- Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) is a digital video game download service available through the Xbox Games Store, Microsoft's digital distribution network for the Xbox 360 with its original release on the Original Xbox in 2003. This is a look back at the story of XBLA and why its not a part of the Xbox One Console.

I really liked XBLA. It was for me one of the better features for the 360!
Well good thing. The winter of arcade is this year.

same me too
Who remembers those really shitty avatar games on the arcade?
Haha yes that’s the main reason I actually clicked on this
Yeah I bought those
Though world of keflings demo is pretty nostalgic for me
Doritos crash course
ed champagne castle miner z was a masterpiece of gaming
I am absolutely not a console gamer, but I will admit that I am addicted to this channel. It really makes me want to get my soldering iron out and hardmod some console :o
Yeah, motivating and inspiring tbh
I still have my 360 hooked for the prime fact xbla is on it.
same. what hasn't made it to X1 I keep 360 around for ;)
I have a small fortune in XBLA games in my present 360 HDD, many games not available today like "OutRun Online Arcade" & "Afterburner Climax". I still buy games & DLC via the 360's XBLA today, I wonder how long it will still be around & the online 360 update support.
I only have Scott Pilgrim as a unlisted game. Shame I never got Afterburner Climax...
@@AirshBornely The key is to have purchased off XBLA in the past, then you can redownload the license for the older games you once paid for which I did & was delighted to have so many classic arcade games once available off XBLA.
Marble blast ultra or double d dodgeball anyone?
Hope you have a couple of backups. I do. It's kind of a pain to maintain 500gb of games but I'll be damned if I'm going to risk losing a huge chunk of software that I paid for just because they don't feel like maintaining servers on their end anymore.
@@nodak81 You can redownload the games at anytime on any 360 if you own the license as I recently bought a new E-model & obtained every game & DLC I paid for years ago, even games no longer available.
I miss CastleMiner Z on 360
@@ghettoboxman2597 also in the settings on steam u can change it to the xbox version in beta settings. :D
I still having this game on my library, and I love it
Seriously tho
@@julianarbelaez2928 I got that game on Xbox 360 library and on steam. If Xbox ever goes offline should buy it on steam.
@LunaXBL broooo i remember it was like avatar lazer wars or something
Damn shame that Outrun isn't available anymore. SEGA should do what they did with the 3DS version. Remodel the car so it's no longer a Ferrari and bring it back as a backwards-compatible title.
@Daisuke Young Yes, they need the 2019 equivalent of Tom Kalinske.
You might be able to emulate it at this point, and if not probably soon.

i remember playing the demo for years until i got the full game, first found it when a cousin of mine bought his 360 a long time ago and it came installed in the video game
This is one of the most interesting channels I've ever found - you have so much knowledge of the scenes and modding communities that I once enjoyed very much. Thank you for sharing your experiences and wealth of knowledge.
I love how all the indie games and retro ports were all in one place on xbla
Now on the Xbox one their mixed in with the normal games which makes it harder to find gems
Great video, It's great that you're highlighting all of the Xbox's history that way it doesn't get forgotten. This video took me down memory lane honestly. Keep up the great work.
Used to buy 1 XBLA game every week back in the day.. sigh..those were the days!
I still buy games & DLC off XBLA, recently purchased "I Am Alive" off there. In fact I have a list of DLC & games I want to obtain off XBLA while the 360 still has support as I never owned an XB1 & still play & use my Xbox 360 often.

I know you mentioned a bunch there but; 'Marble Blast Ultra' was/is amazing. I was really pleased to recently learn it got a PC port after being delisted.
(specifically the 360 version of MB:Ultra as MB:Silver/Gold editions were originally already on PC).

Yeah it's bummed me out that XBLA isn't even on Windows 10, I have so many games on my 360 that would go great with my PC Arcade build like Radiant Silvergun, Guardian Heroes, MvC2. But I've had to settle with roms from various emulators. They're missing out on a major market by not bringing it back to XBone and Windows 10.
I think Guardian Heroes is backwards compat. I just saw it on sale not to long ago for just a $1.
Some XBLA was ported to Windows 8 and Windows Phone in favor of Xbox Live on Windows. But Microsoft stopped doing this now.
Yes,I was ready to buy a xbox360 just to have Deathsmiles,Kof 2002 U.M,Cotton 2,Troubles witches neo...on my arcade cabinet.
So,now it's impossible,I need a modded one and dowload them?
Thanks
Sergio Nino III they want 100% of the money that why Game Pass exists
@@Sam-Lawry not true, Deathsmiles 2 & those KOF games are still available on Xbox 360 live arcade. Not trouble witches though, but there is a trouble witches prequel on steam.
You should do a video on the indie games service they did.
Love the quality of the video. Awesome work!
Vin thank you so much for your amazing content i love it personally keep it up!
Shadow complex. It was so interesting with its 2.5D style.
There's a PC port of that game. So you could still play it now.
I have the remastered version on Xbox One. Such a great title.
Achirag Chirag Also a remastered version for Xbox One.
Also back compat so if you owned it on 360 you can play on Xbox one for no extra charge

