After watching Sunday's final and after seeing Shane Walsh scoring 9 points I remembered the 2-09 that this great man scored in 1980 on the losing side vs Kerry in the All Ireland semi final. Would've loved to have seen this man play.
I seen him play a lot for his club Walsh Island who were top dogs in Offaly in the late 70`s - early 80`s. He was the nemesis of my club Ferbane and he won games on his his own. I remember Walsh Island v Ferbane in O` Conner Park and there was a sideline ball for Walsh Island. The kick was a good distance from goal and to the right of the posts. Matt stepped up and with the outside of his right foolt put the ball over the bar with ease. I was privileged to be just yards away. A genius for sure!
Great player you can call Matt the complete player. He could kick left & right with no weakness, his body swerves when selling the dummy was top drawer. Great sportsman as well. We will not see his likes in Offaly again.
As time goes on each generation has their star footballers and hurlers but I suppose as Matt came from what is classified as one of the so-called weaker counties his prowess on the pitch might not as legendary as some but men like himself, Greg Blaney , Paddy Quirke etc were exceptional players.
Is , and will always be my favourite footballer of all time ,,,
Fantastic player. When I was a young fella he was the favourite.
Watching GAA since mid 70's and no forward player can touch Matt Connor,am glad I saw him in him in his prime,a genius wit the ball.
Waited years for this to make a comeback. Taped it on VHS when it first came on TG4 and loved him ever since. Go on Matt Connor!
The best of the best, an all time great.

A genius. There is no other word to describe Matt.
7:56 9:10 12:03 16:37 that sort of skill in the late 70s early 80s pure class
The best I have ever seen, he played some amazing club football with Walshisland.

he was the GAA version of Ronaldo
Mikey Sheehy was a lovely silky smooth player that i admired as a young boy .... but Matt Connor took it tp a different level.
Greatest forward of all time. End of the story.
