If Joel really wants to avoid building a shrine to Etho to better hide his obsession, then I have few suggestions:
-Glow squid shrine since he spent so long getting a decorative permit for it and he already has an adorable glow squid at his shop
-Axolotl shrine for when he hopefully gets the blue variant
-Horse shrine to pay for his sins against horses
-Etho shrine

hm idk etho shrine seems pretty good, its a tradition for hermits to build shires to summon the friends they have a vaguely gay relationship with
and its a bit of a weird coincidence he immediately jumped to defending himself and saying he didnt do it - feels suspicious how defensive he was
I like how Etho almost immediately admitted to the statues. If it was Iskall he never would have admitted. And made Joel question his sanity
Thankfully Iskall is also terrible at lying, so while he wouldn't admit it, if you accuse him you could clearly tell.

You know, Joel, you could get some custom designs to be made into signs that actually look like graffiti! You'll have to talk to Grian about it, cause he's the one with the best knowledge on custom paintings (see his mending meditation room for more details), but I think it would look extremely cool!
I love the idea that the permit office is just super easy to work with on April Fool's Day specifically and no time else.

Ever since double life they have been driving me crazy with the boat boys dynamic, I'm pretty sure everyone else is going crazy as well. They should build shrines representing each other.

The mysterious giftbox was something issued by the "Mission Possible" pedestal in front of the Hermitcraft monolith. In the spirit of the challenge I implore all readers not to reveal who gave the giftbox, though it also doesn't need to be that big of a secret.

can i just say that joel's base is looking amazing so far? adding him to hermitcraft was a great idea, is like watching one of his regular survival series where he just builds to his heart's content but with the bonus of having really fun interactions with other people

i know in out heart of hearts we all said etho for the shrine, but lets be real: this is the ocean theme season. it should be ocean queen lizzie, so he has a shrine of his wife to rizz
The city centre Rotterdam was bombed in WW2. Therefore, the centre is completely modern while the outskirts contain older traditional buildings. A modern core with old buildings around is therefore perfectly possible in a dystopian build. All you need is some gruesome war lore. Otherwise, they could have bulldozed the temple to build commercial stuff (and only left the tori gate and and a bit of the garden down below for tourists).
The city I grew up in was wiped out by a tornado. The oldest part of time wasn’t touched, but the rest has been rebuilt. There are hardly any trees/landscaping, but there are very modern builds right beside buildings that are hundreds of years old. The hospital was destroyed, so there was a temporary tent hospital for a few years.
mhmmm perhaps magic mountain had an earthquake and caused those large caverns to form inside of it and to destroy the buildings on top....
and Japan was also bombed flat in WW2 so it also works with the Japanese theme
I wouldn't say it fits a dystopian world perfectly though. It fits a post-dystopian world that has had a chance to rebuild a lot better, since that modern city centre had to come from somewhere after the event that destroyed the old one
The solution is always TNT.
Seriously i am just SO OBSESSED with how Joel is expanding the mountain’s terrain, raising the ground level to look over the cyberpunk city, and using the traditional style on the bottom with the futuristic on the top. I love it!

Shrine of THE horses. Horse heads remain as offerings to bring back the great horse. (Whatever that is) May seem kinda boring, but atleast you would also have a place to store horse heads.

I’ve seen a few artists draw you as a tanuki, also known as Japanese raccoon dogs. These little creatures are mischievous shapeshifters and statues of them are used to bring wealth and fortune afaik.
I think a tanuki statue would be great for the shrine!
I was going to suggest that as there is a traditional one used to good fortune I learned of, then I recalled it has a giant sack and, well, that likely wouldn't be very CZcams friendly...even if it is traditional.

Whether it’s a recurring bit or not, I genuinely love Joel Etho interactions. Their little casual conversation at the end was nice. I also love Bdubs randomly coming over and changing the height signs lollll.

It was probably intensional but one thing i really think joel nailed on the design of the city is how narrow some of the streets are.
I went to Japan a long time ago but one thing i remember is how narrow and hard to navigate the streets are (especially on the more tradicional and urban side of the city) and i think joel really replicate that feeling really well.
Would love the shrine to be a reference to a past series such as Jeremy, Red, or Hermes

Something small but that I really appreciate is how Shbeans makes sure to shoutout the hermits he buys materials from, it's just a nice little reminder that Hermitcraft is a community, & that the scale of stuff on this server would be a lot more difficult if it weren't for things like the shopping district ^^

i second the idea that you should make a tanuki (japanese raccoon dog) statue for your shrine since people have drawn you as one and they symbolise a lot of stuff that works for you and your area!!
i adore the use of the moss and flowers for the custom trees. thats such a nice way to do them, super pretty, will be using in my own builds for sure

Joel, the command is “/trigger custom_model_data 1”. I know from the S9 world download. You have to have a specific item in your hand for it to give the permit though. (For permits, it is paper). If that does not work, change the 1 to some other positive number. It’ll work at some point.

You're a strange but weird, fun and creative person Joel. I find you quite relatable with certain humour of being weird. But you're also good and nice at heart I get that vibe.
Idk if anyone else has said this yet, but having the old parts of the city on the outside and the new parts inside actually does make sense with Japan’s history. In WWII 70% of Tokyo was burned to the ground after a series of bombings from the Americans and fires that followed afterwards. Tokyo had to build from the ground up quickly and this is why its architecture is so modern and high tech while most of the older buildings are on the outskirts. It would probably look more like Kyoto today if the bombings and fires didn’t happen.

23:13 the paintings on the wall look a bit more like the Tokyo city streets with all the advertisements on the walls, it would fit really well in the cyberpunk area of the base, maybe with custom paintings or glowing signs?