So glad I made a point of downloading all my XBLA games and storing them on a spare Elite HDD, Prince of Persia HD remake and Manic Miner to name 2 :-)
Indeed smart
@bigevilworldwide1 I didn't know that. Still seems safer the other way. Cause they could cut off service to even access the downloads
I downloaded them all as a matter of course when I got a PS4 and was dumping XBL, Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy were de-listed and so were many of the others when I last looked, in fact the XBLA looked like it had been stripped bare.
and anyone who has an XBL account knows that their purchase history and games owned list is an absolute mess, those clowns include patches, demo's and updates in the list and it runs into quite a long list after a few yrs.
@@GforceMI1965 lol yeah 360 download list history is a goddamned mess... missing content, slow loading, limited display.
I mean.. at least it still works!
My PS3 store list is so long it physically crashes the browser,- have to download through the dashboard instead. Again at least they still exist... for now.
@@RodniDemental Oddly enough, you can apparently still buy the Prince of Persia Classic on XLA ........ marketplace.xbox.com/en-GB/Product/Prince-of-Persia/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410865
ah man memories with castle crashers damn why did it end most of these games had 4 player couch coop
I loooove XBLA, and its why i still keep my R2D2 360 along with my original CoinOped Xboxes next to my XB1X. Arcade was great for retro gamers that want to some of their simple, older games slightly updated! Guardian Heroes HD, Raystorm HD, Bionic Commando Rearmed 1/2, Beyond Good And Evil HD, Alien Breed 1, 2, and 3, Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun, Marathon: Durandal, Splosion Man, Braid, Battle Block, Alien Hominid, Military Madness, Lode Runner, multiple Bomberman titles, R-Type DX, and on and on and on. Man I miss XBLA and the Wii ware shop, better hold on to these games on your hard drives guys- some may never get a re-release!
I miss the XBLA so much. Great video i'm a big fan of the channel! I'd say my favourite games were Marble Blast Ultra, Trials HD, Splosion Man and Peggle. The lack of XBLA on the One certainly contributed to my decision to switch back to Sony consoles
Marble Blast Ultra, Trials HD and Splosion Man were my favorites too! Spent countless hours on those masterpieces.
Just loving the videos and format. Keep up the great work! The topics your videos cover are always money !
Amazing video! Thank you!
The XBLA was the main reason why I chose the 360 over the PS3. The library of games that were on the platform was insane and made me appreciate retro gaming. Even the PS4 has been completely lackluster with its PS2 classic selection and has no backwards compatibility at all with PS1 games. It's really a shame.
@Channel07 not really it's just skimpy anime games lol but yeah it does suck
@Channel07 That and killing the PS3's PSN store by removing titles without any announcements or anything. GTA LCS and VCS "HD" remakes for example have completely vanished. I can't buy those even if I wanted to, so back to piracy it is
@@Knaeckebrotsaege Damn, I still play LCS/VCS on PS3. Still charming games imo.
Recently learned there are android versions of them, very curious about how those turned out.
I will say I appreciate a lot of xbla stuff showing up on X1. I think PS4 has missed a huge opportunity not having a PS1/PS2 game marketplace (PS3 would be nice too as well but at least expect the others!). Ah well.
Great video bro. Im glad i got most of those games before they pulled them from the store. Looks like i missed out on the scot pill.
To me the best xbox consoles are the x original the x360 slim and the xb1s before they took snap, but they really need to bring back xlive music and snap
Thanks for this piece of history, love your channel !
Amazing videos!!!
Greetings from Spain
I remember an old favorite that ONLY released on XBL Arcade... SCHIZOID. Dual analogue stick controlled top-down/puzzle game. Since it only release on XBL and no where else it might soon be lost forever
I have played only ONE game on Xbox Live Arcade, that is N+. That is the only one I have played 8 years straight.
Electro_Deadlight_Elite you do know it's on miniclip yeah?
@@JohnDoeC78That's N, Not N+. N+ and N++ are console exclusives.
Really nice video, well done!
Awesome video MVG! You make me love XBOX more and more :)
Radiant Silvergun is my favorite, by far! I played it for hundreds of hours on my Japanese Sega Saturn. More people should give it a shot, as it's backwards compatible with XBox One.
Paid a small fortune for a Japanese Saturn and RS, I rejoiced the day it came out on XBLA
Bringing back XBLA should be a core focus of MS for the XB2.
I really appreciate you doing so many videos on Xbox stuff. It's really an underrepresented console on CZcams.
I always enjoy your videos that give a look back on old services and products we can’t officially get our hands on today. Hell I didn’t even know XBLA started on the original Xbox.
I was playing OUTRUN the other evening and not a soul online, very sad and also Bomberman, cmon guys get back on to the classics
Maybe because the game is no longer available for purchases? did you watch the video?
Bomberman was so good online!
u can play the game but online racing is gone yrs ago. they took it away. but it won't play on the one
I had outrun online arcade on my xbox360 and i remember playing that game when it wasn't available anymore and i am so glad i had the chance to play that game. so much fun and if you want the same type of arcade style feel of it. get the game outrun 2: coast to coast.
I regret to this day not purchasing Afterburner Climax after downloading the demo...
I think I had 100+ games on XBLA. Spent the majority of my gaming time on there. Was such a good feature. Easy to buy, easy to look over your library of games. Aesthetically very very pleasing. Best feature of the last gaming generation for sure.
I love your channel. It's cool that you're able to breathe second life into the conoles we grew up with. Thanks for being awesome!

