I was lucky enough to get to watch it in cinemas. My father used to take me there to enjoy the movies together, but when I saw the trailer of this one on TV, it looked so amazing that I asked him myself to take me and watch this one. It’s the only movie I asked my father to let me watch on cinemas. I was 8.

What gets me about the first Pharoh Seti (Ramses’ dad) saying “They were only slaves” is that he says it to Moses most fatherly tone ever. Like he’s almost trying to comfort Moses as if it was just a small thunderstorm or something….

I like how they made the whole Pharaoh family not inherently evil or devious, but another victims of the circumstances. Seti wasn't a bad guy - his worldview was just so twisted and corrupted by the dogmas of the dynasty. He had his moral compass, it just didn't worked for slaves who were nothing more than a pests or tools for Seti. Just like our moral compass doesn't generally work for mosquitoes or other bugs for example: we can kill them without remorse and still be good human beings.

He fully expected some form of revolution to happen especially hearing about neighboring Canaanite revolts

I love how when Moses comes back from the desert and talks to Rameses alone, we get the same wide shot of the outside view from the throne room as we did when their father was yelling at them in the beginning, only this time Rameses has built an even taller monument next to the one their father built, symbolizing Rameses' need to outdo his father's legacy bc of the insecurity his father instilled in him.
Also Rameses' son standing between the crocodiles directly in line with the Hebrew firstborns at 24:00 foreshadows how his fate parallels theirs, and the blood Moses's staff creates in the river is their same blood since they drowned in that river

It’s so interesting seeing someone who didn’t grow up in church like I did react to this story. In the Bible, there is a phrase, “There is the power of life and death in the tongue.” And it’s so prevalent in this story. Ramses brings upon the final plague with his words. He lost his own son to his stubbornness and hubris. It’s a powerful story.
The animation is stunning. The story is definitely hauntingly beautiful, the score, perfect. They do a wonderful job of showing this story’s heart and what this story wants you to feel.
The songs all hit. Not a single miss. These songs stay being played on my playlist. Lol.
Loved your reaction and how much it got to you. This is one movie I think universally a lot of people are touched by.
Fun facts: It was said that Moses had a stutter, so Aaron had to speak for him.
Also when crossing the Red Sea. The people had to hold Moses’s arms up so all of their people could cross. It was something like millions of people who crossed that Sea so his arms would get tired.
Moses was actually nursed by his birht mother. He was found in Hebrew clothing by his adoptive mother so she sent people out to find a nursing mother to feed the child. His sister, Miriam suggested a nurse mother for him, which so happened to be his birth mom. It’s also why I figured he would know the song, because she would sing it to him when he was younger.

I remember being stunned by the symbolism in the story itself, but also how it was executed in the film. Rameses unknowingly predicting (and facilitating) his own downfall - "And there will be a great cry in all of Egypt--" , the parallels of the plagues to prominent Egyptian Dieties, the parallels and juxtapositions...it's so well done that everyone appreciates it as a masterwork of storytelling.

The day of the final plague, the Isrealites were told to go borrow their Egyptian neighbors' gold, silver, and jewels. God gave the Isrealis favor. The common Egyptians considered Moses to be a great man. This was how they plundered Egypt.

@@darquidarqui I'm glad you did! The Biblical stories aren't for everyone, the real versions or the revised-for-movie/tv versions, but they're a lot more interesting than people give them credit for. Even Christians and Jews (if talking about the Old Testament as this movie takes place in) sell the immensity short of the stories told.
If you really decide you want to read out of interest--don't worry, I'm not evangelizing at you, I believe firmly we should understand the stories of all religions regardless of our own faith or lack thereof, due to the influence religion has the globe over--make sure to get a New King James and then make use of Bible Gateway to look at what different versions say at verses you really like, because it changes from version to version.
Also don't hesitate to pick up the books the Catholic Church deemed 'non-canon', because those things are awesome and makes other things make more sense.
For example, the Book of Enoch tells that the Great Flood (with Noah and his ark) was brought about because the world was filled with the children of the Fallen Angels, and Noah WASN'T chosen because he was a good man, but he was 'pure in his generations' aka he and his family didn't have fallen angel DNA in them. It's freaking awesome stuff.
Like I said, this isn't evangelizing. I don't expect you to run to the nearest church or anything. Even though I'm Christian myself, I've studied all the different faiths, past and present, to some degree and feel everyone should so they can speak with some level of authority when they say they do/don't believe something. Religion of all kinds is intimately connected to the evolution of civilization, so it's important!

