  • How to initialize or reprogram the sunroof motor own 2012-13-14 explorers. May work for other years as well
Note: Not for the sunshade as well. I do say "sunroof and sunshade" at the beginning, but that was a misspeak because I do so many for F-150's, for which the one procedure does both. This one is sunroof motor only.
Here is the video of how to reset/program the shade. I said in this video I was going to do both, then I watched it and realized I forgot to do the shade, so I did one just for that:
    • 2014 Explorer Sunshade...
    Here is the procedure:
NOTE: The driver or passenger front door must be open during the entire procedure.Open the driver or passenger front door.2. Turn the ignition to the ON position.3. Complete the following within 5 seconds: - Cycle the ignition to the OFF position and then back to the ON position.- Push the TILT switch for less than one second and release.- Push and hold the TILT switch until full glass open and closed is witnessed (this could take up to 20 seconds to start).4. Release the switch and verify successful initialization by carrying out one-touch open, one-touch close and one-touch vent operations.

I would stop using it. Likely your drains are restricted and getting water into the motor. That kills the motor...sometimes it'll work intermittently, but eventually it dies completely...usually when it's open.

@@kevinrapp8003 That's weird. I'd lean towards a bad switch, unless you somehow got a bad motor.
There's nothing else in the circuit. The "smart" part of the circuit is inside the motor, so the switch just activates each function.
I'd almost lean towards that new motor being bad.
Have you programmed it more than once? Sometimes they take a few times to "accept" all the inputs.
If so, then the only way you can prove the switch is bad is to find a wiring diagram and test it manually.
Otherwise, it has to be the motor.
BTW, if you had a bad motor, a water leak from the sunroof drains being clogged is usually what kills them, so you best get them clears while you're at it.

Not really. You can remove the glass. It's 4 Torx #25 screws, 2 on each side. Pull off the accordion looking things and the screws are behind it. It'll be harder to get to the drains that way because the deflector is in the way (since the sunroof mechanism is closed) but you can use a weedeater cord and stick it down in there and that might unclog it.
Sunroof drains stopping up and killing the motor is pretty common.
Make sure they only replace the one motor...if the shade still works, you don't need it and there's nothing that says you have to replace them in pairs, either.

Im only commenting because I had the same issue.
The problem: I bought an aftermarket motor. I swapped the aftermarket motor with the oem sun screen motor (that way I didn’t have to return the aftermarket motor and wait on a replacement) initializing worked after that.
My exact issue, the sunroof would slide automatically if I pressed tilt, but it wouldn’t slide back if I pulled tilt. The tilt function however did not work at all.
If I used slide, it wouldn’t automatically slide, and if I held it long enough it would go into tilt position (sometimes).

Fixed the fuse, sunroof works but no auto-close. Searching and going to the dealer to find out it never did have one from the factory. BUT the fuse location for the sunroof was a fuse tap to a long wire which I traced going to the plugs on the rear of the sunroof. There are two identical motors, but one runs the shade. The one over the driver's side is the motor for the glass.
I fixed the sunroof leak by clearing the front sunroof drains. You can get a small tube that'll go in the drain holes and blow them out like you're using a straw. Do NOT use compressed air.
I remove part of the inner fenders and clip off the restrictor inside the wheel well so it won't happen again, but that's a bit more difficult.

It's hard for me to say what a beginner can do. Some folks are just a bit more "handy" than others and new things like this will be easier for them and harder for others.
And it takes me literally 5 minutes to replace the motor on one of these, but I've done hundreds and this is what I do, so my experience really isn't applicable.
I would say this: If you're familiar with using tools, you can probably replace the motor.
However, you also need to fix the water leak or it's just going to kill the new motor as well.
The leak is coming from the front sunroof drains.
There are videos on here that show how to do both. They aren't exactly how I do them, but they can get you there.
I've tried to make a video on the motor a couple of times, but since I just use a cell phone it's never turned out well. I need someone to hold the phone for me while I work, just haven't had that yet.
I would say look at a couple of the videos on how to do the motor that I've seen floating around, and determine if you think it's within your capabilities.

Could be the motors, but doubtful. They are glitchy sometimes. I had one today with the sunroof stuck mostly open. Needed a motor, customer didn't want to fix it, just wanted it shut and disabled.
Removed the glass motor. Pushed the glass as far as it would go...but that isn't far enough to get to the back screws that hold it in. If I could get the glass out, I could just manually put the track in "closed" position, reinstall the glass and I'm done.
But I can't get the glass out.
So I swapped the shade motor to the sunroof side, as the shade worked fine and it's the exact same motor.
I had to program it as a sunroof motor, and it shut fine.
Put it back to the shade side, and it didn't want to work. Finally did the shade programming, but started in the middle of the procedure just as a guess, and it worked.
So try starting at different points in the procedure and see if that works. Unplugging the motor for a few minutes might work, too.

So it works normally but is just slightly out of adjustment? If so, there are 3 Torx 25 screws that hold the glass in. There's a good bit of adjustment you can do by loosening those and moving the glass manually.

If your roof won't move at all, this procedure won't work. This procedure assumes that the motor will function and just needs to be programmed.
If your motor is inoperative, it's likely bad. Water leaks are common from stopped up sunroof drains, and the water that spills out of the trough gets into the motor and kills it. So likely you need a new sunroof motor, THEN you can do this procedure.
But be sure to clear the sunroof drains as well, or it'll kill the new motor, too.

    • @SealofPerfection
      @SealofPerfection  Před 3 lety

I need to do a video on that. What I do is: Remove the Torx #20 screws from the driver side visor, visor anchor and passenger visor anchor.
Bend the headliner down in the middle (you won't hurt it) and pull the headliner away from the driver side A pillar so you can get your hand up in there. You can remove the A pillar if you like.
Remove the 3 Torx 20 screws that hold the motor in..it's right above where the driver visor is. Unplug the motor. Install the new motor. It comes with 3 new screws. Don't need them, but use them if it makes you feel better.
Reinstall all the visor and visor anchor screws.
Then program it like in the video.
And most importantly: Unclog your sunroof drains, because water is what killed the motor in the first place.

No wonder the motor got fried if you have to turn the vehicle on and off several times to open or close the sunroof! That is ludicrous! We have a 2016 and have never opened it. We are having a lot of trouble with water flooding the front passenger floorboard after a heavy rain. We have taken it back several times to get it “fixed” to no avail. I love it otherwise but will probably sell it and downsize to a CRV or Subaru.

    • @SealofPerfection
      @SealofPerfection  Před 2 lety

The water leak is what kills the motor. Turning the car on and off doesn't affect it at all.
Sunroof drains being stopped up lets water spill over into the motor, and eventually they short out.
