  • All about my project to install an LTE antenna + router into my camper van so I can have internet everywhere! This video will show you how to do it in your own car or van.
    Parts:
    - Verizon Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan
    - Router: Cradlepoint IBR1100
    - Antenna: 5-in-1 MIMO by Panorama SHKG-7-27-24-58
    - 2x short wifi, 2x short cell cables: C29-SP-1SJ, C32-SP-1-5SMARV
    I got the router and UDP on ebay. The panorama antennas can be a pain to find, you may have to order through a local distributor.
    Alternatively, cheaper options are available:

    great video! I watched it as I have to put one in my vehicle for work. One technical issue - that antenna will have a "gain" which means it concentrates data away from the antenna to go longer distances. Because you have mounted it on an angle, some transmission will be directed towards the sky at the rear of the vehicle and the road at the front of the vehicle... so if the cell tower is at the front or rear of the vehicle the gain is greately reduced. If the cell antenna is at the sides then it will be okay.

    Thanks MUCH! Very informative and helpful, also appreciate the detail and build process.... just wish I had a Van like yours! Seems to be a hard to find Van, at least in the PNW, Seattle area. Cheers, thanks again, and stay safe and healthy all! :)

    I know this is an old video, but the Cradlepoint device has a power down timer setting if connected to an ignition source to avoid battery draw.

    U can set your phone to toggle between wifi and cell network pending which gets data ....should be in your phone settings ..

    Very interesting project. Have you indeed sacrificed your AM / FM in the process? Also, is there not a setting on your phone to shut off WIFI reception and thus default to your cell provider's signal? Cheers.

    • @SmartVan
      @SmartVan  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for watching! I have indeed, just because I never use AM/FM radio, since I can stream from my phone. There is an option on my phone to do that, but I have to toggle it manually, the phone will otherwise keep trying the wifi.

    • @arnoldsmith1165
      @arnoldsmith1165 Před 5 lety

      Hmmm.... If I turn off wifi on my old IPhone, it just stays off till I turn it on again. I do this periodically to avoid connecting to free (but invariably slow) networks on the road. Did you ever read my note in your discussion tab? Cheers.

    • @SmartVan
      @SmartVan  Před 5 lety

      True, once it's off it's off, but later I'll turn it back on and then I'll have to turn it off yet again. Not a huge deal, only really affects me if I veer deep into state parks. I did not see anything in my channel discussion, do you have a link?

    • @arnoldsmith1165
      @arnoldsmith1165 Před 5 lety

      You have to click "Sort by" and then "Newest first". (I don't know why)

    On iPhone you can use your lte to make your WiFi that your connected too better, it’s in the cellular settings.

    • @SmartVan
      @SmartVan  Před 5 lety +1

      I know, but a dedicated LTE antenna will have better performance (faster) and be always on. Uploading hundreds of gigs from my iphone is going to be a pain

    The prices that you listed are quite high for a casual internet user. I wonder why a simple router won't work just as well.
    And how is this different/better/worse than WeBoost?

    • @SmartVan
      @SmartVan  Před 5 lety +4

      A dedicated antenna mounted on a good ground plane (roof) can result in stronger signal (getting more bars = faster internet, or slow internet where weboost would have no reception). The gear I use here is all high end (cradlepoint is used in emergency responder vehicles and internet-connected kiosks) but there are consumer counterparts for cheaper as well.

    Since you installed the antenna on the curved part. Do you think that the antenna not being horizontal effects your signal any?

    • @SmartVan
      @SmartVan  Před 3 lety +2

      I asked an RF engineer and he didn't think it would matter much, the concern would be if the cell were directly behind the van and so the metal roof gets in the way.

    I'm not really clear.. i have unlimited data on my cell and hotspot all my gadgets. I havent experienced caps but maybe Im not using it that much? Ok, so how much a month should I look to spend monthly? I also wonder if heat or cold will affect the router during seasons as it looks too close to the roof protected by thin sheet metal?
    Hey great stuff eitherway for me to consider!

    • @SmartVan
      @SmartVan  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for watching. Depends on your cell provider, most will give you unlimited data up to a data cap like 25GB, then will throttle you to dialup speeds. Other providers may give you unlimited to some amount, then de-prioritize your network traffic. If you're really lucky you'll have a grandfathered verizon unlimited data plan, which is truly unlimited due to some legal situation back in the early days of LTE rollout, but those are pricey. Check out www.rvmobileinternet.com/ if you want to get serious about it :)
      Weather hasn't been an issue so far but this router operates from -22F to 158F: cradlepoint.com/products/cor-ibr1100-series#!specs

    Would have been a better DIY video If you either mounted that antenna a flat surface I see the racks but it really wouldn't interfere and also you have it on a Ford path so it's more directional than Omni and you should have used a gasket RTV tube and basically from the call to the Outer Perimeter should have been coded with that are TV before you screwed it in place and let the force disburse it and then quickly clean butt squeezed out and let that cure you're going to have roof leaks I guarantee overtime especially with vibration also you should have coded painted whatever you call it the bare metal on inside and outside you don't have to have it match but you don't ever want bare metal so in all of my installs that's basically how I would do a curved if I was forced to otherwise I would discuss with the person maybe a different kind of antenna