I mean, he had to make many sacrifices in order to fulfill a duty that he didn't want to personally (of course he wanted the slaves free but being the Sheperd that delivers them and serving as Rameses's foe on God's behalf...). The main sacrifice was losing his brother like twice. Also, at the beginning he didn't want to accept or see the state of the slaves. And he killed a man (in the movie at least accidentally), that isn't something very common in animated movies. Also, he didn't just accept in seconds that he was Hebrew, he was at the beginning in almost complete denial.
Regarding Rameses, I think people should empathize with him more. I mean, not justify his actions but understand where he comes from. Because I know many of us would have done the same in his place. I very much like their interaction alone after the priests' song. As an agnostic atheist having no personal spiritual connection to Christianity whatsoever, the animation in this movie combined with the beautiful soundtrack made it one of my go-to favorites as a child. Ramses, despite being the direct antagonist of the story, still remains to be my favorite - the depths this film gave to the character (To my knowledge, the bible doesn't mention anything about this brotherly love-hate relationship at all, so the movie has all the credit for depicting that) is painfully astounding, and I'm still blown away by the cast and how many name I was able to recognize by the time I was old enough to look it up. I remember thinking to myself "VOLDEMORT is RAMSES??" the first time I knew😄 (I mean they both are entitled dictators)
    8:45 And YES Jeff Goldblum voiced Aaron! L E G E N D
My favorite moment is probably right here: 19:54
Ramses' eyes clenching shut and then opening with that vicious glare in time with the music - AGSDJHJHS
Plus, I love that his line of "I will not be the weak link!" pretty much tells us all we need to know of why he's the way he is (he also didn't get a personal wakeup call like Moses did) and that he does care for Moses and still loves him, but he's afraid that'll let down his entire dynasty and his father's legacy. UGH SO GOOD NBHGD
Also - that scene with the plague silently swishing through the village and taking lives still gives me chills at the way how it was executed, and the following scene where we hear villagers wailing for their lost loved ones is haunting, I think even younger-me waited around for that scene especially, just to feel the dread creeping in. (i was a darkass child) I adore those kinds of depths in children's movies because so much of the media covering content made for kids were sugarcoated beyond necessity, I felt being constantly talked down to watching them🥲 (Probably why Avatar meant so much to me, huh) Aaaanyway - I enjoyed this reaction just as much as I anticipated while clicking on it, thank you for the treat!✨

All fair perspective. However the brotherly relationship is pure Disney magic for the storyline (like the fake love story between jack and rose in titanic). The Bible makes it clear Moses was made painfully aware of being a Hebrew at every moment - he was considered a second class citizen by Ramses and every other Egyptian in the palace. Pharaohs wife did want to rescue him from the river, she believed it was sign from the Gods to do so, but he was not allowed to do harm to an Egyptian and would have been sentenced to death if he didn’t flee. I think of him as like the lucky foreign adopted child chosen by a wealthy celebrity.