2004 : Xbox Live Arcade
2019 : Xbox Game Pass
Loved live-playing 1 vs 100. Licensing is such a double-edged sword. On the one hand, licensing can be a part of what makes a gaming experience complete, and on the other hand due to music, branding and even IP ownership issues, we can see games lost to the sands of time. EDIT: I'm hoping Bizarre Creations successor Lucid Games will put out an MSR/PGR sequel eventually.
1 vs 100 was so fun to take a break and just chill seemed like it never made it out of beta and they killed it
Great video. I have very fond memories of UNO and 1 Vs 100.
Such a great video I subscribed. XBLA was awesome, and that Summer of Arcade was cool too. It was fun seeing Major Nelson talk about the new games.
Summer of arcade=Cristmas time for Xbla buyers.
I Managed to keep 1 XBLA Game on my xbox 360 And that's trails.
I liked Marble Blast Ultra. Got it before it was delisted. 😃
Me too... but I didn't get the DLC before it was pulled (I got the free one, though). There should be a LAW, that no matter the reason for a game or DLC to be delisted... that there is a PUBLIC NOTICE it is going to happen, one full week (longer, if there is time... such as a license expiring) before they are pulled, so people have a final chance to get it - whether it's on sale or not.
fun fact: there is a pc port that is still being made, there is a 2017 fangame called "marble blast platinumquest" and a 2018 official remake called "marble it up"
mb platinumquest is for pc, and marble it up is on steam and nintendo switch
A wonderful blast from the past, this video!
Thanks for the memories and for talking about this!
I was an avid XBLA player. I even tried to compete with gamerscore leaderboards at the point of realising I had played enough of them that I would see my profile on various site rankings/leaderboards. This motivated me to try 'complete' each new release as fast as possible each time a new one came out (assuming it was achievable by human or not permalocked,--= anyone remember that glitched Smashed TV achievement that nobody could have done even it wasn't glitched haha... :P)).- Eventually I couldn't keep up with double releases each week. Very fun in the earlier days where the curation of the content might have been a bit higher imo but to this day there are still so many great XBLA games; I'm quite glad to see many of them show up in X1 backwards compatibility. Hopefully no more delisting.. That really put me off the whole digital content thing around 2010 especially after experiencing a couple of console and HDD failures at that point not to mention a few games that have become permanently inaccessible.
In retrospect I can see that I liked the whole 'arcade' game attitude (pick up and play games that you don't have to sink much time into unless you WANT to) while certainly still being challenging/satisfying. Fits my short attention span ? Hmm. But I didn't realise I was playing into the whole digital game thing to some degree. I appreciate the convenience but seeing the push against physical media now I'm inclined to not be so keen on all this digital only content.
To me xbla was more of a competitive thing with friends and will always have those great memories.
Hi to all the other xbla players, I still remember many of you. Perhaps a few people remember some names from the xbla community. Good times. ;)
I remember wasting most of my time playing Worms 2: Armageddon on my Xbox 360, such great console... too bad my xbox got bricked...
Some of the arcade classics have no DRM so they can run on unmodded xbox 360 I did s video on it
Interesting. I'd love to get Afterburner Climax onto my 360.
Excellent video and awesome job
I don't know why I'm a huge fan of your content but almost every time I watch a new video of yours I have to resubscribe maybe it's on my end but just letting you know in case it's a bug on CZcams otherwise great video I love the depth you go into on the content
Perfect Dark XBLA!
The game was 10 dollars! Got to experience it via rare replay
