    For anyone living in a cold climate where frost puts an end to the year of gardening; leaving the carrots in the ground and picking when needed can be done easily by covering them with bags of leaves which will prevent the frost from ruining them. I have been doing this for years. Simply rake up any dry leaves (straw or hay will work as well) and fill large garbage bags with leaves and lay over the garden bed when the temperature is just about to go below freezing. It creates a frost barrier. They will easily last all winter and taste sweeter than ever. I simply go out with a shovel and remove a few bags, fork out a few pounds and cover again. I simply move along the rows as they are removed. The leaves can be used for compost in the spring as well.
    Many many years ago the carrot tops were the edible part and the carrot itself was put aside. The tops are a little bitter, but can also be eaten. There are many recipes using the greens.

      I used to over-winter carrots just by piling straw mulch a foot or so deep (Ruth Stout garden) way I planted potatos, push them firmly onto soil, lightly cover, and a foot of good straw, they kept most of the winter if it wasn't raining. Even under snow!. Carrots are actually better after a hard freeze, sweetened them.

    for carrot to be bigger, when its 2 months old cut the plant in the middle so you have less green mass, which will allow for carrot to grow larger because green part wont be able to absorb more things when its not so large
    this is what we have been doing for years and almost no one knows about this

    • @covahsmusicvault8953
      @covahsmusicvault8953 Před 2 lety +1

      Sorry, I'm ignorant to your explanation.....could you please explain it in simpler terms. Are you saying to thin the tops or to splice the plant itself? Cheers

    • @lafuerzademiraza1778
      @lafuerzademiraza1778 Před 2 lety +24

      @@covahsmusicvault8953 its fine, my eng is rusty a lot
      so when you notice that carrot tops became medium large, which is about two months after planting seeds, you make them shorter in order to prevent tops for gaining more mass and growth, because if tops keep growing carrot itself wont so much, but if you make tops shorter then there will be more food for carrot to grow larger instead of everything going into carrot tops advancement
      i use very sharp scythe to make carrot tops shorter, but be precise dont cut too much, sometimes i cut half sometimes less than that
      to make it more clear you cut tops with scythe just like you are cutting grass except you are not cutting all the way to the ground, just making tops shorter for the reasons i said earlier
      this is also done for many other plants, for example grapevine, tomatoes, many trees, i mean you are not cutting these plants tops but you are cutting some parts of these plants in order for fruits to get some extra materials needed for growth instead letting plant have too much of green mass which will be too much for plant too handle and feed everything
      its like, look at the carrot plant like a person with legs and arms, in order for legs(carrot) to gain more mass you must cut the arms(tops), so now when body consumes food because there are two limbs less, the other two will receive twice as much materials needed for growth
      also there is one more big trick about carrots, they hate hard earth around and especially bellow them, hard earth is preventing carrot growth, so always make sure that earth is loose and not hard at all before planting seeds
      measure full grown carrot with its roots, thats how much deep earth must be soft and loose
      and dont forget, sun is a must, but at the end WATER is the element which gives life !

    The seedling that were thinned and the carrot tops harvested can be turned into pesto. Make a regular pesto minus cheese, freeze in ice cube trays. Cheese can be added after thawing. Throw into soups or thaw and eat as pesto.

    Very well done. Such a good job doing this video! I like how you show certain steps close up and slower - that had to help a lot of newer gardeners. Love the quiet little sound effect when the carrot bags and carrots were stacking up. The music was quiet and pleasant too. This probably gets people thinking about how they can grow more food with simple things. Oh- and I love your watering can! (The plastic milk jug with holes in the cover. I was just wondering what I could use to make a lighter sprinkle of "rain" for my smaller plants - and you solved it.) You did everything in this video just right! :-) Thank you for your hard work!
