I know late to the party but here goes. I recently bought one still running mostly stock parts. Only thing I have broken in the first 2 weeks was one stub hub so in the realm of broken means upgrade it has received all 4 new stainless stub hubs and 4 new heavy duty stainless 90mm dog bones. Completely my fault but was doing some exploratory on it and went to check the gears, well.... evidently they use some killer loctite on the screws that go into the aluminum motor plate because one of the bolt head twisted off so this weekend she gets a new motor plate. Mine came with no battery or charger. Charger was no problem since i had a multicharger for my other RC anyway. Bought one 5200 mah 2s lipo 50c battery a zee i believe it was from amazon. A week later they had a deal basically 2 for one on the same battery so I ordered 2 more. Ive been pretty happy with it so far. It flies throwing grass and dirt across my front yard. Want some fun get this thing on a lightly snow covered piece of asphalt there is no traction and tornado donuts abound. Drifting full time at half throttle.
My brushless EPX pro kicks some butt. I'm running the stock 3300kv motor with a 6500mah 2s 50c Lipo battery from Amazon for 18$ bucks. I have some frontend upgrades but that's about it. Redcat did a killer job with the Volcano, it's not a Traxxas but it's works for me. The aftermarket parts are everywhere, that's a good thing
When you buy a Traxxas your pretty much just buying the name. Redcat had to stuff allot of quality parts into their rigs to create a name for themselves, so the end result was a truly badass rig for a great price. The stock 3300kv brushless motor alone is perfectly balanced and really well made. Sure I had some issues with my Redcat but it was actually fun to figure out the problems, kinda made me feel like a race technician or something, Lol

Looking for a little bit of help here! I'm a bit discouraged by our initial experience with this vehicle... My son has less than an hour of runtime on his Xmas present and we've now had 2 critical failures that will require parts replacements and were NOT the result of hard crashes or abuse... First, the screw on the lower front steering knuckle dropped out LITERALLY on his 1st run down the street when it bumped a curb. Not a crash by any means - he was being careful and way under full speed on the stock 2000mA NiMH battery. So I patched the stripped out knuckle with an epoxy fill and got it going again, for now (Aluminum knuckles are on the way already for a permanent fix). So today, we ran it for about 15 minutes in the yard and street, changed to the backup 3800Ma backup battery I'd bought with it and went to a dirt BMX track in town. 10 minutes later, a rear wheel fell off after a typical (less than 12" air) jump and flat landing. The rear wheel axle had broken where the retaining pin goes through. Dead in the water again. Are these problems really normal? If we had abused this thing at all, cartwheeled it, or anything of that sort, I'd ABSOLUTELY own it - but this does not bode well for the quality/longevity of this truck. Today I found a set of SSteel dogbone & wheel axles on Amazon (since Redcat is OutOfStock on both...) Comments appreciated, please
These RC vehicles are economy products. They definitely have major deficiencies right out of the box, that should be addressed before use. The screw stripped on the tie rod is not typical, and shouldn't happen with light impacts. I honestly don't recommend the aluminum control arms as they bend and also distribute more energy into the chassis on hard impacts, so you risk breaking the plastic. The dogbones are weak, which is why I upgraded them right away. But don't despair, most RC vehicles require regular repair and maintenance if you use them regularly. The higher end brands tend to hold up much better, so you might want to invest in a more expensive and better quality vehicle if you want to minimize down time. My local hobby shops all carried RedCat parts and upgrades in stock, for quick repair. More costly than eBay or Amazon, but quicker.
It's done a few cartwheels and rough hits without exploding anything yet. The only thing I've destroyed so far is a pinion, but that's due to the softer metal is made of and perhaps mesh wasn't as good as it should have been. With the brushless on 2s it's actually worthwhile driving it.
First thing to go was front dogbone. Cup kept eating into it then finally snapped the ball end off inside the wheel cup. The stock hub carriers are garbage but work... if you like bearing-less bushings.. hit a dumpster at close to 20mph at least head on and cracked the underside front of the bulkhead,then later cartwheeled flipped on grass and snapped the chassis the rest of the way lol. Theyre amazingly great vehicles if you invest into them a bit. No way around it if youre doing brushless especially. Worst i found was the "stock" differential grease is basically bicycle grease and garbage. A MUST to change! Along with the stock shock oil which is only half filled to start with anyways. Got some update vids posted up recently if you interested.
this is a real good video I have a volcano and it's been nothing but problems but I bought the brushed version and then went brushless and had a lot of issues with the front dog bones but good video be safe take care
I got them off of eBay... If you're bending dogbones like that they're either poor quality, or your chassis geometry has severe angles you need to address.

You should have the alarm set at 3.6 so you can get it in before it goes dead? That's really what it's for, not crashing your airplanes.
With that brushless setup get ready to upgrade the chassis and suspension arms also. One good wreck and that sucker explodes!

@THE NPC have they held up for you? I was gonna go with the cvds for the front but so many people kept saying how they bend snap or pins come out.
@THE NPC couldnt agree more on that. Think it depends on which mfg you buy from as theres lots out there who make parts for these vehicles i guess.

It's holding up alright....for a "$200" RC isn't bad...not a tank by any means though.
Where did you order the dog bones at? I keep ordering them and they bend with minutes of use.