I also watched this movie this year. And I think it's perfect because as a kid I wouldn't have understood all the nuance and darkness this movie holds.
I just love the direction so much. There's great storytelling, so much visual genius. The animation is also so great for 1998. I didn't know they could go that hard back then.
Also, love how moses goes from "careful slave" to horrified at his "father" saying "they were only slaves." Within span of like 5 minutes. Making this stuff stick the landing so well is a sign of great direction. His journey later on is still constantly about change and it's so freakin well done. It kept surprising me with creative ways. I don't know if I could rank it in top 5 or top 10 but this is easily one of the best animated movie I've ever seen. It's up there somewhere.
Lastly, I do believe that you are your choices. Especially choices you make as an adult. But I still felt like ramses was result of his surroundings and I do kinda feel bad for him. All of his upbringing was him getting called the weakest link and he dreaded being that. Even after his father's death he was conditioned to think the same way without someone being there to remind him. I'm glad how they revisited it. That plus the belief of "slaves are slaves" is something that takes a lot out of you to get rid of. Indoctrination can be one of the hardest things to get rid of. Even moses didn't question his beliefs until he was told he was one of them.
11:36 This was happening all of his life but moses never questioned it until that moment. I just love how nuanced this movie is while still being visually and musically beautiful.

@@darquidarqui Have you watched Violet Evergarden? It is a manga/anime story. The series follows an order: first it comes the series, which consists of 1 season of 13 eps. + ep 14 which is an special. Secondly, two movies, the first one of them called Violet Evergarden Gaiden and the second one Violet Evergarden: The Movie (the last one has HUGE spoilers). I seriously recommend you this show and if you want to and can, it would be a pleasure if it you shared your reaction and/or review with us someday. I suggest you follow the order I explained to avoid spoilers and feeling disoriented.
So, what can I say about Violet Evergarden? You will start practicing again your tearbending. Seriously. The first two episodes are not like Attack on Titan when whe see Eren's mother get eaten in ep 1, but they are necessary to get settled in the story and know some basics. The majority of the rest of them will consist of Violet (the protagonist) and a different coprotagonist per episode, with different personal story yet all of them emotional (above all a couple or three episodes...). It also talks about writing and the meaning of words (I loved that a lot).
Also, amazing ost and background songs and song. They surely make you feel the atmosphere around certain place or character.
The animation . . . O M G. Like... O M G. . . Speechless. I thought Attack on Titan's animation was getting very good as seasons went by but DAMN, Violet Evergarden hits REALLY hard in that. I think it was what most impressed me about the anime. Above all some specific shots (like one specific shot of ep 7). And I also have to mention the animation of the eyes of the characters. So detailed. The colour of the eyes of Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Gilbert from Violet Evergarden have made me fall in love with the emerald eyes.

Here is the VO cast list. It is an amazingly stellar group including many oscar, tony and grammy award recipients. Val Kilmer as Moses, a Hebrew who was adopted by Pharaoh Seti and Queen Tuya
Kilmer also provides the uncredited voice of God
Amick Byram provides Moses's singing voice
Ralph Fiennes as Rameses, Moses's adoptive brother and eventual successor to Seti
Michelle Pfeiffer as Tzipporah, Jethro's oldest daughter and Moses's wife
Sandra Bullock as Miriam, Aaron's sister and Moses's biological sister
Sally Dworsky provides Miriam's singing voice
Eden Riegel provides the voice of a younger Miriam
Jeff Goldblum as Aaron, Miriam's brother and Moses's biological brother
Danny Glover as Jethro, Tzipporah's father and Midian's high priest
Brian Stokes Mitchell provides Jethro's singing voice

Helen Mirren as Queen Tuya, Seti's wife, Rameses's mother, and Moses's adoptive mother
Linda Dee Shayne provides Tuya's singing voice
Steve Martin as Hotep, one of the high priests who serves as an advisor to Seti, and later Rameses. He is short and fat.
Martin Short as Huy, Hotep's fellow high priest. He is tall and thin.
Ofra Haza as Yocheved, Miriam and Aaron's mother and Moses's biological mother. She sang her character's number, "Deliver Us", in English and 17 other languages for the film's dubbing.[9]
    Bobby Motown as Rameses's son
    Anne Lockhart as Hebrew Woman
James Avery, Aria Noelle Curzon, Stephanie Sawyer and Francesca Marie Smith as additional voices
Director Brenda Chapman briefly voices Miriam when she sings the lullaby to Moses. The vocals had been recorded for a scratch audio track, which was intended to be replaced later by Sally Dworsky. The track turned out so well that it remained in the film.[10]

