think the Henry you fight is a decoy, but that he’s become some sort of ghostly existence, like the horror movie boss from NMH2. When Henry was finalizing the deal with Damon to assassinate Travis, he committed suicide by walking into traffic. I assume he did that as a kind of “fast travel” option? Same as when he appeared in the window of what was presumably Travis’ apartment (as it was the room Sylvia entered into).

I personally think NMH3 is a huge downgrade compared to the first two games in almost every way. The comedy bits never made me laugh, the story and characters were kinda bland with too much emphasis on Family Guy styled "Hey remember that one time?" kinda dialogue, the visuals were awful in certain places and with certain characters ( Lookin at you Shinobu... ), and the overworld areas were extremely disappointing with how empty they were... Finished the game yesterday, and honestly this is easily the worst game in the series for me. Even TSA, for all its flaws, felt so much more in line with the series as a whole. There are many problems with the game, but the biggest one is the writing, none of the characters feel like themselves, and the game goes out of it's way to be as absurd as possible, which makes it hard to understand or care what's going on most of the time.
Like, take Travis himself, who has absolutely no arc in this game, unlike the previous three. He also acts completely differently from cutscene to cutscene, and in general it feels like Suda has forgotten what the character was supposed to be in the first place. The other characters don't fare much better, with Henry being a particularly egregious example, as they seem to butcher his entire character just for the fuck of it. Despite this game being written by Suda, it ironically feels way less like a NMH game than any of the previous installments.
There's load of other issues as well, like the bosses being overall pretty lacklustre and forgettable, with only a couple of them actually living up to the series' standard. The stages are also completely gone, and instead we get a bland overworld with very little interesting going on, and an absolutely horrid Mission system which is impossible to keep track of. The game also looks outright worse than the first two games, which is saying something considering how old they are. The character designs are also kinda ugly in my opinion, most of the bosses look indistinguishable from the generic enemies. Why they didn't bring back the guy who made the designs for the first two games is beyond me.
Also, this is a much more minor point, but I don't get why the game has completely removed the sexiness of the first two games, everyone just looks kinda ugly here? It's obviously not a huge deal, but the sexy designs of the characters, male and female, made the games much more visually appealing.
I will try to end things on a more positive note though. The combat is great, maybe even better than in NMH2, which is no small feat. I also really like the idea of Death Chips, though I wish it was possible to change weapons like in previous games. The soundtrack is stellar as always, with a ton of memorable tracks. The series is known for its fun combat and amazing music, and I'm happy to say NMH3 absolutely delivers in these aspects.

Completely agree, the writing felt way too reference laden to me. Like I almost thought it was being a parody of itself or something, expecting a twist half way through lol. Especially after TSA, the shallow dialogue & writing is really odd. Also I see a lot of praise for the voice acting but I feel like everyone was directed poorly, some really strange & stilted delivery in this game. The translation may have been handled differently than the previous games. Seems like they went for a direct translation approach. Surprised more people haven’t mentioned that.

    Game spoilers:
I think the writing was actually really bad. The alien enemies had interesting connections with FU, but they don't go anywhere, nor do any of the aliens have an effect on Travis' personality. Heck, almost half of them get killed early. Remember how Travis shows regret after Holly Summer's death or Alice Twilight's. He does show guilt after killing Kimmy and even tells Sylvia "Never make me kill another woman." His next two boss fights are women and he never mentions this line again.
Also the side characters are basically useless. Most of them are out of commission after the first boss fight. And they only really show up to do deal few hits to the semi-final boss.
Also, is it me, or does Travis say a lot more references? His talks with Bishop is just him name-dropping Miike films. When Shinobu is recovering he just explains suplexes. And with Badgirl mourning, he reccomends her anime. Also, these references don't work when most of the players have no clue what he's talking about.

Kinda crazy that 1 still had the best gameplay loop

I played NMH 3 from beginning to end, It's very easy to overwhelm these if you use the grab outta the chipp buffs, sushi buffs, death slow and rain in a sequence. Super easy 👌. Gonna do spicy diff later. Overall, I enjoyed the game and I dig the gameplay and open world aspect.

Between NMH 2 and 3 it has been 416 Years, 11 Months, 3 Weeks, 3 Days, 5 Hours and 40 Minutes

After watching most of your analysis/retrospective on Suda games, I just think your reviews are definitely the go-to for NMH3. I can't take the other reviewers seriously especially igno, gaemspit, or those other guys who have their exaggerated faces on the thumbnail.

I appreciate that the game didint try to force anything it didint want to include. Specifically levels and boss count.
Im a little dissatisfied with the lack of full levels but it occurs to me that the series' actually super good levels, if were being real, stop with letz shakes crappy hallway. The 2nd half of 1 is mostly a few puny sections, 2 doesn't even give half its bosses the hallway and the rest are too damn long and tsa is too different to really comment (cia is terrible though). 3 concentrating on the improved combat and creating interesting scenarios trims the fat.
I was also unhappy that 4 of the aliens get sniped before you could fight them but in hindsight, Howell, Henry, Destroyman and Native Dancer were clearly a bigger deal and had an effect on travis as a character. Call me a cinic but there was no way sleepy ass Paradox Bandit was gonna have the effect Bad girl, Alice and 8 Heart had on Travis at this point in his development. Travis wouldnt have broken down like he did for kimmy if it was Vanishing point.
This game trimmed the fat and focused its experience. I know what i wanted as a fan, but i know even more what it needed as a connoisseur.

I honestly think NMH2 started using light and heavy attacks, but also ended up making it to where low attacks are heavy and high attacks are light(which make sense) since I notice using low attacks wore at enemy health faster.