But if XBLA was such a goldmine for Microsoft then why wouldn't they want to continue it?
1.Change of Direction.
2.Companies rather put there games on other stores
3.relay on xbox 360 arcade store?
Great video as always. Double Dragon and Smash TV were always great games to have on XBLA
Well, I just learned the word envisaged today. Thanks MVG! Also, great vid as always ^_^
I never had an XBox of any kind, so I can't really say what my favourite was. However, it did seem like a great idea, but let down by the strict licensing policy. I guess competition was, and still is, quite fierce. Microsoft really messed up this 8th generation, but it looks like they are trying to make amends for the next one by snapping up quality development teams.
Banjo ports FTW!!!
the banjo ports were top tier
Don't forget Conker!
Banjo ports r still there
I'm glad rare replay came out and brought these back
Excellent episode!
Thanks for another great video MVG. In the intro and a little throughout the video it sounds like you used a song in the style of the band Nero. The name is right on the tip of my tongue and I can't place it.
Speaking of delisted...probably the rarest xbla game is the crimson dragon demo for x360
either that or the Goldeneye port
Hallo MVG!
If you would spontaneously recommend a console to buy for two little girls who love to dance and sing?
Would you choose Nintendo switch with the game just sing and just dance?
I want a carefree solution, I do not want to spend too much time installing stuff.
I'd rather pay than spend time.
If you're willing to get an older generation, the Wii U has full backwards compatibility with all of the older just dance games on wii. So you don't have to pay for ubisoft's crappy JDU service. And I think JD 2019 is also wii-u supported!
I'd suggest to stick to the original wii. It's common in the used market and cheaper than the wii u (don't pay more than 50, mind you). It's entirely focused on motion controls (just dance gets still released), and if one day you want to mod it you will only require an sd card, a usb stick, and a good tutorial.
Another awesome video 👍
Great video!
360 had only 4 times the RAM of the Original. ONE has 16 times the RAM of the 360. Compare the graphical jumps... 😑
Ram isn’t everything
A gpu is more important for graphics
While RAM isn't everything (especially on the graphical side) the jump from the X360 to the Xbox One still not much impressing as previously generations. :(
This is wrong....
Xbox 360 has 8! Times the RAM of the OG Xbox.... 512 unified MB VS 64 unified MB
I don’t get it. I can still play killer instinct and castlevania on my xb1x.
You see those examples are both fairly popular franchises. Make no mistake they would still disappear the moment MS doesn't renew the licenses though (as we've observed with a few examples already), that's the point of concern.
'Rare' is under MS I think so Killer Instinct probably not going anywhere anytime soon but Konami are the ones that determine whether Castlevania remains on the store.
eg. when the Midway buyout happened. ALL midway games got delisted including many that were 'launch period xbla games. Only a couple have returned, possibly out of sheer popularity/name recognition imo (Joust) but most of them are still 'missing'.
Great video. I miss Arcade. My favorite was Age of Booty. That game was so easy to pick up and play with random people who ended up becoming friends.

Well now I’m just sad! I didn’t have a 360 when it was current gen, and I remember seeing a lot of great XBLA stuff in passing. Now I’ve got a PS4 for the exclusives, but yeah I’d totally get an XBO if they had XBLA! The backwards compatibility has gotten me close to a purchase here and there, but that would be the deal maker for me. Too bad.
Love the videos! Just subbed, after realizing I watch your stuff a lot.
I have spent so much money on the Arcade section of the 360 that I have literally bought and played ALL the games that you are showing in the video and I'm not kiddin.