Fun Fact: The voice of God, to avoid controversy, was played by all of the major actors. The actors were told to whisper the lines, so none would dominate the performance, but by the time they got around to having Val Kilmer read his lines, they realized they needed someone to be louder. You still can hear the rest of the cast whispering beneath Kilmer's voice in God's lines.
Bonus Fact: The production team and executive producer Jeffrey Katzenberg conferred with roughly 600 religious experts to make this movie as accurate and faithful to the original story as possible. After previewing the developing movie, all of the religious scholars, experts, and leaders associated in the making of this movie noted that the studio executives listened and responded to their ideas, and praised the studio for reaching out for comment from outside sources.

@@Powerranger-le4up It's been found that once christians bias is removed for their blind devotion towards their religion regardless of whether it's moral or not since they were usually indoctrinated from a young age to believe that if they questioned their religion at all they're gonna burn for all eternity in hell (which is one of the most disgusting parts about the religion) which scares them away from ever questioning anything, that even christians don't find The Bible moral.
They did this study where they showed Christians and Jewish people Bible passages but pretended the passages were actually from a Chinese religion that was different from Christianity. It was found that when christians thought that their own Bible passages were from a different religion they started being a lot more critical of what was said and found things within The Bible to be immoral and outright savage at points. All it took for christians to stop accepting their Bible's passages was to simply not believe it was from their religion.
There's things in that book regardless of interpretation that's just wicked. There are literally passages about how you need to sell a rape victim to her rapist, and if she doesn't scream loudly enough while being raped she's to be stoned to death. There are other passages about how to sell your daughter into sexual slavery and what price you can get for her. There's passages where God commands his people to dash babies against rocks and mass genocide entire areas of life including the animals. There's other passages where God commands them to murder everyone except for the young virgin daughters to be taken as sex slaves, which BTW, the bible never at any point condemns adults having sex with children, but condemns mixing fabric so looks like God is also pro‐MAPS and God himself impregnated a 14 year old. I feel like most people in modern times would find p.3d0.philia bad. Moses himself shortly after where the movie ends murders a whole ton of his own people for worshipping a golden calf including children who wouldn't know better. God later punishes Moses's son for accidentally seeing moses naked while moses was in a drunken stupor by turning him into a slave. God also tries to murder Moses for little to no reason but decides not to murder him because his wife cut off his son's foreskin and threw it at Moses's feet which made God pleased.
These are things that happen in The Bible, regardless of how you interpret those actions. Do you find these things moral? If you do it shows how religion can twist people into believing things they would never accepted in any other context as being good.

@@juegosofgaming1215 It's funny you should say one of the least impressive things you could possibly say. Christians have been using the ultra vague could nearly account for pretty much anything at any time period prophecies to say that Jesus has been coming every single year now for thousands of years without him showing up, even though according to Jesus's own accounts and own word that pretty much everybody likes to completely ignore because it's inconvenient was that some of his followers who initially saw him would still be alive when he returned. Literally if you look at historical records every single generation since Jesus died thought that they were the generation to see the end times, cause every single generation since the beginning of time have had things like war and famine, which is why prophecies love to use super vague stuff like that.
Let me predict some super great prophecies too so that people can fit what I say into anything they want in the future.
      -War will happen.
-Some people will eat food and drink water in those times.
-Politicians will behave in a corrupt manner.
      - Somewhere somebody will let out a mighty fart.
      - People will disagree with other people's opinions in those times which is great because those people will already have a victim complex despite having most of the power, and will say things like them not being allowed to suppress the rights of others is suppressing their freedoms, and use that to confirm the prophecy.
-Famine and illness will exist in those times.
-Ducks will swim upon the water.
-Those in power will suppress those in minority groups.
      - Vague symbolic stuff involving dragons and what not that people can interpret however they want.
That's about the level that the prophecies of revelations are on, which why literally every time period in human history afterwards people have always thought it was the return of Jesus. Look it up. There's been pretty much no time in history that people didn't think that the prophecies were coming true. Yet people like you are actually impressed.
I bet you would be impressed if I made a prophecy that said that you're going to go to bed in the future and sleep then awaken again. It's funny how gullible you are.
If they wanted to actually be impressive they would have said something specific. Like, " a person named Joe Biden will become the president of a place that doesn't exist yet called the United States in this exact year at this exact time, And here's all of the exact events that I'll lead up to it including the insurrection, et cetera. It's funny how your prophecies can only be said in super vague could be interpreted as anything speak, from a supposed God who knows everything that's gonna happen in the future and so could very easily say very specific things. Hell like what if Jesus predicted that virus has existed long before anybody discovered them, And taught people about disease prevention like washing your hands with soap and water. Instead he curses a fig tree for not bearing fruit when it was in the off time of the year.

my favorite korra reactor reacting to my favorite animated movie 😍

  • @asoiafan
    @asoiafan Před 2 lety +6

Amazing reaction!!! I knew you'd like it and appreciate its quality!!
By the way, amongst all the symbolism, have you noticed how many of them are of Rameses and his father, the Pharaoh? For example, when Moses talks to him (after the reunion), you can see at some point Rameses's profile face, and beside him the his father's statue's profile face. Also, when Rameses says "And I think it's time I finish the job", pointing out his index finger. The light of the torch is strong enough to let us see his father in a hieroglyph doing the same. Overall, you can see symbolism in the Pharaoh father. When he talks to Moses about how Rameses will inherit the crown, and approaches his youngest son, there's again his statue figure with a profile face. Also, have you noticed there that Moses doesn't climb all the stairs so you can see Pharaoh in a literally higher position compared to him?
Now, the scene where his father tells Moses "Sometimes, for the greater good, sacrifices must be made". I think the father really believed what he said. It kind of reminds me the quote that people usually relate to Machiavelli (if you don't know about him, he's considered the father of modern politics, kind of, and it's worth reading his works such as The Prince, in my opinion, even though I don't share mant of his ideas), but in reality it isn't his quote. I think maybe Napoleon Bonaparte said that? Anyway, the famous quote is "The end justifies the means". This quote also reminds me that there is a similarity between Pharaoh and God. God let Hebrew babies be drowned, he killed the Firstborns, he brought the other Plagues to people that didn't believe in him but that were innocent etc. Of course Rameses should have agreed, he's stubborn and only wants to please his father, surpass him, and increase his own ego (something that I understand, although that doesn't justify him). But I personally believe God has also something to say in all those deeds that, for me, are also cruel.
    Animation: AMAAAZZZIIIING.
Finally, speaking about music... The intro Deliver Us is impactful and powerful; All I've Ever Wanted is realistic (his whole life has been a lie and he doesn't want to accept that); Through Heaven's eyes is catchy and is my favourite song of the movie; Playing with the Big Boys is creepy, The Plagues is powerful, impactful, and it hurts; When You believe has a good progressive structure that leads then characters from depression, sadness, fear, to hope (and, of course, children feel free) and has a beautiful clymax. Regarding the ost, also INCREDIBLE. It feels majestic, almighty, mysterious mixed with a divine aura (the ost when Moses and God talk, explains his wife what he's seen, when, once opened the seas, beustiful and big sea creatured aporar, is the same, so I believe that ost is the one referred to God and all the magical things he can do). The final ost, when they're finally free and then in Mount Sinai... And making the movie have a circular structure with the same ending as the ending of the song Deliver us... EARGASM. So grand, so epic...
Also, SO SAD. "And even now, I wish that God had chosen another. Serving as your foe on his behalf is the last thing that I wanted". "Goodbye, brother" (TWICE).
Regarding characters, I like the part when Moses answers Aaron saying "I didn't see because I did not wish to see". Also, it's quite unusual to see a main character killing (even accidentally) someone else (despite that someone doing cruel things). This adds realism to a main character, who doesn't have to be perfect. And how he cries when he sees all the suffering. And Rameses, how deceived he felt when he discovered that the brother he thought had died came back but not for the reasons he expected, and Moses giving him the ring back, and Rameses remembering his brother helping him get out of the trouble that Moses himself had caused... And the guards leaving with the Hebrews... This shows, in my opinion, the gray colour of the characters.
I also loved that they portrayed the meaning of true sacrifice. This movie is sad because, to fulfill a mission of God that Moses didn't want to personally, he had to go against his brother, and he became his foe. In the end, he had to bid farewell to Rameses again, with such sadness, knowing that this time, and seeing how things are between them, he will not see him never again. Moses has finally accepted his destiny, but at what cost?

As a Christian, this has to be among the best Christian movies ever made.
Even if you’re not Christian, you can still appreciate the animation, the story, the characters, the imagery, even the message.
A prideful leader closes his heart to his people, and a godly leader works only for the good of his people.
I personally like how all of Ramses’ pride stemmed from his insecurity about one thing that his father said to him years ago. “I will not be the weak link”, but if he had just opened his heart, he could have avoided so much suffering. He could have even saved his son, if he had just let go of his pride.
And that’s why pride is often regarded as the “leader” of the 7 deadly sins. Because pride is the most difficult to overcome. Pride is a killer.

One of the many things reactors tend to miss (not just you so don't worry about it lol) is the "playing with the big boys now" sequence and how they designed it, as well as every instance thereafter where the priests are told to replicate Moses' 'wonders'. Most of Moses' miracles are done with very little fanfare and extra effect they sort of just... happen. The priests on the other hand use sleight of hand, distraction and a ton of other Magician-type tricks to make their case. They're putting on a show, in other words.
I believe this is done partially to differentiate the two but also to show, as Moses puts it: "Behold, the Power of God." God's Miracles, through Moses, take form right in front of everyone's eyes. There's nothing to distract, conceal, or in any way trick your senses into believing it; the priests on the other hand use all of the above (such as preloading his and with a bunch of powder to replicate the 'water-to-blood' miracle for example) to accomplish their tasks.
I dunno it's something I've always noticed and I've yet to see a reactor point it out so I thought I'd share.
    Edit:
The tenth plague, to put it bluntly, was a 'return-to-sender' of sorts. After the massacre Ramses' father ordered, Ramses was going to order another one to be committed in return for the Plagues he perceived Moses causing, but God had anticipated that and the Tenth plague took the firstborn from all unmarked houses (the blood on the doors), and unlike the Egyptians massacre, God actually kinda one upped them and didn't discriminate by 'newborn' or not: just firstborn.

This movie is so amazing, and I grew up with this film. There is actually a stage adoption of this film that played in the West End. And when the Covid struck two years ago, fans got the chance to submit a video of them singing when you believe to make a special lock in video. I was one of the blessed people who got to be in the video. The video as well as the musical soundtrack can be found on CZcams. If you enjoyed the prince of Egypt, I highly recommend you check out it’s pretty cool Joseph: King of Dreams. It’s just as amazing and have awesome songs as well. Also I would recommend that you check out The Ten Commandments (1965) which is a great film as well and very detailed. 🧡💙

Fun fact (or not so fun if you're Pharoah), the line that Rameses says at 23:41 about a "great cry in all of Egypt" is actually what God says unto Moses before bringing down the final plague; the death of the firstborn.

I saw two Franciscans react to this movie and they did a good job with the spiritual aspects, but the also the reason why God allowed those plagues. He gave Rameses every opportunity to let them go, but Rameses constantly refused. As a Catholic, I know that while God is very patient and loving, he won’t wait forever. Eventually, he will take action to protect his people.
The First Plague was actually a warning to Rameses because the Nile is Egypt’s primary source of life. God was basically saying, “If I can turn off Egypt’s primary life source, I think it would be a good idea to obey because worse things will happen if you don’t.
